Have Chinese cards mold replica sets gone too far? (5 Viewers)

I’ll gladly take on Jim’s “hassle” to make the money he’s making off flipping chips. I agree, his business is different than the eBay vendor trying to fleece everyone, but I don’t think Jim is doing God’s work. I’m betting not many would turn down that opportunity.
No argument.

I spent some time out in Utah last month and had the chance to visit Jim and the warehouse and have to agree that people really underestimate all that is involved in his process. Sure, actually picking up, selling, and shipping the chips is straightforward, but he enlightened me on the legal and political headaches that he has has gone through to make it possible and it does not seem appealing. If it was easy, other people would be doing it.

But in fact every single one of us has that exact opportunity, right? why hasn't anyone else started a business doing the same thing? You say you wouldn't turn it down but to me every day "you" (the royal you, I'm using it to include everybody who isn't Jim at TCR, myself imcluded) don't fill out the paperwork to register your new business and jump in with both feet to bring closed casino poker chips to the market you are in fact turning that opportunity down.

I don't think Jim is the second coming- I think he's a businessman that is in the business of finding things I might want and offering them for sale to me. And these things he offers for sale are not only at usually a pretty reasonable price (considering everything from what they are sold for on the secondary market to difficulty to get) but something I can't get on my own from somewhere else.

The effort and time that Jim puts in, not to mention the taxes and fees that he pays and has paid in the past, should set what he does apart from people that devote a few hours and 5k to make a profit the "same" way he does.

To me that's why Jim is good for the "community" and flippers are the result of a "market place".

The doors quite open, Jim doesn’t have a monopoly, you are perfectly free to take on the job if you can do more than critique someone’s success Anybody is free to start this kind of service up instead of bitching. If it’s so easy do it, Get off your ass and start up the business and then maybe prices would be more competitive.

Until you do that you are just another whiny bitch complaining about someone who has the guts and fortitude to start a business and be successful.

“But it’s too hard”.
Fuck that. Put up or shut up.

Equity whining bitches

I swear…this is how I talk to my kids. My neighbors love it when my windows are open on a warm spring day….I close them when they start crying.

Well hard to argue this but if JIM does not buy them to flip they could possibly sit in a casino managers office or shed for a few years and then be sold elsewhere for much much less say on Craigslist or sold at a local springtime garage sale. I know I’ve personally bought .10 cent chips from a local casino called Win River. They sat for years as old “extras” and fortunately for me they were ceramics, thus not coveted, and also available for ten pennies. The poker manager could not believe someone would pay ten cents for old casino chips. He confessed after he made a few sets for the “elders” he thought they were just as good as trash. Now some of the best local poker players have sets too, and u guessed it, they got those sets for .10 cents a piece. That was good enough business for me but then again I didn’t see an opportunity to quit my day job as I didn’t have enough chips to re-flip…

My concern (and I hate to say this out loud, because it comes dangerously close to that sainthood crap) is that if Jim wasn’t there with all the legalities taken care of and a big handful of cash, it might be easier for the casinos to simply send them to the chipper shredder machine.

My kids are millennials but they damn sure aren’t entitled equity brats. They know that I’m not going to give them a participation ribbon and they wouldn’t take it if I did, they’d be insulted. They know they have limitless opportunity, and that I’ll support them 100% in any endeavor, but they’d work their ass off and earn it.
And they do appreciate their successes and they own their failures and learn from them.
It’s not a hard stance or tough love, it’s realistic and gets them through life in better shape. Plus they don’t hate me for life not being fair.

Hard to argue this point, and let me clarify. Flippers offer me no grief, anger, or bad vibes what so ever. Flippers offer me a service. It’s my choice, and for that I salute them, and of course you. God bless America, and Tina.

I’m with you on America!
And you know what? If flippers keep chips out of VAULTS, I’m with you on them too.

I agree and yet I’ll bet Tina just caused some flip vaulters to puke or even worse… poop their pampers.

Game on.

Amen.

When did this become a thread for old timers to pat themselves on the back for raising their kids?

You guys want a medal or maybe a dealer button?

News flash. You're SUPPOSED to raise your kids. Just because some other idiot may have done a shitty job in comparison, it doesn't make you special or noble.

You’d need his contacts in the various gaming commissions and his relationship with various legal firms to get approval to purchase the chips rather than have them disposed of.

Maybe it’s a little easier once you’re up and running, but the barrier to entry is somewhat significant.

No! I for one remember Coca Cola in bottles and my dog knows how to sit! If you agree, comment AMEN and share. One share is one thumbs up to family values and apple pie!

I think that was a Chris Rock routine once upon a time.

About ten posts back. Try to keep up. I know multiple thoughts are hard for some, so we’ll try to dial it back for the slower bunch. Let us know when we move too fast for you again.

Just another post in a long line of success bashing. Look, we are sorry you aren’t as successful as some. We get it. But no reason to drag everyone else down to your level.

I'm not justifying any position. I don't own any cards mold replicas. Nor do I intend to. I also don't own any tribute sets of any kind.

It's laughable that arrogant folks who just have deeper pockets look at folks with scorn who just have the same motivation - searching for a poker chip set to enjoy.

Get a grip. Buying poker chips is not some noble pursuit. It's a hobby.

Man I’m sorry that you feel left out. Here is an award just for you to help you feel better

I wish some of the others that have tried would chime in to give their behind the scenes take.

I’m not bashing Jim’s success one bit, but I’m sure as hell not going to bend over in worship to him either. So many people act like he’s a saint for selling us chips. He’s not doing it out of the goodness of his heart. He’s doing g it to make a freaking killing. And good on him for being able to do so. I’m as pro-capitalism as it gets. I’m not going to kiss Tim Cook’s ass for letting me buy an iPhone either.

Nope. IMO They have only just begun, and I am extremely thankful for it. Join the movement, buy from Tina (no begging or tickets required) oh ya…. and bring the thousands you saved to the poker game and simply raise the blinds!!!

Yes. It’s not just casinos past and present that have had their artwork ripped off; it’s happened to members too.
But on the bright side, evidence suggests that these garbage chips don’t age well. So maybe people will figure out sooner rather than later that they’ve sold out their friends and neighbors for junk, and this fad will pass into history.

I appreciate the feedback. I don’t think we’ve heard enough feedback on long term usage. Their durability isn’t my real gripe, but it’s certainly important, one way or the other.
