Things That Are Bullsh*t (12 Viewers)

I had a professor in college that created his own calculus book in order for us to have to buy it from the bookstore and get commission. Not sure if that's common practice nowadays but it just felt dirty.
I mean... it's very common in the social sciences, humanities, etc. But in math? Calculus is calculus. Calculus is truth and not really subjective. I'm sure there are standard textbooks that are as good or better than whatever your professor wrote. So, yes, that is bullshit, unless he was part of a team that developed a new/better way to teach calculus.

I had plenty of this. I even had it with one teacher in high school. But what the hell do I care - I’m going to have to buy a textbook anyway, right?

Don’t forget when they issue an “update” so you can’t buy a used copy and they add 3 pages to a 200 page textbook

Still very common, very bullshit and originally a scam by the textbook companies. No longer can you buy a book and learn from it then resell it to next year's undergrads, you need to buy a book with an access code to homework problems formulated for the professor by whatever company. So company sells Calc II: Diffy Q's, Electric Boogaloo for $75 in 2022 with an access code to the online learning sessions that include little quizzes and problems.

BOOM, access code is one time only so you can't just resell the book. Ways to crush the secondary market. Fuckers. For fluid mechanics we make our own practice problems for this reason. Sadly, we still find them on Chegg days later.

Buying the Professor's textbook? Shady, but whatever.

But my son's professor forced 600 students to pay a $99 technology fee, that was duplicative of technology the university had in place... and the Professor was using the money to fund her support of Planned Parenthood.

That's interesting. Since university refunded them, they have no monetary damages. So they're basically suing her for spite? That too is bullshit, but it's the kind of bullshit I can get on board with.

Good God. Always kills me when people post about their crimes. Have we learned nothing from how obsessed our country is on true crime and mob dramas?!

Unfortunately many of these textbooks are simply rehashed versions of the older ones. I was poor enough to be in charge of revising some of the edits for the 7th edition of a chemistry textbook. I could barely tell the difference. Some publishers require this to be done so that they can charge unknowing students another $400, while the genuine authors barely get any of the royalties.

Chegg is the most bullshit site in academia. Can't make up original non- MCQ exams online anymore. It's like they want to suffer in a cold, detached room for 3 hours!!
Yup. Someone released fake exam answers before on there and we caught a number of students parroting the nonsense answers for some of our COVID/home exams. Damn shame.

Always make sure to make the variables much different than we usually use.

I booked my flight through southwest. I get TSA pre check. 2 of my 3 kids got the pre check. My wife and my oldest did not, and they would not let them go through pre check. I have all boarding passes on my phone. Didn’t matter.

Got to our gate with 15 minutes to spare.
Wife and I just did pre check. Wife added to her reservation and it stuck. I received my number. Added to reservation. Didn’t show up on my boarding pass. But the number is in an email. Guy in Houston lets me thriugh anyway. NBD. Return trip I’m in OMA (they’ve always been assholes) at the airport at 5am. Dude says if it’s not on your boarding pass it’s not valid. I tell him they issued me a number. Which means it’s valid. I’ve been approved. He argues. I tell him I had no issues in Houston. He looks at me and says you aren’t in Houston are you? I smile and say I thought you were a FEDERAL agency, so one would think there’d be a blanket policy. He smirked and kicked me out of line. Sorry @bsdunbar1 OMA sucks and has for 20 years. Maybe it has to do with SAC. I dunno. But they’ve ALWAYS been 8====D at OMA

Stupid Lowes, trying to capitalize on my procrastination...

Had an English prof do the same. Was the worst book I had to buy in college, and to add insult to injury, the bookstore wouldn't buy it back at the end of the semester.

Don’t know where else to post this, so it goes here.

I am in Hawaii celebrating my parents 80th birthdays. Today, I was walking through a Tommy Bahamas store and the place was packed. I heard a guy say to his (I presume) wife, “I am going to buy the poker chip set”. It completely threw me off my game, completely forgot why I was in the store. All I could think was, “don’t do it buddy! Let me help you!!”

After I walked around the store in a complete fog of disbelief caused by what I had heard, I decided that I would go to find the guy and save him from himself. I couldn’t find him!!!

I don’t know how I will sleep tonight.

When a longtime 100% feedback member works out a deal for a single chip. They say they have a couple chips and I offer to buy two. They send pics of each side of two chips and say if they look good send payment to xxxx. One chip has two visible flaws and I ask if there's another chip to pick from or I'd like to just buy the one that looked good. They reply they'll send pics of some of the best chips they have along with flak for being picky. I once a day or every other day checked in for first few days to tell them sorry for hassle and I'd buy the single good one and send payment if they don't have time. Haven't heard back since Sunday.
Pretty sure they ghosted me for being picky and now won't even sell me the one good chip. Do I send payment to maybe get a response and hope I'm not out the money too? They've been online or posted every day or couple times a day so is any response at all just too much of an ask?

not sure what to make of this.

Noway I’d ever send a dime. Why? Why reward being ghosted with a payment?

As always, there are no rules here. Sellers always reserve the right and as humans, we all have different moral compasses. That’s it really.

It’s also okay to be a picky buyer. I’ve been ghosted plenty, especially when I was a newbie, but you learn to move on and seek out like minded chippers.
