They're all fantastic, IMO. Once you get through them, it's on to Buffalo Trace's "Single Oak Project" -- 192 different bottlings.

See http://www.drinkhacker.com/2015/08/28/buffalo-trace-single-oak-project-every-barrel-reviewed-on-one-page/

If you ever get down to DC, The Partisan bar has most of them. If you ever run across them in Baltimore, please let me know where...

Speaking of recommendations.... I'm partial to a bit of Laophraig (Islay single malt, smells of Germolene). I'm looking to try other Islay malts and i was wondering if anyone could talk the following in order of which I should try first? I'm assuming I can't get these in local bars/pubs so I'll have to buy a bottle (shame, eh?)...

Bowmore 12
Lagavulin 16
Ardmore
Any others...?

Lagavulin first, then Bowmore, ardberg, and I would throw Bunnahabhain into the mix.

Lagavulin is my favorite Scotch hands down. I just recently started drinking Bowmore and love it, we cracked a bottle of the 18 open at the holiday game last week and it was way better than the 12 I have around the house.

I usually drink Elijah Craig. At the price point its one of my favorite drinks. Around here its about 30 bucks a bottle. I think I want to up my price point to the 50-75 dollar range. My oldest daughter is coming over on Christmas. We enjoy having a bourbon or two together. I'd like to share something nice with her. Any suggestions? I know everyone has something different. That's fine. Let me hear them.

Thanks,

B

They are getting harder to find but Four Roses store select Single Barrels can be had for around $75-$90. I'm a big fan of the OBSK recipe which is a high rye mash bill that has some spiciness that I like. You can see what the other recipes flavor profiles are here. The store select bottles will be easier to identify as they will all be barrel proof, not 100 proof which is what the standard FR Single Barrel will be. Pick up some of the Small Batch too if you've never had it.

The $50-$75 price range is not very interesting in my opinion. You would be better off sticking with the mid shelf stuff until you hit around the $100-$150 mark but most of that stuff is hard to find. Try Henry McKenna 10yr, Four Roses Small Batch, or Russel's Reserve 10yr for some nice mid shelf options.

Thanks........Maybe I'll just stick with Elijah Craig for now. I know I like that.

I agree about Four Roses. I was looking for something a little different. Maybe I'll just go browse and see what catches my eye. My bourbon guy is on vacation. I'm usually texting him from the whiskey isle lol.

I'm an Ardbeg guy -- the 1974 18 yr. is one of the best things I've ever tasted. The 1978 onward dropped down in complexity just a hair... Plus my wife usually won't drink the Islays, so I don't have to compete for them.

Agrred on the excellence of Bowmore 15 and 18. I once tasted the incredible Black Bowmore, at 45 yrs age. There's now a "last cask" 50-year bottling out. If you're ever offered a shot for under $100, you're getting a bargain -- and it's worth the experience, unlike so many very old, tired, over-sherried whiskies.

Two that I would suggest if you haven't tried them yet are Blanton's and Noahs mill both have been mentioned several times ITT. Blanton's will be similar to Elijah IMO, but slightly smoother. Noah's mill is a higher proof, so it will be a different experience. Another good one if you haven't tried it is Angels envy. You also might look for some orphan barrel options that tend to be around the $70-$100 range depending.

Elijah is still a great option especially for its price point, when we discovered it about ten years ago you could the 1.75 L for around $36 here. It's well over $50 now

EC is 30 bucks a bottle here :) Funny you mention Blanton. My brother n law brought me a bottle of it over the summer. It was fantastic. I don't see it for sale around here very often. I've tasted Noah Mills and really liked it. I will look for it. Again, I don't think I see it around here very often. I've had exactly one glass of one of the Orphan Barrel bourbons.......WOW......It was one of the first bourbons I had ever tried. At this point that is slightly out of my price range.

I'm off tomorrow. I think I'll hit up the store and see what they have. I might PM you from the bourbon isle for some thoughts lol (Usually I'm texting @ChaosRock , but he is in Florida right now with the family).

Thanks for the suggestions.

My Christmas gift from guy I work with.

Hmm, when we were discussing Balvenies earlier, I forgot to mention this one. We don't generally like rum-finished whisky, but the Caribbean Cask has become a favorite over the past two years. Hope you enjoy it!

I ended up getting a bottle of EC. Figured I'd stay with one of my favorites for the holidays

I have a bottle of Laophraig sitting under the tree calling my name. Once it's finished I'll try a bottle of the Lagavulin (I can't buy it beforehand, or it'll feel like I'm being unfaithful).

Without knowing his favored whiskies, I'd try for something middle of the road in that pricerange, like a Springbank or Highland Park. With a slight bit of peat, I'd suggest Oban. Balvenie is a safe option too.

Oban is one of my favourites. A lovely flavour.

It makes me sad more people don't know about Master of Malt. This is your friend: https://www.masterofmalt.com/tasting-set/islay-whisky-tasting-set/

But, for those Lagavulin, Bowmore, Ardmore. I'd also throw in Oban and Caol Ila. Both exceptional in my opinion.

Variety is the spice of life :D

It's the most visited site on my browser. The tasters are amazing. Although because they're only by the dram I'm often upset when I find a winner as I know I'll have to wait for the bottle to arrive before I can enjoy it again.

If anyone local wants a bottle of Bowmore, give me a shout. I took a taste and don't care for it.

I had the misfortune of being introduced to scotch, whiskey in general, by a customer. "Try this", he says. One sip of Macallan 18 and now I'm ruined. A scotch snob in less than a minute! The Bowmore is fine, I'm sure, but not my taste. The Macallan was $170 at the time. I stalled about getting myself a bottle for my birthday. A few month later it was $220. That just crazy to me, so I'm parched!

Glenlivet 18 is nice and a lot less expensive.

Bourbon:

Blantons
Basil Hayden
Bookers was too much for me, but I'm a lightweight
Woodford I like as well

Macallan is probably the most highly sherried of all Scotches. With a similar taste profile, you might try a Glenfarclas, Aberlour A'Bunadh, or Springbank 12 (and up) instead. Or the Balvenie Doublewood.

Thanks! I'll definitely try those out.

The Macallan 12 and 15 didn't suit me. I'm not a snob. It's more that I don't like a strong alcohol taste, so the sherrie probably smoothes that out. I think our store has Balvenie.
