Got lucky once finding some SR at our Binnys retailer in the Chicagoland area but have not been able to crack the code for 107

Can someone give me the crash course on Elijah Craig, I have tried a number of small batch store picks, and have small batch barrell proof. Are there different Barrell Proof options that I should be looking for? What about Toasted Barrell?

I did try the 18 and wasn’t overly impressed

Heaven Hill distillate. Core range now is Small Batch, Toasted Barrel, 12 year Barrel Proof and the 18 year. Sometimes they release older bottles. They also have a Small Batch Rye in a few states. They usually have a couple of distillery exclusive as well, the grenades.

Small batch 94 proof used to be 12 years old but they dropped the age statement a few years back. After that, they ramped up the amount of Barrel Proof produced, which still maintains the 12 year old statement. 3 releases per year, all slightly different but similar, all great imo. The Toasted Barrel, a Small Batch finished in a new toasted barrel, is said to be a special release but I'm not sure about that. It is oakier than the previous two. The 18 is only 90 proof and very oaky. Decent but expensive. They all share the same DNA which is a bit nuttier and less fruitier than Buffalo Trace (imo). All releases are worth trying imo, even the 18 (if one likes oak).

As far as the ECBP goes, as I mentioned, they are all good. Preference varies of each of the three yearly releases. For $60 a bottle, it is totally worth buying all the releases and see which ones you like the best. The older bottle styles Barrel Proofs are very sough after and command higher prices on the secondary. Those bottles were being launched while the Small Batch still had the 12yo statement.

Costco had New Riff as well. Costco bourbon buyer is doing a nice job.

Ok, I have seen several of you with bottles of WLW and Pappy 15. How in the hell did you obtain them? Just fork over the $$$$ secondary? Obviously, I really want to own a bottle of each at some point in my life. If I have to cough up the ridiculous $, I guess it is what it is. I don't believe that I will ever see either in any of our stores in town. But I can tell you that I will own a bottle of both at some point!!

I am up to 39 bottles, 31 of them are open. I am beginning to see that all I really want is BTAC and Old Forester. Maybe a nice bottle of 1792 on hand, a bottle of Woodford reserve for Derby day, and Bulliet Rye for a mixer. Short of a few grail bottles mentioned above, that'll do....for now :sneaky:

Family pic coming soon

(am I drinking bourbon in the AM? yes sir. Hey, at least it's my day off though right?.......)

1. You can totally luck out and walk into the right place at the right time. (This has never happened to me)

2. Shell out the $ on a secondary market

3. Build a relationship with a store manager and spend probably 5X or more secondary cost of the bottle over the course of a year on various other bottles which you also get to consume. But now you’re recognized as a loyal customer and when it comes in next year they may set a bottle aside for you.

So depending on how quickly you want something, I’ve had success with option 2 or 3 for pappy15 or WLW. I always offer my store connection a pour so he knows I’m not flipping it.

Speaking of secondary markets, can anyone pm me an invite? I used to be somewhat active on BSM before they got shut down, but haven’t joined anything since. I’d like to get back into a group since covid has put a big dent in my bunker.

I'm working on #3. It's still expensive, but at least I'm building a good inventory. :ROFLMAO:

PM me your FB acct.

Option #3 got me my bottles of Blantons this year. Lady told me she got one pick to skip the list and I happened to be it.

So maybe you can sweet talk your way in with a worker. :)

Looks like the latest batch is 2020-02 Boston.
Possible that 2020-01 Granny is the one on the shelf, but I doubt it.
Distiller.com looks favorably on both bottles.

This any good? I'm assuming it's the newest Booker's. Anybody try the newest release yet?

While I'm probably not the guy to ask, I just got a bottle. I find that I don't really care for Booker's (especially for $80), That said, it makes for a nice change of pace bourbon in my collection. I will drink that one and the Little Book occasionally. I will also likely never buy either again.

I thought it was priced a tad high at $60 here, but considering selection is so small and how good it is... totally worth it
I just grabbed one at Costco for $42 here the other day, hard to beat for the price. It’s usually on shelves for $45-50 here if you ever want me to throw one in with some chips for ya haha

Stagg #14 this year
You’ve found 14 bottles of Stagg this year?!?!? Would love to do a sample trade to try that Stagg and Full proof, I’ve got a couple 4R LEs now and some other good stuff.

Also, that foursquare 2008 is mind blowingly good. Made me rethink everything about rum, probably top 5 bottles of any brown liquid I’ve tasted all year.

14 bottles of Stagg on the wall 14 bottles of Stagg.........

Is that not the 14th Stagg? As opposed to the 13th and prior 12th?

I am currently enjoying thoroughly some EH Taylor small batch. NOT the best on the nose but also not terrible, (weller kinda rules the nose end of things but lacks on the finish usually); however, this delivers on flavor. Soo nice. Slightly nutty caramel graham? lol, makes sense to me. I need to be careful as I only have a half bottle left!

I've been lucky enough to find this here recently. I have 4 bottles now.

Pm me, maybe we can work something out. I'm insanely busy this week so I might not be able to respond quick.

The foursquare is known as the pappy of rum, but I'd didnt live up to the hype for me. Good stuff but wasn't life changing like gts was for me.

I don't mind sharing tips with you guys. I could write a book on what I've learned this year. Here are my key take aways.

1) working from home/having flexibility is extremely important (when I go back to the office full time I'm fucked) 2 stores in Atlanta got Weller full proof picks today, both sold out in less than 30 minutes.

2) network network network. Find people in your area that hunt hard and share tips with them in exchange they should give you tips. See number 1. The full proofs never hit our local Facebook group and still sold out instantly. One person text some friends who text some friends who text more friends.

3) visit the same store or stores as often as possible and chit chat with the manager. You want them to know your name when you walk in and have you on speed dial. Show them love buying bottles off the shelf when you can.

3b) give store owners samples or crack bottles with them if they allow it

3c) probably my biggest secret. Shop for friends. I've spent nearly 25k in 4 months and only a small percentage of that was for me. If my friends are looking for something and don't have the time I'll get it for them and they pay me. It gets clout/points with the store and looks like I'm supporting them and I'm hooking a friend up at the same time

4) ask for things months or a month in advance. If it's already out it's too late. Their holding it in back for crazy people like me. I was buttering stores up for Stagg 2 months before it came out so they knew I was dying to get one.

5) keys I try to let every store owner know. I'm a drinker not a flipper. I have a shit ton of bottles and I'm always looking for something new. I've tried mostly every thing. This puts in their head your the person for rare shit and that you arent trying to screw them. I always say shit like "Id rather you make money than a flipper on the secondary so I'm willing to pay up for certain things"

I could go on, but these are the outlines of what has worked best for me. Happy to answer any questions.

Today's score. 55 bucks a pop for store picks. Each store had a limit of 2.

And another 14
