Combo, table plus spudgun. I guess the demographics overlap?

I need to make a ad...

Box of nothing $100.

Nothing in it, but could be a great place to put something. Box has been used for many great hours of holding stuff, but now the stuff is out of the box and it's time to let it go. Has a hole in it, and a foul-smelling stain, but only noticeable when you look at it, or get close to it. Can be yours to hold your stuff for your next move or for storage.

Box not included.

You joke, but people used to do something similar on eBay (and maybe still do).

They'd advertise an Xbox box with an ad that was truthful but easy to misunderstand if you didn't read carefully. I can only assume some suckers would bid thinking they were getting a cheap Xbox, when in reality they were just getting the empty packaging.

You're allowed to sell product packaging on eBay. The description is accurate. Caveat emptor, pal.

I personally don't like scammers (who does?), but with all the buyer protection available on eBay, people who fall for this have no one to blame but themselves.

I'll concede that maybe there's value to some people in purchasing such a thing - I threw away my original box and want a replacement.

But caveat emptor doesn't excuse those who intentionally try to take advantage of people. I remember many of these ads were specifically designed to trick people or at least muddy the waters.

My favorites are for free firewood. You just need to cut down the tree and haul it away, don't forget to grind the stump!

From a Craigslist ad in Iowa City—those chairs are spectacular!
