Controversial Chip & Poker Opinions (13 Viewers)

it's totally •awesome• that Paulson doesn't sell to the public

Everybody on the forum should be damn happy that this is the case. If Paulson opened the floodgates to public purchases, then the value of everybody's hoarded chipsets would plummet into almost-oblivion.

That's a good point. When I think of Paulsons, I think of the kinds of chips they're never making again. Those will probably hold their value forever. But the majority of the Paulsons in circulation here aren't necessarily like that.

Personally,I'd be fine with that. Chips from actual casinos have value baked in, but NAGBs? If the price fell to a buck or two per chip I'd just chuckle at those that threw an extravagant amount of money at sets - and I say that as someone with multiple NAGB sets!

However, my bank account is happy Paulson does not sell to the general public. Because a pink-chip limit set on THC would be nice...

Pretty much all of the NAGB chips are excuses to use:
A) colors that don't go together
B) basically every dayglow color so as to be as obnoxious as possible.
C) silly inlays generic enough to appease to the masses to maximize profits.

Of course, there is one set exception.

As someone who would like a set of minty fresh Paulsons to play with, but currently has none at all, I am most definitely not happy with it!

I am very new so perhaps my feeling about this is not representative. Don't know.

I do not see chips as an "investment" that ought to "go up" or even to preserve value. I have nice chips for the purpose of playing with them, shuffling them, admiring them, and just having them because I like them. Any preservation of value is a nice but unnecessary side effect.

I've seen similar sentiments in the world of trading card games (which I'm no longer a part of). When companies reprint sought-after cards--especially those that are valued for their gameplay use rather than purely as collector's items--some of the people complain about the destruction of secondary market value, and others celebrate the cards becoming more accessible to people who want to play with and enjoy them. I am very much in the latter camp and I admit that I have little sympathy for the former.

The Reserved List is an atrocity. I'd welcome its elimination & reprints of early MTG stuff like the original dual lands probably only slightly less than I'd welcome GPI making Paulson and Bud Jones chips available to the home market again.

Where's the controversial opinion?

The Aurora Star and Empress Star cash sets do include some bright colors, but not all bright colors. The AS quarter comes to mind, it is often criticized as to what could have been because of it's brownish base. I happen to like it just as it is. Even the AS $1 is a nice chip with some dull colors, I really like it.

I’m actually glad you brought this up. I am normally making this kind of argument in Magic spaces, where I do own a lot of RL cards - but to me, they are game pieces. I own them to play them, yes, even the very expensive ones. Likewise, I will only own chips and chip sets that I plan to play with.

It feels harder for me to make that argument in the poker chip world, since I only own one set of Paulsons. But I very much put my money where my mouth is for Magic, and would be happy to see all of those old cards reprinted, so more people can experience the joy of playing with them.

Besides - old collector stuff would maintain its value, even if Paulson opened up shop with the public again. Sure, you can make something with the same edge spots and what not, but you can’t make a new thing with 75 years of history and nostalgia in it.

Used casino chips with worn and flea-bit edges are the best chips- full of history and hooker juice, they’re the real deal, contributing to the pain and pleasure of many.

Mint casino chips are the worst chips- an art project tucked away and ignored in the closet, they’re the chipping equivalent of a third string QB wearing a Super Bowl ring despite never seeing a game snap the entire season. May look pretty, but ain’t a player.

That's not what I mean. I'm talking about 8 players committing to come to a game that starts at 7:00. And it's now almost 8:00 and only 4 have shown up... GRRRRRR!!!

This. It’s frustrating when you book a full table but only 4-5 show up in the first two hours. My gang will play shorthanded, but it’s really a drag.

I would be fine with this. The value of being able to order direct from GPI, especially if customs were possible, would be worth it.

People who buy a large set of chips, murder them, then decide they don’t want to finish their custom project and list them for sale as murdered casino x chips.

No rational reason for this to piss me off. But it does.
I hear this. And sometimes people like to act like they’ve increased the value of the casino chips, by tearing the inlays out of them - that one cracks me up.
Ultimately it seems harmless when people do it to mass chip room release chips or to NAGB chips which were often created to be destroyed. But it definitely makes me wince when I see people drilling the lead out of rarer older chips, especially when they just turn around and resell them.

I wonder if this happens in other hobbies -are people constantly modifying and customizing limited availability stuff? I bet it happens, I just don’t know much about many other collector type hobbies.
(ha, and if it does, I bet there are other guys like me, complaining about it!)

Modifications are a constant thing among sports / powerful car drivers who spend on their shitty cars the amount corresponding to a slightly used, or even new, no-options Porsche.

When it comes to chips, out of both respect and the desire to economize, I have only overlabelled both NAGB and real casino chips.
But I 've mostly built my own customs.

I think a big impetus behind this is lack of feedback.

Someone murders something and 1 or 2 people say “oh noooo”.

But - and I’m not someone that knows or usually cares too much about history - you have people out here murdering pretty rare stuff that fits multiple sets and creating straight ugliness.

Am I going to post it’s ugly? Nope. Is someone else? Nope. The name of the game today is kumbayah. I would’ve made or built some really dumb shit if I didn’t have people stop me, so I’m thankful I was stopped.

They are some very expensive, very ugly sets out there, but what ya gonna do - beauty’s in the eye of the beholder.
