But I don’t wanna spend 200 and something I don’t really know. There’s a lot of bad Japanese whiskey coming out nowadays to
super easy to lie about as it has such a wishy washy definition

I have my eye on a bottle from a distillery I like quite a bit that is finished in calvados barrels which I also like, but it's a lot of money to spend on, 'I hope I like this.'

Question for all the whiskey collectors/enjoyers here: where do y’all buy this stuff?

Sorry if this has already been covered somewhere in the thread but I live in the Boston area and compared to my friends in NY, CA, and CO I’ve struggled to find a good liquor store with real variety. I know some people order a lot but the options for delivery to MA are really limited.

Suggestions?

Most of mine are from local stores. We don’t have state run stores, but our prices are higher.

I will also buy online from stores out of CA. Not sure if MA allows that.

Keep looking for a "local". Sometimes it takes a while to find some good stores, but its worth the hunt. Anytime you pass by a new store (on the way home from work, family trip, while you're in the next town for your kid's sporting event, etc.) stop in and check it out. Sometimes the shittiest looking hole in the wall is a hidden gem. I have 4 or 5 different local stores I've settled on for most of my purchases, but it took stopping in at probably 100+ different places to find them.

I do a combination of what others have posted above, like if I'm traveling out of state I just stop off at random liquor stores to see what they have, and also I have companies that ship to me. Domestic shipping is kinda a crap shoot, some places will ship to VA, some won't, some did but won't anymore. I have much more success with international actually, but my interested are in Irish and Scotch mostly, so they are coming from overseas anyways. Buying bourbon from overseas would be pretty rough.

I had a good (not great) local store before we moved (about 45 min away now) that consistently had stuff but for instance I’ve been trying to find the rarer runs from stuff like Angel’s Envy, Willet, Wild Turkey, etc and the stores around me just don’t have it.

Out in San Francisco for instance my brother showed me an importer/distributor that will sell to the home market (https://m.klwines.com/) but they won’t ship to MA and when I lived in NY my go-to was Astor.

I’m looking for somewhere that can be where I get 90% of my spirits and just failing
