So what do you suggest? This was sweet and smooth and easy to drink, but didn't have much character. There was nothing wrong with it, but it's not anything I would go out of my way to drink. The guy who brought it said it was $40. Off the top of my head I can think of 10 bottles at that price or less that are considerably better. Bourbons and Ryes.
proper no 12 is missing a lot of the traditional irish characteristics

irish is normally vanilla, butter, sweet, light, not a ton of body. something that is frequently associated with irish whiskey is 'short bread cookies'

a lot of irish is also defined by pot still which has a distinct flavor that you'll notice pretty quickly as soon as you have it a few times, it's kinda peppery, but not peppery.

green spot, redbreast 12, powers are all good examples

Not Proper 12. That whiskey is garbage. I had one pour and dumped the bottle down the sink.

I’m even more of an noob in this area, but diving into some interesting selections has shown me there’s more to it that I thought. It’s a different profile, for certain, and it’s also evolving, with distillers starting to push beyond the traditional profile.

I’d also add Teeling Single Grain to the list.

mostly corn, column still, cab barrels? Nothing against Teeling Single Grain, but not what I'd point someone at who was trying to sample irish whiskey.

Yes. I think I mentioned in an earlier conversation (couple weeks ago?) here in this thread that I had tasted two different Teeling products and enjoyed them. Thanks for reminding me.

On the one hand, yes, I'm looking to get educated and learn to recognize different profiles. But I'm also just interested in good whiskey, even if it doesn't fit a standard profile.

What would you steer a predominantly cask strength bourbon/rye drinker to for a nice intro to Irish?

Doesn’t necessarily have to be cask strength either. Just wanting to try a good representation of what Irish whisky has to offer. I’ve had Jameson before and I’d rather drink water lol

A lot of bourbon/rye drinkers I know have really enjoyed Redbreast Lustau.

However it isn't quintessential Irish.

Maybe this is just me, but bourbon and rye has gone deep into big bold flavors. So many things are cask strength and heavily finished now I kinda equate it to an ice cream sundae with all of these things going on. To me, irish whiskey is vanilla ice cream and really good irish whiskey is really good vanilla ice cream. If it is what you are after, nothing else is like it, but it isn't really the same thing.

Thank you!

I love big bold flavors, but I’m also a big fan of just really good vanilla ice cream too…especially French vanilla. While I really enjoy good cask strength offerings, I’m not much of a fan of secondary finished products. Toasted barrels and double oaked are good, but I don’t care much for anything that is secondary wine finished.

Went to a very special bottle draft today. I’m exhausted. It was a big disappointment for me… until it wasn’t. More on that next week.

Here’s the pron.

And the bottle share after: I brought Stagg Jr Batch 14 and Smoke Wagon Malted Rye. I broke my dry spell for one day to sample some of these. :sneaky: And @Pinkdan everyone who tried the Smoke Wagon loved it. So it’s just you.:p

How many armed guards were at the front door?

It’s my #1 store. Good guys. Private event for the top 50 customers. Not MSRP, but much closer to MSRP than to secondary.

They are doing the same event in July with all the same bottles… so I guess I’ve got to keep buying. ;) :wtf:
Ask them how much to be customer #49, could save you some $$ if you know you're like customer 29 or something.

Don’t get me started. I was the 10th ranked customer, but it’s a random draft. I drew 48th, hence, my disappointment.

But my guy took care of me. I get a nice consolation next week, which happens to be one of my top 10 bottles I would have wanted.

The Sherry finish is all over the place around me. If anyone needs one. ;-)
I can find at least five of the Sagamore bottles, but the Sherry Finish hasn't made a peep at any of my stores. It's weird. I'm probably set until next year's Sherry release, but I'll let you know.

I’m a believer that a bourbon drinker can also enjoy Irish for what it is (and not all Irish is the same). It’s nice to explore and enjoy different flavor options.
