My weekly group took a break from Gloomhaven and played Scythe for a while. I'm pretty terrible at it, but I also kept getting stuck with some of the worst or hardest factions to start with (Blue then Green). By game 4 I was getting better and was lucky enough to get the powerful Red faction and made use of the repeated action power to win that one. I also realized that my friend had been dominating the prior two games with the Red faction by abusing its mech power to jump to any village on the board. He missed the two words that you could jump to any village "you control" which changes things a bit.
We've now switched up to D&D 5th edition, and I'm DMing the Starter Set. I've got 4 players, of which 1 is new to D&D, 2 played 2nd edition back in the day, and 1 of them has played 3.5. We had our 2nd session last night and the party barely survived. There were some great battles and some epic fails along the way, and it was a lot of fun.
If any of you are on Facebook, check out the BGSmack Board Game Deals Group to stay on top of games on sale. He does a great job of searching out deals. I recently bought two cheap games to play with the family that he posted:
Spirits of the Wild - a nice little 2 player game with beautiful art.
Ya Blew It! - It's a very luck heavy dice-rolling game with a mining theme. Easy enough to play with the kids and small enough to take on camping trips. Rolling the dice shaped like dynamite sticks is half the fun. Well worth $5 on sale.
