I have no earthly idea why, but I was craving a taste of Scotch for my after dinner pour. Since I only have one bottle in the cabinet, it was a pretty easy choice. View attachment 1064291This is decent and I’m enjoying this a little more than I usually would, but I have to imagine there’s much better available that suits my tastes. It’s just a rabbit hole I don’t care to go down lol
I don't have any scotch yet either, but I feel like I ought to have at least one or two bottles just because why not... I'm thinking of getting the Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban 14 year. It's the 10 year that you have here, then aged an additional 4 years in Port casks. My son brought a bottle to the house at Christmas and it was very tasty. Online reviews are good too.

I believe their next bottle up is the La Santa (red label), which for like $55-60 is IMHO a really solid bottle.

One of my cash game regs brought a bottle of their Nectar D’Or one night. I thought it was very good. He’s also the same person that gifted me that bottle of 10yr that I have. I think he did that so there’s at least something at my house that he likes. He’s not much for bourbon…especially the proof bombs I prefer lol

A nice windchill approaching single digits has me reaching for the gasoline

Our game is 3/4 full of whiskey aficionados and we made a rule that the first person to rebuy in needs to supply the next game with a min $60 bottle (no peat) since a few of them can’t handle it.
Sounds good! How do I get an invite next time I pass through? I have family in St. Louis and Sikeston, MO. I'll bring something good.

Agreed but I can’t complain since I was able to take home half a bottle of Uigeadail that everyone else tapped out on. The same group will polish off a store pick Eagle Rare and rave about it.

I’ll PM you once I am granted the super powers of doing so and we might be able to get something put together. If not our game, maybe we can get a PCF meet up at one of the local cigar lounges with any other local members.

Could use some suggestions-

Was looking to expand my bourbon horizons and found the local ABC selections limited and or daunting (lots of choices with meh reviews).

I’ve come to enjoy Jefferson’s Aged at Sea & Widdow Jane 10.

When I asked the guy at the store, it was was clear he didn’t know bourbons and just went with what they sell more of.

Thoughts on what to try next? Willing to spend a bit more, if needed.

I don’t mind sticking with those, but I’ve found this is an interesting space and would like to explore.

Obviously, you’re not tracking the local ABC options, but curious what jumps to mind. If it’s easier to share options, I can.

Where are you? Which ABC website should I scour?

Widow Jane 10 gets great reviews, and is an approachable lower proof.

What else is there?

My best advice is try any store picks that they offer. For standard offerings, try Old Forester 1897 and 1920 if they have them. Both are fantastic.

Ummm... OF 1910 is fantastic too. My personal favorite of the three.

@warma Not sure exactly where you are on this journey. I've been a craft beer guy for over 20 years and just started experiencing whiskey the past six months. I went kinda crazy and bought 15-20 different bottles within a couple of months. I chased after the proof bombs that everyone here loves, but I've found for sipping that I'm not really ready for most of those. 130 proof and up is just too hot for me to really enjoy neat. My personal sweet spot is the low 90s up to about 110. I also make cocktails and like OF 100 Rye and Wild Turkey 101 Rye for Old Fashioneds, Manhattans, and Sazeracs. I'll also mix these with my higher proof Ryes too like Sagamore and Alberta Premium once in a while.

This thread has been a fantastic education for me. After spending several months here, I've come to recognize the bottles that people here enjoy. So when I'm in a store, I'm able to quickly determine between the ordinary and the better than average. There are some names that you will never go wrong with. Old Forester, Elijah Craig, Willet, and most everything under the Buffalo Trace name. Literally nothing any of them produces is going to be a bad choice.

As I spent time in this thread, I've compiled two lists. One with all the allocated and rare bottles that I would buy instantly if I see them in a store at near retail price. I've been lucky and have stumbled on to a few of these. Then a second list with the more common stuff that I want to try. I'm working through that list one bottle at a time. My cabinet is pretty full at the moment, so I'm not seeking out anything new right now. Need to kill a few bottles first.

Not sure if any of this helps your situation. One thing I have done when I've been in a store and wondered about a particular bottle is post a pic in this thread. Seems like there are enough guys here who monitor that I often get an answer or two within minutes. Good luck!

Care to share your lists?

One more thing, @warma. Maybe try a few 50ml bottles or pints. There are some higher quality "budget" bourbons that you can find in smaller bottles. Try them. If you like the profile, then maybe invest in a 750ml of that bottle, or look for the more premium offerings from that brand. Some examples below:

Larceny
Maker's Mark
Buffalo Trace
Elijah Craig
Woodford Reserve
Wild Turkey 101
Four Roses Small Batch or Small Batch Select
Evan Williams

The big box stores around me offer all of these.
