Backing up onto the road was the first mistake, but since he made it back to the road, he should have move down the road.

He slid on ice and crashed into a bunch of other cars that have already crashed - most likely from the same patch of ice. Did he really think the ice suddenly vanished?

Maybe it's because I frequently work wrecks on the interstate, but I view it the same as working in a field of gunfire.

If someone is shooting at you, and you run over a sign, you don't back off the sign into the field of gunfire. You sure as shit don't then get out to pull debris out as they are still shooting (or in this case reloading). You GTFO.
