Here’s a unique one for the bourbon nerds: a 24-year-old barreled shortly before the Heaven Hill fire of ‘96. Matured in Scotland and a few got shipped back to the states. Just landed ... can’t wait to tap into this pre-fire goodness!

You mean, travel back in time to 1994, set up shop in Kentucky, and distill your own bourbon? Call me a customer!

edit: for those who are interested, the use of “Undisclosed” is how independent bottlers are able to bring special casks to market. Contracts state the bottler may not use the distiller’s name on the label for obvious reasons. While some distillers strictly enforce it (think famous Islay scotches), most others such as HH are primarily concerned with the risk of marketing confusion versus actually protecting the source of the juice. This allows reputable bottlers the freedom to share distilling details as long as the actual name isn’t used.

$250 and $500. Something like that. Taketsuru 21 and 17 I think is what it was. They looked nice on the shelf behind the counter.
Oh okay. That’s too much. If you grab 1 or 2 nikka straight from the barrel for me I’d pay $$ Or trade for some chips

Anyone live in DC

1 west DuPont wines and liquor has several bottles of Nikka 21. Their in store price is $899 but it’s listed at msrp on instacart $229. Worth a shot to have it delivered by instacart at $229

get two and I’ll take one, or both, off your hands

The 12 is great. But I wouldn’t pay over retail for it.
+1
Has anyone ever tried the Knob Creek 12yr? I recently got into the 9 yr, heard great things about the 12yr, and disappointing words regarding the 15yr.
i landed on the single barrel select 9yr 120 proof (for my preference). I've had the 12yr, and the single barrel select 9yr, 12yr, and15 yr. The 12yr, SBS 12 yr and 15yr all leave me mouth too dry imo.. i dont know why, maybe the oak tannins? I keep going back to the 9yr 120 proof SBS though

OK, this is our first run through, going to do a second before I rank them and guess

A. Nose: young banana, little bit of caramel, apple, wood funk, smoke/char?
Palate: Caramel, apple, wood/char but not over-powering
Finish: Long and woody, lingers

Actually, just shoot me your address and i'll send you some samples. I dont have the straight 15yr, but after tasting both the SBS 12yr and the straight 12yr, i dont find too much of a difference, so the SBS 15yr should give you a good idea of how the other 15yr is.

B. Nose: sweet chocolate, caramel, grape, granny smith apples, and some floral notes in there
Palate: caramel, apple, more proof.....not much here on first pass
Finish: what finish? hope to get more on the 2nd pass

C. Nose: cleaning products, apple, banana, chocolate covered cherries, bubble gum, that whack and unwrap chocolate orange candy thing, some lemon peel
Palate: whack and unwrap chocolate orange, dark chocolate, high proof, red fruit, cherry
Finish: Long chocolate finish

D. WOW!
Nose: Sweet berries, CANDY like Runts or sweet tarts, plums, sour plum skin, a little caramel, very unique
Palate: nose goes straight to palate, then gives way to some age and woodiness, high proof ( think the proof went in order A to D), extremely complex
Finish: LONG, sweet age wood, very pleasant with some chocolate at the end

Like I said, WOW

First, THANKS @Saoliver for the blind war. This is my first time blinding whiskey and it was extremely difficult! I am going to FUCK IT UP!! Sorry I fucked up the timing and we didn't drink together!!

OK! Ran it a second time. I swear I switched A and B second time through, but I might be torturing myself here...

I will give them up one at a time:

4th place: A
proof: 100
Distillery: Jim Beam
Price: $60
Bottle: Knob Creek Single Barrel Store Pick (second choice is 12 year)

I had this in 3rd place first time through, but like I said...I might have switched them accidently

I will do the last 2 together, since you can conclude what got first place based on my 2nd place pick.

2nd place: C
proof: 130
Distillery: Buffalo Trace
Price: $75
Bottle: Colonel E.H. Taylor Barrel Proof

1st place: D
proof: 115
Distillery: ??
Price: $100+
Bottle: NO CLUE - I have NEVER had anything like it. Not to say that it fits a classical bourbon profile, certainly not, but it is the most unique complex whiskey I have ever tasted.

Well, Jim...

C is correct, but I paid WELL north of $75. But it is worth it.

Some clues:

A is from a distiller that is often called “nutty,” but not Beam.

You will never guess B, but you are close on proof. It’s 107.

D is not a Bourbon. And the proof is deceptively higher.
