WSOP Chip Usage History - 2007 Rio Primary Paulson set

Primary and Secondary Usage

It is a misnomer that these primary chips are the ‘NLHE chips’. The WSOP determines which set to use based on field sizes and what other tournaments around the same time are using. Because the NLHE events are typically the largest fields the primary set is used in most of them. A few recent examples are:

2018 1.5k HORSE event 15 used the primary set
2018 10K NLHE Super Turbo Bounty event 59 used the secondary set
2017 1k PLO event 25 used the primary Set
2017 5k NLHE 6-handed event 36 used the secondary set

The chips used at the WSOP are also not exclusively split up between the primary and secondary sets. On occasion they will use a mix of the two without any real explanation. Some examples are:

in the 2019 100k High Roller a random combination of primary and secondary set chips were used.
In the 2018 One For One Drop the primary 1K Canary Yellow was used with the secondary set
In the 2016 3k NLHE the secondary 100k White chips were used with the primary set
In the 2014 1k PLO the secondary 25K Indian Blue were used with the primary set
In the 2014 the 1.5k NLHE Millionaire Maker and 1K NLHE Seniors the secondary 100k White chips were used with the primary Set
In the 2011 the 25k NLHE Heads-Up Championship used both the primary and secondary sets
In the 2009 and 2011 5k NLHE Triple Chance event the secondary 5 Royal Red chips were used as rebuy chips
In the 2008 and 2009 the 10k NLHE Heads-Up Championship used both the primary and secondary sets
In the 2009 2k Limit HE and the 1.5k PLO8 the secondary 5 Royal Red were used for antes
In the 2018 25k PLO The oversized primary 500k Mexican Rose were used with the secondary set
In the 2007 50k HORSE Championship the primary 100, 500, and 1k chips were used with the secondary 5k and 25k quarterpie chips

Hello all,

I have decided to start a massive project to document the history and usage of every WSOP chip used by the Rio since 2007 - Present when the new chips were introduced

As of right now the information I have is very bare bones and this project is probably impossible for any individual to take on. I'm posting this earlier than I wanted to in the hopes that some experts out there can help me with the info I don't know while I continue research on other things.

What I need help from the community with:

-Identify official chip colors and edgespot names and colors named by the manufacturers. Colors may not be 100% accurate or completely missing from the above. I did the data mining for the WSOP but am not an expert on Paulson chips like some of you are.
-Suggest any extra information that should be included below
-Pictures pictures pictures. This is where I need the biggest help. I do not have the time to track down quality pictures of every single chip and I know some of you out there are taking screenshots and finding them on twitter. Even if there is a picture already if you have a better quality one please post it.

Disclaimers:

Note that my first known use and tournament usage information is based on the photo sections of the WSOP and Pokernews websites. There may be examples of chips being used earlier than what I have listed but should never be later unless I really screwed up. The data above may not be complete but at this time I believe what I do have is completely accurate.

I do not own any of the above images. Also note that many images are borrowed or borrowed and cropped for the sake of this project from the Chiptalk post made by Jojong in 2015. I also used images posted by Tommy in a post called WSOP Chip Colors and from chipguide.com. Although I screenshotted or cropped images from various sources like WSOP.com image galleries, Pokernews.com image galleries, and images posted here on Pokerchipforums. If I need to credit these photos properly I will do so if deemed necessary by the community. I am not putting my name on this project and not taking credit for anything other than being the original poster. Although I have put a lot of work into this post I do not want to take credit from other people who have done the research before me that I am using.

At this time I will not be posting my data because it is slightly imcomplete. I chose to be a little vauger than I wanted to be in the above post because the data available wasn't as fruitful as I hoped in 2007 and 2008. If the WSOP or Pokernews didn't take early or late stage pictures of tournament stacks I may have missed a few chips that were used in some events.

Edgespots - 4W Style 26
Edgespot Colors – Charcoal and Metallic Silver
I don't know what the correct edge spot colours are for the T250K chip but they are definitely not charcoal and metallic silver.

Copy/paste issue on my part at some point. Those are the edgespots for the Hawaii Flower 100ks. I have updated the post to show with the edgespot colors of Bronze/Butterscotch which I believe is correct. Thanks for the heads up.

That looks to be a cut/paste typo -- the T100,000 chips have those spot colors.

What I need help from the community with:
-Identify official chip colors and edgespot names and colors named by the manufacturers.
You can usually -- not always -- find colors on the approval request that Rio submits to the Nevada gaming board prior to having the chips made. Below is the May 2018 report:
https://gaming.nv.gov/modules/showdocument.aspx?documentid=7854

And here is an enhanced copy of the original submission for the 2007 primary chips:

WSOP Primary Set - used for Main Event and most hold'em events
(all are RHC mold with Paulson 26 spots unless otherwise noted)
25 - DAY GREEN with FOREST GREEN/YELLOW
100 - BLACK with DAY BLUE/DARK BLUE
500 - DESERT FLOWER with MAROON/PINK
1000 - CANARY YELLOW with PLUM/SHERBET ORANGE
5000 - BLAZE ORANGE with DARK BROWN/TAN
25,000 - FOREST GREEN with BLUE/YELLOW
50,000 - HOT PINK with LIME GREEN/DARK GREEN - chip no longer in service
100,000 - HAWAII FLOWER with CHARCOAL/METALLIC SILVER
250,000 - ALMOND with BRONZE/BUTTERSCOTCH
500,000 - RED with DAY BLUE/WHITE - 50mm crest & seal (no-mold) with Paulson 20 (8V) spots

Note that the spot color - BLUE - listed for the T25000 chip is not a Paulson color name. I suspect it is actually either Dolphin Blue, Bahama Blue, or Light Blue, with either Yellow or Canary Yellow (and even possibly appears Arc Yellow in some photos). Problem is that photos are difficult to definitively color-match, and I certainly don't have any spare WSOP T25Ks laying around for comparison. Same on the 500,000 chip -- RED is not a Paulson color name, either.. I suspect it is actually Royal Red. doh

Do you plan on cataloging the secondary set and the 2018 set, too? Much harder project, imo.

I no longer have a color sample set, but it's not in the Paulson color reference posted here on PCF (which I thought included all 89 colors).

Seriously, you pulled that off the Resource? I've looked at that damn thing five times in the past two days looking for a Red chip. :bag:

Great post.

Also, it’d be interested to post the different breakdown that were used.

For instance, 8/8/2/8/8 for NLHE (T50K in ME 2018) or 12/12/3/12/3 (for H.O.R.S.E T30K).

I used the Nevada gaming chip report to grab most of the colors I have above, hence the issue with blue. I looked at the resource of Paulson colors as well but like you said color matching is difficult from pictures. I have no real clue what the Purple 100k chip's color is for example.

I am willing to do this for the Secondary set as well if the interest is there. I have the raw data but will need to figure out colors/edgespots for everything. Also because of forum restrictions it will be more difficult. There are more chips, more information, and I wouldn't be able to post individual pictures of every chip. I can certainly figure out the logistics, but as I said I can't figure out chip/edgespot colors.

I made a few small updates tonight. I added a pictures of the 25k Final Table RFID chips, updated some 2007 information on the lower denom chips, and added a small preamble. If my numbers are correct the number of times each chip has been used is:

25 Day Green - 400
100 Black - 403
500 Desert Flower - 403
1k Canary Yellow - 406
5k Blaze Orange - 404
25k Peach - 28
25k Forest Green - 246
25k Pastel Green - 119
50K Hot Pink - 4
100k Hawaii Flower - 21
100k unknown Purple - 66
250k Almond - 10
500k Red - 9
500k Mexican Rose - 4
1M Canary Yellow - 3
2018 RFID Final Table chips - 1

I'm not 100% confident is some of those numbers but they should be extremely close if not correct.

I have started work on the secondary chips tonight. I will probably spend the weekend staring at pictures of chips trying to see if I can come up with colors for the primary and secondary sets. If anyone with good eyes wants to take a look as well and give me color ideas I would appreciate that as well.

2007 secondary set, all 39mm RHC mold with 818 (Paulson 19) edge spots:
5 - royal red (bahama blue, mustard)
25 - lime green (orchid, grape)
100 - grey (russett, sea green)
500 - blurple (apricot, aqua)
1000 - arc yellow (moss green, red)
5000 - fuschia (off white, radiant red)
25000 - indian blue (carrot, mint green)
100000 - hawaii flower (spot colors not specified)

Updates:

-Added note that this guide applies to bracelet events only
-Added information I had for somewhat mysterious solid red probably T5 chips. I think they are either Red or Royal Red. Another pic of just the sides below:

265370

-Updated color and edgespot colors of 100k Purple found in the Nevada gaming chip and token report

April update:

-Nothing new on the Nevada Gaming chip and token report. Maybe something next month like a 5M chip to get us all excited
-Changed to a group pic for the lower denom grouped chips
-Found a high res 25k pastel green pic
-Took a chance on some colors on the higher denom chips to make the post color complete. If anyone disagrees with any colors I have listed I'm listening.

New chips!

Speculation on my end:

-The 1M Grey and 5M Gold will be Bud Jones and go with the 2005 BJ Primary set. These will make their first appearances at the Big 50 final table. If they were Paulson they would be oversized and since the Blurple is mentioned as oversized these won't be. Also all Bud Jones WSOP chips are two colors, chip with edge colors.
-The Blurple 5M chip will be Main Event only. Pretty confident on this one since Main shows up in the listing.

Wow. The effort here is simply awesome, and a little amazing. I’ve been away from the chip world for a bit. So happy to see a thread like this. Well done.

Gw-

I was wondering if the WSOP was going to throw any curve balls at me in 2019 after doing this research and they already did on day 2!

It's been policy since 2015 to not use the Main Event chips 25k or higher in any other events. Event 2 saw the 25K Forest Green and 100K Hawaii Flowers at the final table. Guess I'm going to have to do some rewriting.

Great material. Do you have any data on Paulson set used for 50k Champions Tournament?
