Tangiers and the Quest for a Tina Hybrid Faux Inlay (29 Viewers)

I just got my samples and they are cool. Sadly I like the green $25 chip better than the blue $1 chip. Only saying sadly because I won’t order any $25’s for my cash set

Still planning on the 1.00, I like the vintage denom throwback.

But hey, I'll let folks outweigh me if feeling strong enough - will let folks react to this post and let majority decide. I could be pushed either way in the end.

:cool = $1.00
:wow: = $1
Looks like the $1.00 has the votes. I think one thing people aren’t thinking about is the shaped inlay shrinks the size of that inlay considerably and makes that denomination really small. That’s the first thing I noticed when I got the sample chip. Of course I’m old and those things become considerations . . Anyway thanks for putting it up for vote. Looking forward to the groupbuy.

I also got the $1 & $25 sample, and I'm glad I did because that green looked the best from the photos. It looks just as great in person!

Fortunately, I'm looking for a tournament set. I'm already happy with the pictures of the $5K, but I'm hoping the $25K will see some improvement. Although, I wouldn't mind a white $25K if I can get that.

Yeah the green chip was fantastic

Thanks to @Cratty and @justincarothers for the samples. Incredible is the only way to describe this project. The feel, quality and design are top-notch.

My only suggestion for improvement would be to increase the shaped inlay size. There is room by reducing the label’s color border.

Typical shaped inlay chips have approximately 2.3mm shaped inlays while the Tangiers’ are only approximately 2.0mm. I feel the shaped inlay portion of the label appears too small.

I’ve attached comparison photos - comparing to classic Vegas chips and popular China Clays.

Hopefully, I won’t get flamed for this! I’d buy them either way.

(I read through several pages of this thread and didn’t notice any mention of this - sorry and thanks if it’s already in the works!)

Agree! Challenge is I have no control over that spacing.. in my files it's actually very reduced. Tina or her label printer adjust that on their own.

Yes, great. In fact, all of your mock-ups show the inlay stretched considerably larger.

Maybe @Gear can share a tip to send to Tina that will help deliver more exacting results?! Gear will likely be printing custom Tangiers labels soon enough.

A good reason for the 43mm web mold with a 28.3mm label.
But these got a ‚house mold‘ and look awesome!

Many of us are very familiar with trim/bleed zones, but that gets thrown out the door with Tina and her supplier. More just a communication challenge and their process. We're also dealing with likely 3rd to 4th hand files/requests with a language translation once it finally gets to the person responsible for processing the images.

Trust me, they have communication issues even when I am communicating in Mandarin.

I felt like a lot of the information got lost when they passed down the message from Tina (Sales) to manufacturing to packaging to logistics

I’m very tempted to order some of these when released. Have you mocked up stack views? I’d be curious to see how they look in the lineup

I have in the past, but not with all changes incorporated (and actual colors differ enough from provided files in some cases that I need to gauge in person).

To that note.. and more of a general status note for those following along, when Tina is back up goal is to have a sample run of updated chip colors, edge spot colors, rolling edge art, and trialing a few alt inlay colors. I'm for the most part locked in on the color matches, but looking to assess some variation run to run, and just take a look at some slight adjustments.

Below is a quick mockup example.. reminder being these colors come out very differently in reality once printed in some cases (and even different now with new chip printer). On the inlays the "X"s represent the current color matches, the others being just tests.

The hope is this last run is just confirmatory.

That all to say.. still recognize the matches will neve be perfect from run to run.. but shooting for close enough. I also think anyone trying to repeat this again is nuts and will generally advise against trying to do this given the massive amount of trial/error. LOL

For the rainbow chip, could you look at a 8v rainbow? Just to spice it up from the same thing that’s been done 50 times.

Looking to pass these babies on to someone else that’s interested.
So…looking at this image, how does Tina get the Azteca labels absolutely perfect?! Can’t a similarly created image file and/or instructions be communicated to Tina for the Tangiers?

There's enough of a trim/bleed zone in the label that whoever the individual is that processes the label files for print likely doesn't adjust the sizing. Even if I created a inlay with ideal sizing, trim/bleed zones called out, it's been proved in past sets that those things are ignored and they will adjust to support their own perceived "acceptable".

In the end I am happy with the way they came out, even if slightly smaller than ideal.

You would also likely be surprised by the amount of back/forth on simpler things.. Justin has been caught in the middle a few times between Tina/I arguing on things. ha

As @Cratty mentioned, those labels have an image (the gray border) that fades bleeds beyond the cut line. Apparently they didnt need to reduce it much to fit. Go figure.

Amazing effort on this project. I look forward to ordering the final product. How many hours do you estimate you have put into this?

On the $5 chips (same with 500 & 25k) are you trying to achieve a truer/deeper red color? The pictures look more on the dull/pink-red hue.

Hopefully you can work out the inlay spacing with the printer; the spacing on your mock ups is perfect.

Not sure, no way to estimate, ha. Far more hours in color matching and minor tweaks than the base design.. not even sure how to comprehend all the time spent just thinking about changes in spare time.

To be honest, I'm not even going to ask on inlay sizing at this point with all the history we have on that one and general communication challenges. I'm also happy with the sizing (albeit I expected what we have given history from all my prior sets). There are just a handful of other tweaks being made that are much higher priority that I don't want to have missed with the colors, spots, rolling edges, etc.

And yeah, the chip colors on the $5/$500 will be going deeper. The chip color on the 25k will be staying, just because I tried alternate darker versions and the new printer seems to make those now come out more grey than deep blue.

I’m sure you spent countless hours putting this together and everyone can tell how passionate you are about it. I’m excited to see the final lineup!

Are you going to create a tournament set to leverage the same mold as well?
