Anyone watch episode 1 of The Night Of on HBO yet?

I finally watched last night (it's been available "early" on HBO for a week or so) and holy shit was it good. Written by Richard Price (Clockers, Sea of Love, The Wire, tons and tons of great books) and co-starring John Turturro who is phenomenal in his brief first episode appearance. Evidently James Gandolfini was originally set to take his role, but I can't imagine he'd have been better. Different, sure, but not better.

It's only going to be 8 episodes and 1 season IIRC. Must watch imo.

"Holy shit it was good" is an understatement.

Shame Gandolfini didn't live to be in it as planned, but John Turturro is always amazing/an all time favourite and was spectacular in the very limited screen time in ep.1. He's going to kill this role if the writing stays at the level of ep.1.

Also liked the "Bodie" appearance.

Been watching Marcella on Netflix this week. Only 8 episodes in the season, so not too much filler and good performances all around. Lee Adama will always be Lee Adama to me, but he's still good.

My wife just bought me DVDs of the entire series "Third Rock from the Sun."

I loved this offbeat comedy when it was on TV, and haven't seen every episode.

John Lithgow is downright hilarious.

Anyone watched Netflix's Stranger Things?

We've been enjoying the '80s styling and synth soundtrack.

Only a couple of episodes in but it seems fun.

Been looking forward to it for a while and it's getting an incredible response. I'm sure I'll hit at least episode one this weekend.

It's a slow burner but I likes it. Some decently freaky goings on. Wanted to watch more tonight but it's late!

Secondary bonus (for me at least): Winona Ryder. I imagine many in my demographic have always had a thing for her.

I was 20 when Heathers came out. She was 17. I was in love. That movie pushed all the right buttons for 20 year old me.

Not sure your Heathers fantasies are gonna hold up! Winona is good in this though.

Three episodes in. Really like it. Nicely paced, good casting. About to do episode 4...

I'm 47 now. 47 year old Rob has different Winona fantasies than 20 year old Rob.

If you like 'em strung out, neurotic and desperate, this is defo for you!

I'm very much enjoying Stranger Things thus far. Simultaneously nostalgic and fresh. Great telly.

Well, strung out, neurotic and desperate is not the fantasy, but I'm looking forward to starting the series tonight.

I'm one episode in on Stranger Things. Gonna watch one more. Not in love yet. We'll see where this next one goes.

Okay, I caught the first episode this weekend and really, really liked it. Winona Ryder confirmed still hot even as strung out, neurotic, and desperate. And totally right - the music is fantastic.

I was even initially reluctant because it seems like so many people are getting on the John Carpenter fandom bandwagon. This is definitely in that vein, but so far it's very good on its own even stripping away the charming Carpenter aesthetic.

Huge vote for Night Of. I watched the first episode last night and I'm hooked. So well done.

We watched the season finale last night. Really enjoyed it from start to finish.

Pace picks up from episode 3.

The music is great - the incidental stuff through to the '80s classics. Looking forward to the next season already!

Carpenter is my favorite director of all-time. I was 10 years old the first time I saw BTINLC. 30 years later and I've yet to see a better movie.

It's just a testament to his directing that I have four of his movies above it even though I love Big Trouble. Slight derail, top five JC movies:

5. Big Trouble In Little China
4. Prince of Darkness
3. Escape from New York
2. The Thing
1. Halloween

My only point above was that he is very much the current favorite among young directors and his influence has definitely produced some very high quality stuff, but there are a ton of mediocre and bad Carpenter imitations as well.

I would say among the best Carpenter wannabe movies over the past several years were House of the Devil, It Follows, The Guest, and You're Next. Even one of my favorite movies this year, Green Room, owes quite a bit to The Thing in terms of the type of tension that's built on a small, enclosed space.

Can't argue with your order, although I'm not as big of a Halloween fan as most.

Tob you have to check out this interview with the kid from Stranger Things. Hilarious.

The Roots mini series remake has just started to air here. Wow this is some powerful TV.

Anyone catch it?

I had avoided it just because the original is such a strong memory for me that I fear I wouldn't be fair to any remake attempt. So far yours is the only opinion I've seen, but if I see raves by other people I trust I might have to check it out, though.

Started watching Chicago Fire from the beginning and been hooked ever since. Also will start third season of Chicago P.D. soon. Can't beat Hank Voight.

Watched Stranger Things over the course of 2 days. What an awesome show! Definitely a love letter to Spielberg, King, and Carpenter. The music choices were all top notch and the acting was amazing. Winona Ryder definitely knocked her part out of the park and the kids were excellent.

Okay anyone not watching The Night Of on HBO is out of their minds. Easily the best first three episodes of any show in years, probably since the first three eps of GoT, maybe even better than those.

I couldn't agree more.

Were only three episodes in. Colleen and I are enjoying. I agree about WR. She is nailing her character that is losing her mind. Love it :)

Anyone else catch Preacher? @ChaosRock did you ever start it? My son and I watched the season finale last night. For the most part the show had gotten better each week. I'm already looking forward to S2 (we plan on ordering the books as well).
