Great way to finish the weekend

A bunch of 1792s are about to come up in the VA ABC lottery. I wonder if they are worth throwing my hat in for trades:

1792 Sweet Wheat Bourbon ($39.99)
1792 Aged 12 Year Bourbon ($49.99)
Weller Single Barrel ($49.99)

Weller Single Barrel for sure. And I'll trade you if you win and don't want it. I need that one and the CYPB to complete my Weller collection.

Shelf has a couple of these hanging out too

Msrp $500? What the what ?!

The Barrell Gold Label is tasty whiskey. Personally, I passed on buying it...and bought the Seagrass 16 for half the price. I was more impressed by the Seagrass Gray Label, but that's just me. Taste and value are both subjective beasts! Curious to hear your thoughts if you end up trying a pour of the Barrell Gold.

I did not. Couldnt get past its price tag, which at retail even, was insanity to me.

Hopefully I can try it at some point, but will unlikely ever buy.

I've only recently made my peace with 3 digit retail costs that didn't start with a 1, and reserve it for only things that I am confidant I'm going to enjoy or some other real justification that I can make to myself several days in a row of why I should buy it. I haven't talked myself into anything that didn't start with a 2. $500 on NAS bourbon... no, just no. Diminishing returns is one thing, but at some point, that doesn't really make sense.

It's not bearing an age-statement on the front label, but it is a 16 year product (blend of 16 and 17 year liquid). Not that it should change your purchasing at all just because it has that going for it. I've tried it--and like it--and still chose not to buy it!

I've spent $300 a few times (EHT Barrel Proof, Willett 6yr purple top) and $400 once (George T Stagg). I did go for the Barrell 16yr Seagrass at $250. Most Barrell offerings aren't worth the money. The 16yr Seagrass might not be worth the money, but I had to know.

Absolutely the Single Barrel. That Weller bottle is the absolute hardest to find, and when you do, the secondary is 800-900.

For the entire collection, the 12yr is still my favorite.

Anyone near any Hirsch 6 years? I’m looking for more. Each store got their own barrell so I’d like a variety.

I’ll trade bottles, chips, $$$ or combination.

Doing them one at a time seems best so here goes 12.2. I’ll a:b:c when I’ve given them each a time to shine.

No where near as peat forward as I expected. Very sweet smell. Very fruit but not that sherry fruit smell, just smells like cut up fruit. Don’t get any alcohol smell at all. You can cram your nose full in the glass and it doesn’t singe the nose at all.

Taste, the peat and the heat shows up. Sweet, smoke, fruit. So many things going on but not fighting each other. Second sip those oak tannins show up and the tongue puckers a bit.

I put it down for 10 minutes and it really changes. Now the smell has more alcohol and almost a sour smell. Starts to singe the nose hairs. Taste, some of the smoke is gone. Fruit and sweet remains.

Drop of water on the last half of glass softens things. Most of the smoke leaves. But more sour on the palette.

Finish is salty and sweet.

So far I prefer 12.1. Probably try the 12.3 this weekend.

Totally forgot, but a friend passed me some coffee rested in used Ardbeg barrels. It is actually a pretty light roast which isn't normally my thing. It doesn't smell any different or even taste any different. But if I take a drink of it, swallow and wait about 90 seconds, my mouth does this thing where it goes 'are we drinking ardbeg?' I don't know how to describe it better than that, but if you drink Ardbeg you are probably familiar with that feeling of almost like a sooty mouth after a while. It's almost like that, but I feel like I'm butchering it. It's just... strange/good/odd/weird?
