One confirmed death due to omicron in the entire US as of today
I don’t know if this is a relevant point of data right now. Omicron went from ~3% of cases to ~75% of the cases last week in the US. It’s impact won’t be fully realized until at least a month if not two or three. It does seem less dangerous than Delta but not enough to outweigh its higher transmissibility and vaccine resistance.

Sounds like all my data is irrelevant, then. :)

Just trying to avoid you sounding like all the people at the beginning of Covid who said, “it’s only 200 cases” “it’s only 4 deaths” “this will come and go, someday it will be like it never happened” :)

I’d be content just knowing what stat to follow. Clearly it’s not number of shots given or number of deaths.

Pretty sure nobody in the US dies from covid anymore, at least according to the news. I haven’t seen a death ticker since February.

All I know is it’s not number of deaths right now. At least when its less than a week and a half from when the new variant only made up 3% of cases and it can take a week for serious symptoms to present themselves.

Not to downplay your point of how vast the US is, but just saying....the data is much different than what I am
I did GET your point...I merely tried to point out that the data you posted seemed off. Not trying to butthurt anyone. I will bow out now.

No butthurt here. I definitely understand how my correct data may have seemed off at first glance. Cheers.

The US leads the world in new daily deaths, averaging 20% of the worlds CORONA deaths each day. Currently around 1,000 per day. IDGAF about Delta, Omicron, or old-school "19". It's tiny and killing people at an astonishing rate.

Not sure why @ekricket hasn't seen a "death ticker". Reuters isn't a hard news agency to find. The CDC is also forthcoming. The WHO makes you scroll halfway down to get to the Death Ticker. I know some people think the American news agency and the CDC and the WHO are just anti-Trump so they falsify the data, so I will also give you a link to the European Centre for Disease Control.

If you think Liechtenstein is plotting against you I can't help.

I'm not at the point of saying "cancel everything", but if you do host, the smartest things are either "only vaccinated welcome" or "masks mandatory". Especially this time of the year where people tend to visit elderly family, it's not going to kill anyone to be safe.

Ignoring the data might.

Having relevant data might help. What’s relevant? That’s the question. I would expect that for something this deadly, this world altering, this severe of a pandemic, that a person wouldn’t have to go far or deep to find data that’s unquestionable. But that’s not how it works. People are told to wear masks - but anything is a mask? Almost two years into this and there’s not a standard that’s enforced? Almost two years into this and there’s still confusion?

Yeah, sounds pretty serious. It’s not about deaths anymore apparently, it’s something else and nobody knows what it is. Is it bout flattening the curve again?

The CDC is also pretty straight forward on this topic as well. Your Guide to Masks.

As for enforcement, airlines have done a pretty good job - I mean it's flight attendants (who certainly are not getting all the respect they deserve from some "anti-maskers") and not armed, uniformed police officers, but they do try. As far as I know, all Federal buildings also enforce the mask thing.

Everywhere else, enforcement would take an act of Congress. Literally, an act of Congress. Good luck in getting that toxic workplace to agree on anything.

See this is what starting to bother me. When Omicron was first noticed experts said that it would be two weeks before we would know if it was mild because the more serious cases take a while to present themselves. It’s been well over two weeks and they keep moving the goalposts and saying “oh it’s only young people” or “it’s only vaccinated people. So we don’t really know the effect”.

And I should say I’m no denier, I’m 100% pro vaccine, but I’m frustrated. We’ve always been one bus crash away from an overloaded ICU. Why didn’t the governments invest in our healthcare system in the last two years? Trillions of dollars have been spent and it’s all been going to the wrong place.

I’m just very annoyed that it’s been nearly 2 years and no one has a plan for this beyond doing the same old shit that obviously is not working. Our lives have not improved since being vaccinated (beyond obviously being at less risk) and I feel like we’ve just been consistently lied to. It’s clear that omicron is more contagious and less virulent, and this is the variant we’ve needed to move on.

I know my mental health is suffering beyond any other period of my life, and at a time when most people need it, everything is cancelled again, all Christmas gatherings, all dinners, Gyms (which is stupid since healthy people aren’t getting sick, and gyms are full of healthy people, we should be encouraging that), travel etc.

My solution, invest money into healthcare, if you choose to not vaccinate you don’t get an icu bed (unless you can’t vax for medical reasons) and let’s move on!

For what it’s worth I would never feel selfish about throwing any type of gathering right now, I’ve done my part, I’ve been vaccinated and so have my kids. It’s time to live again.

There is a plan. It has worked for polio, mumps, rubella, smallpox and others.

Get everyone vaccinated, and it has no place left to go... until the next bat shits in someone's corn flakes - which may be a very long wait indeed.

& @JScott Or it will be an endemic like the flu but either way at this stage I agree, it’s the same plan. I think the government could have done more aka more readily available/affordable/free at home testing but that’s still not getting us out of the current situation and will only be as effect as people are willing to participate in stopping the spread.

Feel like most people will disagree with you on this so it’s moot but.. that’s a huge leap and I’ll use a term the right uses all the time and I personally hate… that’s a slippery fucking slope.

I'm astounded that people really think that this virus would have been over and done with by now (well knowing humans and the instant gratification society that we have created, I'm not really that astounded). It has been about 2 years since this virus was first identified, which is really only a blip in the grand scheme of things. Safe and effective vaccines were developed and brought to the public in less than a year, which in historical context is a fraction of the blink of an eye. Getting those vaccines into 8 Billion people is no small task, and until EVERYONE (or at least the vast majority of the WORLD population) is vaccinated, then the virus is not going to disappear, rather it is going to continue to mutate and to spread to vulnerable populations. Just because YOU are vaccinated doesn't matter to this virus, it will just infect someone else, which will allow it to mutate into a variant that is vaccine resistant (which WILL infect you).

Everyone take a deep breath. We will get through this eventually, but it's not going to be next week, or next month, or even next year. When? Once all of Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and N & S America (the continents, not the states) are effectively immunized through vaccine or infection (assuming that the virus doen't mutate in the interim to completely avoid previous immune responses), or if/when the virus mutates such that it becomes benign but dominant in transmissibility (don't hold your breath waiting on the last option).

And yes, masks/reducing travel/reducing contacts/maintaining distance/etc. does help to reduce the spread of the virus. Doing so for a week or two isn't going to stop it, but nobody said that it would. What they said (or at least what I read and heard) was that it might buy us some time so that the hospitals and health care systems wouldn't be completely overwhelmed. And that hasn't changed so much. So get used to the idea of more masks/reducing travel/reducing contacts/maintaining distance/etc. for the foreseeable future, or get used to the idea of becoming infected and therefore infecting others (your parents/grandparents/other family and community members thank you for choosing the first option)..

But I agree, it would be nice to play live poker again.

I’m going to assume “keep moving the goalposts” and “constantly lied to” are just your frustrations creeping through?
I believe the real truth is that science has been scrambling to catch up for almost two years now. They don’t know shit for sure, and as soon as they do, bam, new variant. They’re taking their best guesses and governments are doing their best to work with the half-assed constantly changing information that they have.
Call me an optimist, but I think everybody is doing their best.

Not giving up live poker. The battle can't be won. Herd immunity or six feet under is the dominant male attitude amongst the under 60 crowd. Not going back to living the life of a hermit.

Fully vaxed and boosted, fully expect to catch the virus at some point. ~ Murica

I ALMOST went to the card room tonight (I am boosted as well), but laid off for protection of my extended family and my vacation week. If I were not seeing everyone over Christmas and spending a few days at the beach with them, I would have gone. I am sure there will be a huge upswell for the two weeks after Christmas, I will be back to live after that.

Not to argue, but just a different perspective. I went to the card rooms over the summer, a bunch of times. As soon as I was fully vaxxed, I was there, with a mask first, and then without. I’m not living in fear. But then they started talking about delta and I took a break, to see how that would pan out. And now it’s omicron and almost certainly a huge surge, so I’ll hang back for a while. Just trying to be sensible.

Ugh I remember that month post vaccine/pre-delta. Those were the (few) days man…

for me it’s more about planning, if I know I’ll be around family then I’ll keep a low profile. But if I don’t have plans or know I will only be around my house then I’m open to going to a poker room or the casino.

not at all. Keep in mind when I’m talking about “they” I mean politicians and the media. The experts often try and talk sense but it’s ignored. Most infectious disease specialists are saying to approach omicron with a healthy dose of caution. Not anything like what we’ve seen happening.

And yes, they are moving the goalposts. First it’s % vaccinated, then that’s not good enough, then it’s # of cases, ignoring severity, then it’s a new variant and just a couple of weeks to determine severity, then it’s months. And bam… new round of lockdowns.

The lies come from the media headlines saying “perfectly healthy 16 year old dies of covid” when the picture shows a morbidly obese child, or the recent headlines saying “first omicron death in UK” when they even admit he died WITH omicron and not OF it.

I’m done with it. They’re killing business and printing money to try and keep votes. I’m much more concerned about hyperinflation and government debt than I am omicron at this point.

And the complete lack of respect to mental health shows they don’t care about our wellbeing. This past week I was grabbing a friends guns because he’s been threatening suicide. The last round of lockdowns were the nail in the coffin for his business of over 8 years.

Like I said, you don’t need to be an anti vaxxer or denier to see the issues here.

I had CNN on earlier and the news talker lady was interviewing a Dr./nurse lady and when she leaned into the medical professional and got her to admit people were saying they wished they’d been vaxxed, with their final words before intubation, I wanted to puke. That’s not journalism.
I’m not sure what to say about the rest - we’re having tough times and it’s ugly and I’m not sure who to blame or why, but the media is doing no good.

I’m 100% pro vaccine. But for some reason when I argue some of these things people think I’m anti everything. ;)

I actually think the solution is to just not give anti vaccer’s beds in the icu. If they argue I’d wonder why they would accept help if they don’t trust modern medicine.

It’s a slippery slope for sure, but so is the path we’re on now, with us locking down every time there’s a jump in cases or a new variant.

This is one guy who actually had a good approach. (Sask premier) https://fb.watch/a4UyRdsCrD/
