Windwalker’s Chipping Journey in Pr0n0grAph1C Detail (22 Viewers)

Your formative years comic book hero was Archie?

I had a ton of batman and Superman when I was a kid. There was a second hand store that let you trade two comics for one. We were buying 70’s era comics and trading for 50’s and 60’s, just kids reading up on our heroes. My younger brother (8 years) preferred Ritchie rich. So while I was gone to college my mom traded all my 50’s and 60’s batman and Superman comics for a Ritchie rich collection for my brother. I still have them worthless fuckers somewhere.
Omg hahah that’s both funny and heartbreaking.

I have a decent bunch of TRKs, including a VERY large set of chips sitting in probate court-related escrow from an estate sale. Covid severely delayed the release of those, but the courts are finally moving again, so fingers crossed. Until then this my largest TRK set in hand:

Absolutely breathtaking.
The NC $25 in particular is in my top 5 of any chip ever produced. Can't wait to hear back after you get TRKs in play!

I’m wondering which TRK Lcrown sets you may have?
I don’t collect Lcrowns because most of them are not leaded, and in highly used condition. Plus, TRK never actually made Lcrowns, they just sold them; they were mostly manufactured by Burt & Co.

I focus on the scrowns mostly.

Your largest, but probably the “finest” TRK set in existence hands down, IMO. Those photos are my “rainbows and butterflies” when it comes to chipping.
Many here have put together some fine fine TRK sets. I don’t think one can imagine the blood sweat and tears that goes into just attempting to get “playable” when it comes to TRKs.
Lots to be proud of Krish and certainly credit where it’s due.

Good to know! I challenge you to find an old lcrown set? Or have you already written that off completely...

Thanks, Matt. This is the set that goes into play next game, so there should be some live game Pr0n forthcoming, if @WhiteMamba1646 and @wonderpuddle have their way.

I got into comic books growing up in India, where the predominant title was Archie.
Huh. That's interesting, I never knew that.

I had a lot of Archie exposure when I was growing up as well. I grew up overseas, but I don't think that had much to do with it. I always seemed to have a pretty good mix of comics available.

On a different topic: any thoughts about, once your editing work is done, giving your large sets more opportunity to see felt and breathe fresh air? Your living room wouldn't look right with more than one table, but perhaps there's a venue where you could host a large tournament and put your large tournament sets into play?

How confident are you of that? @Jeff in Iowa is of the opinion that TRK large crowns were initially made by USPCC, then later made by TRK, and probably not made by Burt. See this thread where we discussed it somewhat.

I'm glad to hear this, as I hope to get a large crowns set someday and don't need the competition. :)

lcrowns suck
boo, hiss
nobody should buy them

I don’t have any definitive proof on this, but AFAIK, TRK only marketed lcrowns, they didn’t make them. This is supported by the fact that they’re not leaded, and it makes no sense that they’d have a different process for unleaded chips, it would have required a pretty big change to their manufacturing process.

USPCC did made some of the initial ones, as I recall. I do have a Burt & Co order form somewhere for some Lcrowns, so I do know they made them.

Some random TRK rack Pr0n as I was sorting through the mail and cabinets.

Congrats on entering the editing phase and only after 8.5 months. I look at some of the pics and you do have some nice sets. I'll be honest I had to keep looking at my sanctuary because I was afraid they were going to get up and fly over to you for a better home. LOL Now that you are in the editing phase I know my spotted birds are safe!

SSSHHHHHHH. Or he'll edit one of his sets to include your spotted birds!

I've been trying to figure out the chronology of Large Crown chip manufacture, and this it what I've been able to dig up so far.

I think that TRK began making their own Large Crown chips sometime between 1940 and 1947. In their catalog roughly dated to the 1940s, they introduce a new line of "Mercury Speed" Large Crown chips that all have new different colors and are 50% heavier than their older Large Crown chips. Presumably they are 50% heavier because a lot of lead (or some other metal) is being added to them. (see image below)

The first new extra heavy Lcrown colors are Grey, Orange, Green, Crimson, and Blue. In the same catalog they offer their older "standard weight" "King's Registered Crown Chips", offered in Red, Blue, Orange, Chocolate, Light Green, Lavender, Light Blue, Pink and Black.

I suppose that it is possible that the Burt Co. was making the new chips in new colors, but I had assumed that TRK was making the chips themselves. Burt purchased the USPC Co. equipment (and likely their clay chip/dye formulas) around 1947. Presumably TRK would have had to create new chip/dye formulas, which would explain why they have different colors.

If you have a Burt order form for Large Crown chips, I would love to see it, as that would completely change my thinking about these chips.

Once the editing is done, I assume you’ll move on to a new collecting passion: rubber ducks!

Seriously, your collection is a wonder! Thanks for sharing it with us.

Jeff, one possibility is that the "standard weight" large crowns were made by USPCC using their Paranoid material and the "new Heavy Weight" chips were made by Burt using their clay formulas.

On the other hand, I have a modest collection of large crowns (mostly sourced from a single collector) and every one of them is comparable to a Burt clay chip, not a one of them is at all similar to the Paranoid engraved chips I have (as seen in my avatar photo) which are indeed substantially lighter than the clays.

Editing phase is nice... but I'm still waiting on production phase.. where WW develops a manufacturing technique for new chips that matches Paulson in quality, feel, look and cost. Then accepts old school THC chips as payment from members for the custom sets he produces on his new mold. Come to think of it, this should have been phase 1 ;)

100%. unfortunately the real thing doesn’t look like it will ever be an option
Hard to believe just a few years ago a rack of fives was only $200 from Spinittis. I remember getting upset when they raise the price to $300 a rack when HQ started wiping them out for his set LOL

I remember when you could send Spinettis a penny and they would ship you bursting boxes of TRKs..
