Why is baseball the best sport on the planet? Discuss. (7 Viewers)

And we made it 8 pages before WW was mentioned. In the baseball thread.

Weird how the same PCFers can’t let it go.

This sure is a far cry from what my heart was looking for:

"I used to listen to Cubs games on the radio with my granddad. It was amazing to share that bond with him".
Or
"I take my kids to a game every year, soak up the sun, watch batting practice...it's amazing time together".
Or
"I was there when Chipper Jones hit that walk-off against the Dodgers to put the Braves in the playoffs, I'll never forget it".

Nope, leave it to this place to turn it into, "what a dumb fucking waste of time baseball is, not a sport, worse than death".
I need to find a new hobby.

Carry on.
"It's Time For Dodger Baseball."

My best friend lived locally and his mom was our pastor, they were like a surrogate family for me. She's as cool as the other side of the pillow and about as old school LA as you can get. I loved the time I got to spend with their family, and really the only times I got to go to Dodger games were with them. Many of the best memories of my childhood were spending time with them, including at Dodger stadium. He also happened to be one of my first coaches, for little league baseball.

Ticket from the first date of Kathy and Rene. 40 years ago, and of course their first date was a Dodger game.

edit - for in game experience, yeah I'm hard pressed to find anything better than baseball. A dodger dog, sun in the sky, cool breeze coming in, and that Dodger blue out on the field - one HELL of an afternoon.

Dunno what the hell they’re doing but I’ll concede that looks like a game/activity rather than a sport
I don’t either, it just came up under “traditional Swedish sports” - lol .

I’m all in though  :ROFLMAO:

can your performance be improved directly by improving your physical condition? if yes, then you are playing a sport. if not, you are playing a game.

this test would still inevitably result in some edge cases, but baseball sure as hell isn't one of them.
If you seriously think this then you know next to nothing about training for baseball players. This might give you some idea:

Same goes for those who think that professional golfers aren't athletes. Those guys spend as much time in training and weight rooms as most of us spend at our day jobs, precisely because it's REQUIRED to make them the best in the world at the SPORT that they play.

Unless I misunderstood your post to mean that baseball clearly IS a sport in which case carry on lol.

Reminds me of a joke I heard one time:

Baseball is like a strip club: 8 men standing around watching one person work.

Tl:dr

Next to my family, baseball is my first love. I played, I coached, and now I’m an umpire. It’s a team sport, but with individual aspects. I can watch it on TV, a computer, or in person all day, everyday.

Sitting in the stands with my boys is pure joy for me. They love the game; not as much as me, but still have a passion for it.

I’ve even been to a World Series game between the Orioles and Phillies (game 2, 1983)

I have a ton of memories from Dodger Stadium. Too many to go through here. But seeing Vin Scully walking through the concourse before the game is a fun one that always stands out.

Lots of talk about listening to a ball game on the radio in this thread. Well, I was lucky enough to listen to Vin on the TV and radio growing up. He didn’t need the 2-man commentating crew. He narrated a ball game beautifully from first pitch to final out.

It was always a great day when you got to hear, “It’s time for Dodger Baseball.”

OMG, I miss Vin so much. Legend.

I'd rather watch cricket than baseball... Come at me!! :D

baseball is too slow, hardly any moments of interest in a given game. Limited participation in any given play by majority of people on the field. It's honestly a terrible game. I do enjoy baseball movies though - I would argue that it has the best movies, but that's largely because the action is so limited that it is easy to capture and story-tell.

Maybe the pitch clock has made it watchable though.

Unless I misunderstood your post

very much so - i assumed it was so intuitively obvious that physical conditioning can directly improve your baseball performance that i did not think to clarify my position lol.

Basically, this place (the people, outside or meetups, really) sorta just sucks.

Meh, it's like any corner of the internet these days. You can either just roll your eyes at the expected BS or what bothers you, engage with it if it truly annoys you (for almost little to no potential benefit save rare instances), or just choose who to interact with or who is worth your time. Or just take a shit on everyone and everything if that makes you feel better. Pretty easy to create your own experience here and enjoy it, as well as enjoying local games and other meet-ups. Still better than a baseball game :sneaky:.

Yes we know. Everybody who goes to meetups is great and everybody else sucks. We non-travelers don’t believe it the first few times we hear it. But after a while, we get the message.

Host one and we will come there. Or just tell us what cities are convenient and we’ll look at booking a venue in one. I’d like to see what goes on over in that corner of the world. Unless it’s Boston.

Having my house full of you gassy old bastards seems slightly worse than paying a couple grand to spend a weekend in somebody else’s house with you gassy old bastards. But if some other local decides to volunteer, lock up my seat at the cheap nit table!

I’m sorry if I took part in screwing up your thread, but come on, you pose the question kinda like the naive sorority girl on Newsroom, and you say ”discuss”. And then get surprised/offended when the discussion goes somewhere you didn’t expect.

Anyway, activity, game, sport. I don’t care. I don’t watch it. Maybe I could get in to it if I gave it a go, who knows. No local heroes to root for though.

It's a sport. And I'm not surprised at the PCF response...typical, I just always hope for better. My bad. Whatever Newsroom is... (is it a stupid boring show that probably isn't even a show?) yeah, it was definitely a naively worded question on my part. I should expect the speed with which it turned to shit.
