Official PCF Whisk(e)y Thread (54 Viewers)

Last night as part of a monthly tournament, we did a single malt tasting trying to keep the price around $60 per bottle.
This is what we tasted;

Glengrant (Speyside) 16yr
Grangestone (Highland) 18yr
Auchentoshan (Lowland) Triple Wood
Talisker Storm (Islay)

Personally, I think the first 3 are all good single malts, with the Grangestone being my favorite. I can do without the Talisker.

Glen Grant (two words) is a fine whisky, indeed. Some of the older vintage bottling are superb. At $60, the 16-yr. is an excellent buy.

Grangestone is not a distillery. It's a brand owned by Grant's, generally thought to be excess production from the several distilleries they own. But there's no guarantee that any Grangestone bottling will continue to be available, or have any consistency from batch to batch. The sole seller of Grangestone in the US is Total Wine.

Auchentoshan is a nice aperitif whisky.

Some of us love pretty much anything Talisker produces, even the Storm.

At our hotel's bar in Dijon this week, we came across a couple of "French" single malt "scotches we'd never had before. The older of the two was a dead ringer for Macallan 12.

Now if you want controversy, just bring up Loch Dhu, the "Black Whisky." Is it even still being produced?

I don't know how they got the Storm so wrong. I love Talisker, but the Storm was not great IMO.

Glad to hear it's not just me! I was at an event called the "Whiskey Classic" here in Vancouver, where I got to sample a bunch of different whiskies ... there was oohing and aahing about Talisker Storm but I was unimpressed.

Not trying to bring politics to a friendly thread, but I think regardless of how we'll vote in a couple weeks, we can agree that the cocktail menu at Trump's newest hotel contains a shameful abomination of a drink.

I like the price on "The Benjamin", but I'd never order anything on that page.

The occupational title of "mixologist" seems awfully bogus to me. I was a mixologist when I was about ten years old...

A crime against Scotland. And WTF is "Santory" japanese whiskey? Copy edit much?

And the Benjamin signature drink sounds like what Trump's frat brah sons throw up.

On the other hand, "Silence Dogood" is, still, a kick-ass name. Dollars to donuts not a single Trump has any idea whose pen name that is.

Not "a Trump supporter"..."a Trump." Donnie, Donnie, Jr, Ivanka, Eric, none of them prolly know.

Since the name of the Lounge is "Benjamin Bar and Lounge", and there's also a drink called the Postmaster General, I'm guessing it's not a happy co-incidence.

Never underestimate the enemy.

True, but I sincerely doubt they had any input into that and even if they did, would not draw the connection.

Usually i make big scores on offer up or craigslist. This score was sitting at the back of my liquor cabinet. Had no clue how much it was worth. Almost used the Old Weller(1977) for some Jack and Cokes! Yikes!!

Question for all of you scotch drinkers. If you were to receive a mid priced bottle of scotch what would it be? Thanks I am looking for a friend that drinks it and I have no idea.

Do you know what Scotches he already has? And what's "mid-priced" -- $50-75?

It's almost impossible to buy someone a gift in an area in which he already collects. Imagine him trying to buy you a mid-priced set of poker chips.

He doesn't collect and that is the price I had in mind. What would you like to receive as a gift?
Without knowing his favored whiskies, I'd try for something middle of the road in that pricerange, like a Springbank or Highland Park. With a slight bit of peat, I'd suggest Oban. Balvenie is a safe option too.

You're asking the wrong guy. The things I'd like would be very, very difficult to find.

But unless he's a serious Scotch drinker, you'd best avoid any of the peatier or island whiskies. I'd also avoid the 10-year-old (or younger) bottlings.

Universally recommended middle-of-the-road whiskies that suit mosts tastes are generally sherry-aged, so the obvious choices would be Macallan 12, Balvenie Doublewood, Knockando, Highland Park, Glen Scotia, and Longmorn. The Springbanks are terrific, but they're likely to be above your price range.

Hope you get to taste whatever you select!
