I personally see no problem with flipping the chips. Jim brought them to market and in order to get them sold quickly he priced them below “market value”. I think you’d be an idiot to expect a person to not try and buy a full 2000 chip order and then sell them. We’ve seen chip prices hit all time highs with RHC’s going for more than $5 a chip. When prices get that high it’s either going to be me or someone else who buys the chips and then sells them. It happens all the time with stuff like this just look at brands like Supreme who do limited drops and then people scoop them up to sell on the secondary market. Jim keeps his prices low and for a lot of these chips demand outstrips supply so I’d argue that a flipper acts as a broker since they’re the one who has to wait for the sale and invest thousands into inventory which may sell slowly. That person is taking a risk, albeit a small one, and for that risk they are asking for what the market sees as a fair price. The flippers don’t drive up the prices we do. If we didn’t want prices to be so high then we shouldn’t buy chips at prices we think are to high. Chips like the Jack Cinci $25’s sell for near ChipRoom prices because that’s what buyers will buy them for while Jack Cinci $2’s have just sold for $5.50/chip.

well now i gotta see it.
Don’t do it @TX_Golf_N_Poker You know what happened last time!
One of these days when I have 5-6 forever set all completed, I will sit down with my boys to find out which set each of them wants when I die. So the Dragonara's will definitely be in my will at some point in time.
No joke. About 3 months ago my 7 year old niece just straight up asked me if she could have my Shawshank Redemption set when I died…I lost it ha

Those are really nice. Are they brand spanking new in that photo? These are not oiled correct?
Not even a little bit new. These are used casino chips from the early 1970s. The dimes and quarters are excellent to near mint. The 1s and 5s are very good+.

Read through the whole thread. It's very interesting. Also the OPs photos are much better than mine.

This argument is idiotic. Broker? Please, give me a break. Those 2K chips they bought with the intent only to sell at a profit and prey on the hobbyists here could’ve been bought by other people trying to complete a set that they’ll actually enjoy and/or use. Flippers hurt the hobby - any collector hobby - and to think otherwise is to just bury your head in the sand.

100% agree. And I can't promise I won't do exactly the same thing. It's just not my intent going in. I'll have 10 playable sets after I get this one. Do I NEED 10 playable sets? Chances are several will be sold in the next year or so. At this moment I have no idea which ones.

Heh, I only have half that many playable sets. Like your mindset, I probably don't need all those 5 but....

I've lamented letting go of my only Paulson set earlier this year, so I've determined I will keep exactly one. This will be it.

Flippers set the “market price”. Without them we’d have no ceiling. They perform a valuable service by providing the price above which things “are too high”.
So we know the range that things CAN sell for so we can feel good when we have “priced our goods right” or “bought a bargain” or “got maximum dollar” or “I got ripped off” “whatever makes you feel good whatever side of the equation you are on.

I don't think that's accurate at all.

Jim is shrewd, he's been doing this for a long time. The chips are priced at a point where he can be assured he can liquidate a large volume of them quickly. Thus his prices are market prices for 100k+ chips. He could try marking up prices alot higher but then he'd be stuck with a shitload of inventory that would take alot longer to sell. The percentage limits and pricing is well thought out.

I don't begrudge flippers like I have in the past. It's not going away so I try to ignore it. People like to come up with all sorts of justification on why they bought a huge 2000 chip set (maximizing as many snappers, 1k and above denoms as possible) and then turn around in a day, week, month, year with some long winded BS classified ad justifying why they're selling. It would be nice if folks were straightforward and honest. Something like: "These are now worth way more than I paid and I'd like to cash in."

“Prey”? Yeah these poor people with the liquid to offer a premium price and get everything they want. You make it seem like hobbyists have no choice in the matter. I’m not mad at flippers or am I mad at those you can and offer to pay a premium.

Some of these Pr0n journey threads look like a lot of long time hobbyists sold off some sets and I wonder why they’d do that.

I’m not saying people can’t sell sets - I’m saying the bottom feeders that buy chips from Jim and sell at a big profit days later are just taking more affordable chips away from the rest of us. They aren’t adding value, they aren’t bringing anything to market, they just pump up the price opportunistic and benefit only themselves.

Krish buys rare sets or accumulates a set over time and wants to sell at a premium, that’s different. Krish didn’t buy them from someone selling wholesale to all of us en masse and the turn around immediately and try to gouge us. Big difference between well heeled collectors and flippers.

I want to be clear I’m not calling Krish’s sales threads. I’m just inferring that it’s most likely the sets sold to him were sold at a premium. I think there are some parallels with “flippers” and collectors. Sometimes it’s difficult to keep a set if the price being offered is too good to pass up.

I think that arguing about flipping is no different from arguing about politics or religion in that it does no good. Everyone has their opinion and no amount of discussion or argument is going to change another's opinion.
Yeah this is true. It’s a boring topic, really. I’ll go back to not contributing to this thread.
