Controversial Chip & Poker Opinions (11 Viewers)

So… this one is probably gonna get me blocked by a ton of people, but I seriously do not get the appeal of very busy tables/felts.

For me, a poker table is… for playing poker. It is not to display your unconditional love for [insert whatever fandom] in flashy colours. A little texture adds something, a classy muted logo is often a great touch… but full blown illustrations/logos with blinding colours and contrast are beyond my understanding.

Cards should be the focus, chips should be the focus. Cards add visual clutter, chips add more, plus beverages, phones, card protectors, whatever… Even on a perfectly uniform felt there are already a ton of distracting stuff. You should be able to see what is important on the table without having to filter between a dozen layers of visual clutter that have absolutely zero purpose except scream "I have a theme. Look at my cool theme. I am such a fan of this theme, I am gonna theme everything!"

So, is that a raise with 5 red chips, or just the printed pepperoni of your great pizza parlour theme?

Honestly, I do not understand how people are able to play on these felts, I feel I am getting blind or epileptic just seeing them in a browser, I could not imagine having to play on them for a night.

(Please excuse the rhetorical flourishes, it is really written in a light jest tone, filtered by the translation barrier, and I really do not mean to offend anyone.
I do not get it, I do not like it, but if you have such a table and enjoy playing on them, and it brings you happiness, good for you, that is all that matters in the end.)

Edit: I should have kept this bomb to celebrate my 100th post in this amazing and friendly community. Too bad  :ROFLMAO:

Get the caveats and italics out of here, this is the unpopular opinion thread, be proud of your stance!

You just hate themes and colors and would rather everything in life be black and white, you're even perturbed by the fact that hearts and diamonds are red.

(No one's blocking you, valid point. I've got a topper design which is going to piss you off though, I'll tag you when it happens.)

Shit, now I have to unblock you.

Seriously though, agreed. Contrast is important and there needs to be a balance between nice/classy theme representation and visual-clutter. Working on that now myself.

I think this is actually pretty normal. But stick around long enough and you’ll learn to really appreciate a fun playing surface. Maybe not as something you want on your permanent table, but it is actually nice to switch it up and play on something new and a bit colorful. Surprisingly.

Never expected to enjoy this one at WaB, but to my surprise loved playing on this one far more than the cleaner black mat table.

As with most everything it’s a balance.

Hey, it is my first post in here. I'll know better and forget the gloves for the next ones ;)

I mean, you can have a My Little Pony felt with all the rainbow colours of the world without necessarily having a full blown printed illustration, but you do you.

Looking forward to seeing and having a discussion about your topper, if you are into that kind of things. Really.

@JeepologyOffroad No, I mean, your example is borderline for me, but clearly made with good taste. Matching colours, muted illustrations and logo. A bit much for my tastes, but it is not too much :p

When I saw the mat it was too much for my tastes.. until I played on it. Obviously it can get to a point of being crazy for the sake of being crazy, but I no longer subscribe to a hard and fast rule of “basic” playing surfaces despite staying pretty safe on my own table. At least now that @rjdev7 offers nice mats that you can swap out depending on your mood

You're not alone. I don't like busy felts. Keep the patterns simple and colors neutral (black, gray, blue) so the chips can be the star of the show. Otherwise it looks like unicorn diarrhea.

There are some really decent "Cheapo" slugged chips. Also there are some cheapo slugged chips I prefer over ceramics
Agreed. I’d put money into comfortable chairs before dropping thousands on nice chips.

One of the games I play in use the Crown Casino set. I really like them. They’re a bit slippery, but no more slippery than Matsuis. The only downside is there’s not a quarter to go with that set.

I had a Monaco tourney set from Discount Poker Shop. They were great, as well. They have a softer, less slippery feel than Claysmith sets.

I'm thinking about getting the Monaco's for a worry free decent tournament set

Not to mention if you get a decent set of sluggos that are soft you can always relabel if you want to

From a classical esthetic point of view, you are not wrong. Casinos, both old and new style, generally use whatever printed playing surface they need for the table game in question, and then perhaps a discreet brand logo somewhere. Really classic gaming tables have just the felt, and that's it. Just like a billiards table.

However, I do love (most of) the custom felt art that members have for their own table, because it is a true expression of their love of the game and the experience they want to convey.

I draw the line at LEDs, because that's the type of flash that I generally want to avoid. LEDs are totally overused in design. It seems that everything is undermount lit these days.

Naah, it is more a true expression of their love of wathever comic/movie/tv/sport franchise.

"Art" is cool on the wall of your pokerroom, not on the felt. It is not about a classical aesthetic point of view, it is about the nature of design and the role a table/felt is supposed to have and fulfil. Form should follows function. And a full printed background with an screenshoted frame from your favorite movie, with a couple cards suits to remember everyone that we are playing poker and not chess, a huge logo/name with drop coloured shadows, and some silhouettes of the movie characters to be sure that everyone gets the theme, is definitely not functional. I want to see the flop, not try to painstakingly decipher it among some super contrasted colourful logo, or make bet mistakes because the chips are lost against the super detailed 4K picture of your Pokemon.

It may eventually not be super gaudy and tacky, that happens, some are quite good from a graphical point of view, I'll admit it gladly, but even if the end result is really good, it adds nothing to the game, and worse, it makes it difficult. The principal job of a felt is to make the game easier, not complicate it. You can have a theme and a super cool felt art without making it detrimental to its main purpose.

Not controversial IMO. I was actually aiming for less contrast for the gray on black here:

I do agree in general that clean felts do look better - but I just got a bit carried away :D

No regerts!

I’m torn on this. For looks I love the detailed multi colored, busy felts but for play I think simplicity in design is the way. Maybe repeat your theme name in the betting line and a two color felt….. and I do like the very faded design lines in shadow effects for background if any.

Instructions unclear, accidentally made a mockup. Ship it?

I’m with you 100% and I’ll take it even a step further - cloths with writing on the. Are annoying because the writing is either sideways or upside down for more than half the players.
To be fair, I don’t appreciate the overuse of theming anyway. Busy felts, annoying dealer buttons that aren’t a contrast to the busy felt and thus hard to see, five dollar fucking cut cards - it’s all too much for me. Just freaking paint your theming on the celiling already!
