A friend of mine just got back from the Scottish highlands, where he spent 5 days helping a local Baron with a really cool green energy project. The Baron owns a number of enterprises, one of which is a newish distillery Ardnamurchan, established in 2013 in a really remote part of the country, and claiming to be Scotland’s greenest distillery.

It’s a small distillery, and they have a pour your own bottle straight from the cask opportunity, which my friend took advantage of. Hope I get a taste. They also offer whole casks to the public if some of our Scottish members are looking to lead a GB. ;)

I know this has been commented on before, but I forgot to take a note on it...

For those that have had them, what's your feedback/ranking on the Redwood Empire cask strength trio?

Finally came across them...
I’ve had both the Emerald Giant Rye and Pipe Dream Bourbon. I thought the bourbon was good, but nothing special. The rye is fantastic and easily the better of the two that I had. I’m told that the Lost Monarch blend is the best of the three but I’ve yet to find one of those.

I would snap buy the rye again if I ran across another.

Although I’m far from an expert, I have all three and would absolutely agree with @Billy Baroo - Lost Monarch is easily my favorite. Followed by Emerald Giant. Then Pipe Dream

Playing poker tonight so probably not getting to the next sample. Therefore posting notes from yesterday.

Day 1-7 Notes are here:

Day 8: Ledaig Rioja Cask Finish Sinclair Series, 46.3%. Nose on this one quickly hits of peat, pepper, leather, and cherry. Tasting this beautifully colored dram brings to the forefront black pepper, apples and cherry. The finish isn't long with tannins and salt. 7/10.

Day 9: Caisteal Chamuis, 46%. This is the second Torabhaig distillery offering in the box. First look and smell reminds me of Laphroaig. Peaty campfire with hints of vanilla and caramel. This drams tastes of salt, tannins and oak with a surprise lemon quality. The finish is smokey and brings back the vanilla offering. 8/10

Day 10: Rock Island Malt Scotch Whisky, 46.8%. Nose is of peat, pear, and the ocean. The flavor of the dram is of the ocean, black pepper, peat and vanilla. The dram finishes with more pear, peat and a beautiful sea breeze. I really enjoyed this offering and want another dram. 9/10

Day 11: Mac-Talla Mara, 58.2%. This unknown Islay has the nose of a peaty campfire with undertones of nutty aromatics and hints of lemon. Tasting results in a flavor of oak, vanilla, charcoal, and finishes with lemon, peat, and sea salt. Overall, I was expecting a burn at this 58%, but this was very smooth all the way from nose to finish. I appreciated the cask strength which gets a +1 for that alone. 8/10.

Day 12: Talisker Port Ruighe, 45.8%. The aromatics of this dram are sea salt, peat, earth and hints of honey. The tasting is of thick carmel, toffee, raisins, and hints of chocolate. This finishes off with cigar smoke that turns into rich dark chocolate. As Talisker is one of my favorite distilleries this sample was a treat as it's been in my list for a while. It became even more so given the depth and complexity of this whisky. Dare I say 10/10?
