Guns you own (3 Viewers)

House defense.
If you live on a farm. Ok
If you live alone, OK
But if home defense implies the possibility that one day you will had to make use of a weapon indoors. I would consider another weapon.

Cause if you use birdshot or tripre-0 you have to consider the shot pattern and what you could hit around and behind the threat.

If you use buckshot... Only consider behind the threat because it will penetrate and go thru.

So eventually another member of the family could be at risk

I'm aware of spreadshot shotguns have. If intruder comes in through the front door, we wouldn't be pointing it towards any bedrooms on other sides of walls. We have my Glock with hollow points that I primarily use. Shotgun would be another/alternate option for the wife to help her since she's bad at precise aiming at the moment. Already taught her the problems a shotgun can create if not used properly in an incident.

Now unless there's certain shells to help not have them easily penetrate walls, I'll definitely consider.

Yup. I'd say it's about the best value you can find for a clay gun, and can take a drop or two and survive in the field.

This is good to hear. I have an 870 with a breaching choke... I was recently invited to participate in a clay pigeon outing which may turn into a league. Two questions:

1. What shells do you use for clays (certainly not the sabot slugs...I assume birdshot, but not sure what size is preferable.

2. Recommendations on a type of choke to switch out for clays?

Grab a old Remington 870 bird gun. Pump action, but accurate and easy to shoot.
I have an older Rem 1100 (wood, not synthetic) that I like a lot. Beretta A300 Outlander as well.
I have had both. They both came out of Washington State Patrol vehicles and I got them in trade at a gun show. You know those casino used Paulsons that are perfectly worn for buttery smooth shuffling? That's how these two shotguns were. Perfectly broken in. Excellent reliability and at great prices. Love my 1100 so much.

Here is Dave Chappelle discussing home defense with a shotgun. NSFW.

I’ve had some very good luck with police trade in stuff, I’ve always ordered through places like recoilguns though, I never have found any locally. Everything I have got has been in very good shape and looks hardly used. I’m a Springfield fan and I’ve never owned a glock, I want to taste the koolaid so I think I’m going to try to find a nice g22 from a police trade in site and give it a try.

How much for a bazooka? :ROFLMAO:
Bigger yet :nailbite:

Recoil or Aim Surplus are good sources. They are usually in good shape, but sometimes you may need to replace barrels and other parts.

I have an Italian Beretta 92 9mm police trade in that I bought for about $250 when they were all over the place. Other than some very minor holster wear it looks almost new. I’d be surprised it has 500 rounds through it. Lots of Gen 3 Glock 22’s for about $300 lately. Hard to pass up at that price if you are in the market.

Modified for close, full for everything else, but you'll most likely just leave in a full.. Shot size, whatever you want will work. 8 is fine

Accurate?

Obviously, full choke is gonna give the biggest spread pattern, and it's not gonna take much to crack clay... But the bigger the spread pattern, the less dense the birdshot. Am I over thinking this?

I've only ever shot clay fucking around with a 20 gauge (not mine) and I've only ever shot slugs out of my 12 gauge.

That's dead on. Once you get the stuff down, full can cover it all, but the others can help a ton when your playing around.

Improved cylinder is ideal. Best at 20 to 30 yds.

I typically use 8-shot "target" loads. Have had success with Winchester/Remington/Estate brands.

Sorry but that is fully hypothetical.
When you'll hear a noice and considering the time reaction at 3am in the morning the threat can be anywhere in your house.

Go and ask, please move on to the front door so I can safely shot toward you general direction and tell me how it goes :)

Basing my comment where we live currently, there's very little else they can enter from, especially with barred windows. Now in a home setting it will be different. Can't risk shooting a shotgun in the direction of where the childrens' rooms are, so it would take more planning and safety measures to take when that happens.

But like I asked, are there shells made to not be as piercing, such as hollow points for handguns (obviously the content in shells cannot function like hollow points, but if there're certain contents in shells that would maybe prevent wall penetration)?

Some people solve the over-penetration problem with birdshot and melted crayons to make wax “slugs”. I’ve never done it but the idea is intriguing. The energy from that would be substantial on impact but would not likely carry on through target or backstops.

I'm close enough to Aim Surplus to be able to pick up in person. Great company to deal with. If you see a bargain, jump on it quickly, the best stuff disappears fast.

I'm definitely looking that up, that's fascinating.

If barring the windows is effective, just bar the door in the same way at night.

You must live in a bad bad place, barred windows, guns for defense, defense plans, plotting shot patterns and angles and shit.

Not really. But rather be safe than sorry. I like planning ahead.

Is not about where they enter, it's about your reaction time and where the bad guy will be at that point on time.

I will not try to change your mind as I cannot fight the US gun culture. But I just recommend you to go to a shoot house or set up your local range with human size target and do some drills... then make your own informed decision.

Growing up in Los Angeles, was never a fan of guns (just my own personal ownership).

Having a wife and kids and leaving near the country side changed that up and left me wanting something, just in case. I know I could put the gun in a fingerprint or other wise locked case behind a false wall in my closet, but being fearful of my kids getting ahold of it in some magical fashion, the only place a gun was going was in a legit Liberty style safe bolted to the floor in the basement.

I gave up on the idea when my wife asked if I was going to run downstairs, ask the intruder to wait momentarily at the door, go to the basement and grab the gun, and then back to first floor to meet the intruder.
