Dinner last night, after arriving in DC. Decent assortment, many outrageous prices (e.g., Elmer T. Lee at $89), no Van Winkles at all, straight 1 oz pours, absurdly weak on Scotch -- but I guess that's why they spell it their name with an "e".

I enjoyed the Ardbeg 10, because it's one of the few whiskies I don't have to share with my wife. She says Ardbeg's flavor reminds her of library paste (whatever that tastes like???). The Jefferson's Small Batch was much more to her liking.

Wednesday looks like a much better day to return...half price all day.

Those prices are crazytown. EHT small batch for $80?!? Gtfo. OF 1920 for $28?!? That’s a $10 pour, and even that is high. MWND for $150?!? Bwahahahaha!

Anybody seen the Bardstown Origins Rye out yet? I've seen and bought the first two. They seem to be pretty great for the price point, I'm about to open one of mine. Around here, a few cases were in stock, but they sold out in I dunno, a couple weeks maybe?

Anyone tried one of these yet?

I bought a bottle because it was recommended by the liqour store. I was talking to him about Kentucky Owl and asked if he thought it was worth the price. He said it was good and yes 180 for the bottle we were looking at feels really steep, but if I wanted to try what Kentucky Owl used to taste like then 2XO would be his recommendation since that was the master blender who helped lead Kentucky Owl for a while. I cracked the bottle last night and went through 3 glasses. It has a nice oak start without being overly oaky and thick syrup taste to start but the finish was had a snap and it finishes like a higher proof than it is. I really enjoyed it and will pick up another bottle the next time I go. Was about 99 bucks for me but feels well spent.

Did a blind tasting with a bunch of people last night at a friends. Everyone could contribute 1 bottle and we weren't really going for 'bring something really nice/fancy' so12 bottles were contributed. Big crowd of mostly bourbon drinkers with a mixed bag. Rankings were:
1. Green Spot - ex-Pinot Noir casks from Quails’ Gate
2. Johnnie Walker Sweet Peat - my contribution
3. Rowan's Creek
4-9. Bourbons
10. Kirkland Speyside - 19 years - This didn't really stand a chance in this lineup being so 'off profile' compared to everything else. I didn't like this at all but I want to try it again at some point because I feel like we hit this really late in the tasting and my palate was pretty much exhausted by the time we got here.
12. Something that didn't actually taste that bad but was almost impossible to drink because it smelled like someone dropped potpourri perfume into a barrel of bourbon.

the Sweet Peat was the only thing peated in the entire line up and it was amusing to watch people with no exposure to peated scotches recoil at the 'ash tray' flavor they got that they felt was so overwhelming. Especially given if you've got experience with that bottle you know it's peat, but it's pretty tame. Poured a drop of Octomore into a few folks hands and had them rub them together and smell them to really get an idea of what smelling a heavy peat was like but wouldn't let them drink it cause they wouldn't taste anything else after it.

A friend's Puerto Rican wife was there who is a total whisky newb but was like 'I'm sitting next to you, teach me this stuff' hated the Sweet Peat but wanted to try the Octomore after just to experience it. Poured us each a half ounce, she took a sip and had the expected reaction. BUT, she was game for another sip and her response was 'okay, I hate this, but how are they doing this' because of all the flavors you can get once you are beyond the smoke. We did another 1/4 ounce and a drop of water and she was blown away. Wonder if there is a peated scotch fan in the making.

First time my palate was exhausted. Strange experience.

Yea WT 12 and Balvenie 12 are my favorites in this spread. Do you have any suggestions that are similar?
I actually haven’t opened my WT12. A similar profile would likely be Russell’s Reserve. RR13 is a very tough get as well, but delicious. But there are also RR single barrels that are great.

Balvenie Doublewood is a unique offering. I don’t know if anything similar.

RR13 might be out of my price range if not msrp  :ROFLMAO:

guess I'll have to stick with what I have :')

Rowan’s Creek? Interesting.
Is Rowan’s creeks similar to Noah’s mill bc I hated Noah’s mill so much that I gave the Rowan’s creek away.
Rowan's Creek tastes like Noah's Mill's armpit. Noah's Mill is fantastic, at least the bottles I've had.
Everyone really liked it but I totally want to try it again in a smaller flight. The guy who brought it was like 'I was just on the bourbon trail and you can only get this in KY, and, and, and....' didn't have the heart to tell him I was checking out the price for it on the total wine website.

The older I get, the more "reply" emails I type then delete, the more forum retorts I don't post, and the more I hold my tongue. A lot of times, saying something doesn't accomplish anything useful and is not helpful, even if you are correct. I'd have left Mr Rowan's Creek there alone as well. He was enjoying his RARE bottle and happy to share it with others, which is pretty cool.

Agreed, no need to bum someone out who is offering something.
