Ok, so I was leaving my house this morning to go out of town for a couple of days. Literally on my way out the door, I saw something that made me worry that my house was being monitored to see if we would be home this weekend. I immediately started to worry about a possible break in, and I freaked out a little, thinking about all of the birdcages filled with my beloved chips on display in my office. I ran back in the house and started stacking rack after rack into my safe. All but about 1000 chips fit in there, but it has really made me think about things!!

I think I will be installing an alarm system at my house next week. Not ONLY because if my chips, of course, but that is a major concern! I hate the thought of my chips living in the safe where I can't see them!

Do any of you worry about the security of your chip treasures? What do you do to keep them "safe"?

I used to have a Doberman. Maybe I need another.

That would freak me out as well. Install an alarm with cell backup. I would love to put chips in the safe but guns go in there first!

We have four dogs.... two large pit mixes, a Weimaraner, and a 35-lb lab/pit/tazmanian devil. The chipes are safe. :)

My biggest worry is storm damage, if a tree comes crashing down through the roof. Lots of old large pines on the chip room side of the house.

I got a sheriff at home. :)

But this is probably a good deterrent too.

You DO know how much these things weigh. Stealing thousands of chips would be hard to do. (and I bet the thief would take the Smith & Wesson sets as their first choice from my house - suckers.)

And then the thief would have to sell them which might prove hard to do as well. The community is small, the market thin and I would be motivated.

So I don't worry. Nice thing about being in the middle of no where is random crimes are very unlikely.

Got it covered. The only chips in Denver house are in a fireproof safe (my biggest concern in the mountains) that is well hidden. There is a security system but completely unmarked and my neighbor guards the place. Part of the driveway has about a 10% uphill grade. If I do not come for winter, the neighbor doesn't plow it. I'd like to see anyone get in there without a Snowcat.

Az chips are not in a safe but are guarded by a security system and are in waterproof containers...plus my old man carries a .38 at all times and has an itchy trigger finger.

My other chips are being housed on the downlow by another chipper. :)

No worries here.

Melissa - is that a walk in safe? Must be huge to handle all your chips.

We put an alarm in about seven years ago, and it has a smoke detector installed with it that is connected to the alarm. So if a fire breaks out, while we are gone it automatically sends that to our alarm company and they dispatch the fire department. This actually lowered our home owners insurance too. We also added security cameras to the alarm recently, and they start recording if the alarm is set off. They record to a server at the alarm company, so it can't be tampered with. We can also access these cameras anytime from our cell phones when we are gone, whether the alarm is set or not. That can be fun to play around with to watch the dogs while we are gone, or other people that may be home too

Why not install one of those smoke out devices that just fills the place where you can't see your hand infront of you, install it with a double trigger to reduce the risk of false alarms setting it off. Although if you have dogs this might not be the best idea.

I have to agree that it is highly unlikely that a thief would steal poker chips. As stated above, they are too heavy and I would suspect that most thiefs can't tell a valuable chip from a dice chip or even a composite chip from a plastic one. Not exactly the type of item that a thief would be drawn to. I'll tell you what I worry about -- being robbed while hosting a game. That's a little more realistic concern than having the chips stolen. And even if such a robbery should occur, I don't think the chips would be taken -- only the cash.

We have a few "extra" items scheduled on our homeowners policy. It's only a few extra bucks/year (ymmv depending on insured value, obv).

My HP set is scheduled on my HOP on a rider with my wife's engagement ring. Barely nudges the premium dial and totally worth it IMO

This thread's timing is great, as security is evidently an issue in my household.

It's not burglars I'm worried about - it's my kids!!!

Megan is allowed to look at my sample collection, which is currently housed in the filing cabinet in the home office. She can take the folder out and look at them in said folder, as long as she puts the folder on a high surface, like a desk or table top.

I'm guessing she got distracted by something shiny, left the folder within the reach of Lauren, who extracted one of @Jeff 's Everleigh chips ($1) and managed to transport it to the dryer undetected:

In the heat stakes, seems like Retro Blue > Retro Green > Retro Red > Black.

RIP Everleigh $1 chip! :(

On a side note, I'm not too worried about my chips. They're not irreplaceable or even outlandishly valuable at this point. If someone did steal them, I bet it would be under the misconception that they are still live. They'd probably just be tossed out in disappointment rather than fenced after some investigation.

I am sure that we belong to a large enough community that even if stolen, word would break pretty fast about anybody moving them. Outside of the listed members here there are probably 2x more that visit as guests, on both sites. Then there is the word of mouth groups both inside and outside of the cctc members.

Still would be a huge piss off though. For the record....
It wasn't me outside your house...

Not pointing fingers or anything but you fit pretty well the description of a while male seen grabbing chips off my porch last week... LOL!!!! ;)

My chips are in my office with all of my other collections. I do have an alarm and three dogs. One that would lick the perpetrator to death, another small dog that would harm the perps ears from the barking and one that will definitely take his head off. So I think my chips are safe although I have been thinking about a laser grid across the floor that the perp would have to get through un-breached or it sets off sirens and booby traps!

One of my first reactions was "I really should sell about half of my chips".
But after sleeping on it, I came to my senses and realized just how stupid that sounded!!

Also, I don't think the Doberman will not work, because when I am gone, I usually have my dogs with me.

I really don't want my chips to live in a safe, they need to be out so I can enjoy them!
So I will look into an alarm system.

I hadn't really considered the weight of the chips...they are pretty darn heavy. That, and the facts that few would recognize the value, and the small community...chips probably wouldn't be the top theft target if someone did break into my house. Good points, everyone!

I guess my freak-out was due to the fact that most of the other items in my house feel more replaceable. I love the chipies!!

I will spring them from the safe when I return home

You could surround the chips with full 1.75 liter bottles of whiskey. About 8 bottle should be enough to keep their hands full and off those chipes!

I actually installed SimpliSafe yesterday. It uses a cellular signal, has battery back up, and is wireless. For $15/month they have monitored service, but you don't have to use it, you could just use as an audible alarm. For $25/month, you get the text alerts and remote arming, so I can set the alarm from my mobile now if I forget. I liked that I could make it as ridiculous a system as I wanted, I added glass break sensor, water sensor, freeze sensor along with fire, motion, entry sensors. I can also add more as they expand the system, think they are adding cameras soon, and you buy it so I can take it with me if I sell my house, attached with command strips so easy to remove the sensors. I liked the Panic button on the bedroom wall, but since it is wireless, you could easily put it under your poker table if you needed one there, or get 2 or 4 or 10, whatever you need. Just have to hold it for 2 seconds. Only thing I am not happy with was the "yard" sign, which was a sign, but nothing to put it on, need to get a stake at Home Depot.

I already had cameras, but wanted a networked alarm as well. If you want a "refer a friend" discount, PM me your email.

Call me paranoid, nothing wrong with a bit of caution.
