Board Gamers, show us your loot! (4 Viewers)

I'm a BGA addict. What site am I going to, to play 1889? That's Japan, right? I like that one, probably the best intro 18xx out there.

18xx.games - if you're a BGA fan and you like 18xx, you're going to love this site.

and yes, 1889 is japan (it was actually rebranded as "Shikoku 1889" for the latest printing). agree it's a great intro game, but also still works quite well for experienced players.

If by “anyone else here” you mean “anyone in this thread”, then I may be interested. I’ve got a couple games of 18Chesapeake under my belt.

that's exactly what i meant! 1889 is a perfect step up from chessy. the rules are almost identical, just no train discards.

Birmingham. Our understanding was this had some rules tweaks from Lancashire that helped the game play better?

yeah, slightly different rules (beer is a new thing). i'm interested in trying it but i have only played lancashire.

Finally got a play of Ark Nova in. Happened to be checking my e-mail when re-stock notifications hit so managed to snag a copy off of MiniatureMarket. It sold out maybe 5 minutes after that!

I like the game but I'd like to get another couple plays in before I write any more thoughts. I'm trying not to get too carried away by the hype

Chess. Chess is my board game. Or Scrabble on a snowy weekend because my wife won't play chess or heads up poker.

We do have Ticket to Ride and I enjoy that occasionally.

My most recent acquisition:

Titan!

The 2008 Valley Games edition is very nice, but there's nothing like the Avalon Hill original. Just look at this amazing David Trampier artwork!

Well, it's punched now. :) For forty years this game has been waiting for this moment, just for me and my family to enjoy.

As an owner of the Valley Games edition, I'm green with envy!

I don't recall the muster diagram being colored. Is that original?
Nope. There isn't a separate muster diagram in the AH edition, there's just a small one in black-and-white in the manual. I downloaded a nice one from Boardgamegeek and printed and laminated a few copies to use as player aids.

I also bought a ton of good-quality plain six-siders, since the game comes with just four kinda cheap ones, and that's just not enough. You need to be rolling literal fistfulls of dice during the battles! This is very important.

We're using a deck of cards to smooth out the punishing bad luck of the movement die on the main board. Everyone gets a pack of thirteen cards of one suit; A-6 is at face value, 7-Q is face value minus six. Draw two, choose one. If you draw a King, reshuffle the whole pack and draw again. Drawing doubles (e.g. two and eight) lets you teleport. You can draw your two cards at the end of your turn, so that you can be planning out your moves while everyone else is taking their turns, so as to make turns go faster and reduce downtime.

We're also using a bunch of other rules variants to try and make the game play faster, with less downtime, and gentler player elimination. I wouldn't mind playing it as-written, but that's a pretty big ask for a game with the family, so maybe with these changes it'll be a little more family-friendly. So far we're all enjoying it! Had to pause the game partway through our first play, but hopefully we'll get back to it soon.

They don't make em like they used to!

I actually got a little bit of gaming in this weekend. I introduced a buddy to board games about a year ago and got him hooked on Welcome To. He now has about 1350 games of it played on BGA. He came over this weekend and we, along with a buddy that had played it before, played several games of Glory to Rome. My buddy was saddened that he could not play it anywhere online.

So far, nearly a 100% conversion rate on getting people into Glory to Rome.
