Yeah yeah, sure there are a thousand threads out there discussing this.

But lets really get into why shuffle behind is the one true way.

My reasoning:

The person dealing is pretty much at that moment the most attentive person at the table.

He dealt the cards. The hand is over. He cleans up the mess he made to shuffle the cards.

If there's a dispute that requires flipping cards over, he's probably the most qualified at that moment. So having control of the muck is advantageous.

Shuffle ahead requires getting the attention of the next player to help clean up the mess. They are usually not ready.

Dealer is 100% going to be at the table when clean up and shuffle needs to happen.

There. Thats it. Shuffle ahead is barbaric knuckle dragging behavior/

This is the only correct answer. Let's move on.

Don't know what ahead or behind means.
I' ve played with the small blind shuffling the deck he is going to deal next hand, as the new dealer.
Too many people shuffling can be a mess, while a single deck is slow.

My intention for the near future, Pfizer, Moderna etc permitting, is to use two decks with a permanent (still playing) dealer, aided by a cheapo shuffling machine. If the latter breaks down, you get a new one.
Player on the Button to cut the deck before it's dealt by the permanent physical dealer.
Nice? :)

I believe you are describing Shuffle ahead. Which requires the attentiveness of 3 players at the end of hand.

The current dealer with the muck and stub. Passing those cards and gathering the other players cards to give the future shuffler, while the small blind is shuffling and apologizing for getting his cards mixed up with the cards you are passing across his path (to the next shuffler).

Shuffletech might help. (or shuffle behind)

And yes, I like a dedicated dealer too.

The number one reason in my opinion why shuffle behind is the only way is because the dealer should not touch the deck until he is dealing. Previous dealer clears the board and shuffles "current dealer" cuts as he is finishing his own deal. The now fresh cut deck is passed to the next dealer who has not touched or possibly manipulated in anyway. That is the only way 2 deck and rotate dealer should be dealt!

I also agree with @MatB as to the alertness of the current dealer and speeding up the game as well!

I've actually never seen shuffle ahead, and if I did I fear I would not be able to keep my disgust hidden!
Ohh it happens... at one game and believe me it takes half the damn day to get used to it... every single time!!probably a Lie, I never really get used to it, it throws the rhythm off somethin terrible for me but the locals are used to it.

Ben hit on one of my biggest reasons for Shuffle behind: 3 players manipulate the deck. One shuffles, one cuts, one deals.

If the municipal workers game in Rounders used shuffle behind, Mikey and worm would have never had their asses beat. There would have been no opportunity to deal off the bottom, because it would take 3 players working in unison to "fix" a deck.

I will also add that, when shuffling ahead, you have to pitch cards past someone that is still pulling in the muck. For amateur dealers, that can be a real - even an insurmountable - game delay issue.

I've played in games that use shuffle behind, and other games that use shuffle ahead. I started out in the shuffle behind camp, but was a convert to shuffle ahead, if that's what the players use and do it well. I've played in some shuffle ahead games where the players were just so used to it, it was never a problem.

Regardless of the method, though, someone other than the dealer should always be cutting the deck.

Somebody's about to get a Saturday full of the correct way to do it. :cool

If done correctly, the shuffle ahead method will have the current dealer pull in and push the muck/cards to the BB of the hand that just finished. This should be done before the next deck is dealt. If it's done immediately at the end of the hand, shuffle ahead shouldn't involve pitching cards past anyone else collecting or dealing cards.

What does ahead and behind mean in this context? I remember there were three commonly used shuffle protocol, with big blind shuffle being the best. change my mind.

Shuffle ahead, cut behind... easy peasy and the best way to do it!

Couldn’t make any better points for shuffle behind than this post here. Great post @Poker Zombie! Never thought about the “Rounders” scene but your spot on!

I had the opposite experience. I was using "shuffle ahead" until the first game I sat in that did behind, and I was instantly converted. It's so much cleaner to shuffle after you deal.

The only awkward thing about shuffle behind is players are tempted to reach past the current dealer to get the ready deck to it's destination. If you "train" players to have a little patience, and instead just set the ready deck next to the current dealer so he can pass it at his convenience, this one issue is solved.

Otherwise, shuffle behind is superior in every way.

But overall, the important thing is that the shuffler and the cutter are always two different people. The way we implement shuffle behind, the dealer does cut the deck because he did not shuffle. (Just as a pro dealer would cut a deck taken from a shuffler machine.)

Could someone briefly write out - or direct me its location in a thread - the steps/needs for each of the three principals in the "shuffle behind" method? Full disclosure, I'd like to copy & paste it directly into my house rules document.
