Guns you own (4 Viewers)

Is not about where they enter, it's about your reaction time and where the bad guy will be at that point on time.
Noted. Like I said, where we are there's hardly any way for someone to get in besides the front door, and no way to do so without making some noise since our place is always quiet at night until our kids wake up.But it'll be a different story once I finally own a home.

I will not try to change your mind as I cannot fight the US gun culture. But I just recommend you to go to a shoot house or set up your local range with human size target and do some drills... then make your own informed decision.

What's a shoot house?

Not so much gun culture and being a gun nut, as I just want to protect my family. Cannot imagine what it'd be like if they ever got hurt from someone. I've been to plenty of ranges for practice, friends' properties, and a few courses for firearms, but nothing for shotguns yet. Don't know any other friends who own shotguns so I need to brush up more on them.

Hmmm. Anyone interested in a Remington 870 Special Field 12 ga., one owner, never fired?

(The 870 is Improved, if that matters...)

You know, reading through this thread has made me do some thinking. My mom and dad were both WW2 veterans. We always had weapons around the house. I earned my first weapon -- a Mossberg 342KA bolt-action 22 rifle with a fold-down plastic foregrip -- by selling Christmas cards when I was 13 (bet you can't do that today!)

I spent my army career as a weapons (ordnance) officer, including 26 somewhat stressful months in the scenic central highlands of Vietnam ('68-'70). In the years that followed, living in Germany, NJ, MD, and VA, I always had locked and loaded weapons hidden within arms reach of my front door, favorite chair, and bed.

A year after moving to FL, I guess I got over my paranoia and put them away. Maybe that was spurred by retirement and hiring a house cleaning team to come in every two weeks -- damned annoying to have to remove and hide the weapons every other Thursday.

While I fully understand the needs of LEOs, having grown up in an FBI-dominated neighborhood in NJ, I really feel sorry for what I see among the non-LEO contingent in this thread. I'll just leave it at that.

So the next step is getting rid of mine. Shit, I'm 73, I'm more likely to shoot myself in the foot than need 'em for home defense in a FL gated community.

For the Mossberg, it's a great kid's rifle, and I'd like to pass it on, but I don't know any appropriately-aged kids any more. So if anyone knows of -- or has -- a kid who would benefit from the experience, the Mossberg is available for free to the right person.

Then there are a couple of maybe more interesting items that I just decided I'll sell:

1. Beretta 950BS "Jetfire" 25 cal. auto (tip-up barrel).
2. S&W 659 9mm stainless 4" auto.
3. S&W 686 .357, L-frame stainless, 2.5 inch barrel. From first batch made (~1985), no model "dash" anything, never fired.

All have fewer than 50 rounds through them.

If anyone is interested in any of these, let's talk. Maybe even do a deal at the SQM, for simplicity.

If anyone has a recommendation for an on-line gun sales site, it would be appreciated. (There used to be such a FL-based site, but it disappeared a couple of years ago.)

I'll hang onto my original Browning Hi Power for now. Only single action, but dead reliable, and we've been through a lot of years together... :cool

We call it the fun house.

I should put you in touch with my father, he lives down in edgewater and would likely have some interest

Basing my comment where we live currently, there's very little else they can enter from, especially with barred windows. Now in a home setting it will be different. Can't risk shooting a shotgun in the direction of where the childrens' rooms are, so it would take more planning and safety measures to take when that happens.

But like I asked, are there shells made to not be as piercing, such as hollow points for handguns (obviously the content in shells cannot function like hollow points, but if there're certain contents in shells that would maybe prevent wall penetration)?
Here's a potential solution.

Best gun (and literally best bang for the buck, also:D) I 've ever fired with, in my life.
I 'm sure our American friends could come up with a "home defence" role for that too. :ROFLMAO:

Best individual firing performance in my life (8 out of 10 on centre, in automatic mode, at 300 meters) was with that (Heckler und Koch 11 Heavy Automatic Rifle, or Light Machine Gun, however you see it):

It's been 24 years since, though:(

the only place a gun was going was in a legit Liberty style safe bolted to the floor in the basement.

Try a Mossberg Loc-box mounted in your closet. At night, open the lock for quick access in an emergency. All other times, lock it up and take the key with you.

How many of you have actually had to use your guns in self defence?

Genuine question
Twice at home... Both drunks. One decided my second floor balcony was going to get him into my sweet apartment. Night owl, he destroyed my Christmas lights. *cla-clack*. He scurried off.

But I also have to carry at work rarely, so it's kinda apart of the job.

What's a shoot house?
It's a reproduction of a random house, with rooms /bedrooms, hallway, living room, etc. where you can actually shoot to targets (which may be no shoot targets). It's used to simulate certain situation like a home intrusion.
Some drills include, you laying on a bed and you can act as soon you hear a noice. Which means 1)assessing the noice 2) reaching your gun 3) find the thread 4)identify 5)act accordingly

I have never fired on another person.
The only legitimate chance of firing at another person in my life would be against foreign soldiers invading my country. Didn't have the opportunity (thankfully so, 'cause this type of guys tend to shoot at you too). :D

Sounds fun!

Level 2 drill would be to react while laying someone on a bed; Level 3 would be to react while pooping or having a shower. Make sure you carry the weapon at all these circumstances:rolleyes:

The first house I bought when I was 21 the houses were very close together. My bedroom window was right next to the neighbors driveway and side door.

I was in bed one night and heard them come home and he’s screaming at her. Then I hear him hitting her and can see her on the ground and he is standing over her. I raced out the door with my pistol at my side. I yelled at him and when he saw me he went in the house. She left him that night. Thankfully he didn’t come at me because I would have dropped him. Closest I ever came and hopefully that is the closest I’ll even be to actually using one.

I knew her from high school. She was not the type you marry, that’s for sure. But he had no right to hit her. She was a dancer and sleeping with some guy that was going to make her famous lol.

Yeah that's pretty crazy. No gun required though lol so I'm not counting it.

They sound like they were lovely neighbours  :ROFLMAO: . The side piece wasn't named Harvey was he?

(Serious follow up question, out of curiosity as to whether people worry about this)

I would imagine your blood was moving after this, so adrenaline alone would’ve kept you up. But did you have a concern that he also had a gun and may retaliate given his own possible heightened state?

I could see him hitting her clearly and didn’t see a gun, but anything was possible. If he had one it would been concealed and have to be drawn while I had mine ready to go.
