Jim Murray everyone!

In the Whisky Bible 2021, which was released today, Murray writes that Alberta Premium Cask Strength Rye has a delivery that “should be exhibited at the Museum of Canada because even the smallest mouthful simply ejaculates the most rampant toasty rye notes known to mankind.”

“...Exceptional mouthfeel.”

I can’t have more than a taste. I can drink Laga and Ardbeg until the cows come home, but Octomore is like *sip*, done.

My experience with Octomore is little different than yours. Yes, it's heavily peated but it does not feel to me it taste more peated than say an Ardbeg 10. Maybe it is the combination of the peat and the cask strength which is telling you 'sip' and done.

What surprises about Octomore is how they can overcome their youth and taste refined flavor-wise. Yes, it is high proof and it will scare you away depending on the size of your sip but still, does not taste like young whisky.

I agree with you that it does not taste young even though it’s only a 5 year. I drank the 11.1 which is said to be less heavily peated than the previous expressions. I haven’t tried the others so have no basis of comparison, but it’s just barely more peaty than ardbeg. More than the peat though, I found it very sweet and citrus.

Same page here, especially the .1s as they don't have any wine finish. I side-by-sided Ardbeg 10 and the 08.1 many times as they were opened at the same time and, although not fair given the difference in ABV, the Octo surpassed the Beg every time. More fruit and a little less bitterness. Peat-wise, just a fraction more as far as taste goes.

I still like the ardbeg ugaildail better but I do like the octo more than corryvecken

Ok, ok, ok. It’s been ages since I tried an Octomore, and when I did, it was the super peat-bombs. So maybe I need to give the newer ones a go.

I am a fan of small drams of Corry.

Have you tried oogey? People usually prefer one over the other. I’m in the oogey camp

The 11.3, which is even heavier peated than the 11.1, is absolutely phenomenal. Even with the high ABV and PPM, is far smoother than the Arbeg 10yr or the Lagavulin 16yr that I have.

The .3s tend to be my favorites of the yearly releases but I wouldn't discard any in the series, really.

Just to make sure, Elliot, I was only providing a different vantage point. Taste/preference is certainly subjective and there is no right or wrong here. All the personal experiences are what they are.

Can anyone tell me that pappy 23 is really that good? I have never had it. I don’t want to be a hater but I know paulsons are different then BCC then other chips but is the 23 year so good that it deserves the price? Side note I have never tried it...

Never tried any pappys but many say that the 20 is superior to the 23. I’ve owned lot b’s and orvw but traded them all for whiskeys

worth their price

Humblebrag...I bought the Taketsuru 21 and two Hibiki 17 at NRT for ¥6,000 each. Last bottle of the Hibiki is almost gone. :( Can't bring myself to open the Taketsuru yet.

Let me make it worthwhile in trade for nonconsumable goods ie:chips

I’m also out of hibiki 12 and 17. One of my bottles was a lion crest too. Pre 2001. All I have left are 5 mini hibiki 17s left. Even those minis sell for $100+ each

Congrats on the giveaway win! Seems like you really enjoyed it
Got my wife to assist in setting up a double blind tasting of these - correctly nailed the full lineup, and got to educate her some on bourbon as she tasted alongside. The WLW stood out like crazy, first time trying it and I understand the hype. Thanks @joeyshin

I didn’t want to say anything to spoil it but the full proof shined against the SR, A107, and 12. But the WLW is in another league. The others are barely in the shadow of the WLW (courtesy of @pacmartine)

Got a tasting box from flaviar...all American single malts.
Westward
Few
Santa Fe Spirits: Colkegan

Didn't care for the Few...was almost yeasty in its initial flavor. Colkegan was the favorite. A bit of fruit up front with a nice smoky finish.

So I’ve only had two bottles of Woodford Reserve—one standard and one a store pick from a boutique upscale grocer around here. I wasn’t impressed with either bottle...until I got down to the last 6oz or so. I loved the last 6oz from both bottles.

I figured that I had to try the Double Oaked that so many like. I hope I don’t hate the first 19oz.

Cheers!

Had to compare...for science!

The Woodford Double Oaked is sweeter. More marshmallow.

The EC Toasted Barrel is a bit more citrus and pepper. You still get the toasted marshmallow, but it’s a little more subtle. And I do notice the bit higher proof. I don’t get the nuttiness that is usually in EC.

Both are very good. If I were to introduce Bourbon to a newbie, it would either be Eagle Rare or this Woodford Double Oaked.
