Keep telling myself that I'm spending too much money on whiskey lately but my neighbor keeps giving me first dibs on the good swill...

Swill huh? Neighbor huh? We both live in OR....I could move to the house on the other side of your neighbor. Just trying to help man!!

@Saoliver

What do you think of the EHT Straight Rye? It is one of my few preferred ryes, likely for the wrong reasons though.

edit: NOT the wrong reasons. This thing has it all (or most of it, lol) imo. Oily - good mouth feel, still get those dessert and fruit notes just like the bourbon - cherry, chocolate etc. However, the finish is a bit of a disappointment to me. Ends too damn quickly. Buy again = YES for me.

The nose is woody. Orange peel. Maybe leather. Not a fan.

However...

Palette is caramel, floral, rye spice, hint of butterscotch.

Finish is spicy and sweet. And long.

I hate the nose. But I’d drink it!

I’m about to have this right now. The nose is incredible! @Pinkdan sent me some really good ryes.

I am disgusted with myself. Everything you just said about the EHT SR is CORRECT. Nose: woody, orange peel, and yes leather...usually equals unpleasant.

Finishing up this pour, palate is agreed notably better, and the finish has lasted longer as I got through the pour.

I heard that JD is the shiznizzel

The JD is the best of the lot. Not even close.

Nose is incredible. I don’t smell a hint of rye. I smell raisin oatmeal cookies. And vanilla. You get a sense of proof through all of the sweet. A hint of mint.

The palette though is spice from start to finish. Thick and syrupy. Spice and brown sugar.

The finish is cinnamon and mint. A bit of citrus. But spice all the way through. The first sip wasn’t a true rye spice. It’s more like a full proof Bourbon. But on subsequent sips, I get more rye spice and less mint.

It is really good.

Ok, I did not realize that Noah's Mill and Rowan's Creek were Willett. I thought I owned ZERO Willett. That said I lean toward Noah's, it is just plain better imo. Can you guys tell me which Willet is the BEST? I would like to try more that are not so nutty and cinnamony which is a word I may have just made up. --- edit: My wife corrected me, the correct descriptor is Red Hots (the candy)

Also, I saw several Joseph Magnus bourbons on the shelf the other day....which one do I buy? THANKS WHISKEY BRO BRO's!!
Besides the 4yo rye, I like Old Bardstown Estate Bottled.

Willet is a hard one to pin down, Jim.

The Willet Family Estate bottling (white labels) are supposed to the best of the bunch, including bourbons and ryes. There's less and less of those (specially bourbons) released. They go for a lot of money on the secondary. The bourbons were all sourced from several distilleries (MGP, HH and others). Tons of variance. The Ryes are now their own distillate but the older ones, MGP. The 4yo is good.

Willet wasn't distilling, they started back in 2012. They have slowly either mixing in more of their own product or straight up bottling 100% of it. The Old Bardstown is all Willet distillate. Noah's Mill and Rowan's and the other non-WFE have been rumored to be now their own distillate as well (and the tags say so). I have not tried the new stuff. My bottles of Noah's are from 2015, wax top. I like them. Most prefer the older bottling but tastes are different, obviously. And that does not mean they won't improve. If my mind serves me right, they do pot still distilling.

So again, hard to pin down as they do not provide much info.

I said "good swill"!

The EHT small batch is one of my favorites, so I jumped at the chance for a single barrel. Didn't get to crack it last night, but I'm looking forward to comparing the two.

This makes for 5 back ups of Weller SR, but seriously at $26 I have a hard time not grabbing it off the shelf.
While I will not be purchasing Larceny again, I have to try the barrel proof!

Also, I found the "first N" today! With the help of @Saoliver 's "B" I will finally have all the horsey corks! Great, now what the fuck am I going to do with myself?!

I'm always looking for the Larceny Barrel Proof. Why will you not be buying the Larceny again? I just opened the Larceny small batch, and I liked it.

Just don't LOVE it. There are just too many others I prefer over Larceny. Same with Russel's Reserve. Both are good whiskeys but I am not buying them again (unless I love the Barrel Proof that is!!)

I suppose if I was able to find the stuff you have been finding at retail then I would probably do the same lol

I'm a big fan of Larceny now too. I never like the neck pour, but after it is open it always seems to get better. Solid pour for the price

Agreed, not fantastic but very solid, I can get Larceny for $25 a bottle, one of the better values in my cabinet. Haven't been able to snag a barrel proof yet.
