OP went with the optimal, full-rack 800-chip set recommended by these forum sages and fine fellas:On forum advice, I have ended up with this 800-chip breakdown to cover all of .25/.25, .25/.50, 1/1 and 1/2:
100 x 25c
200 x $1
400 x $5
80 x $25
20 x $100
I have seen many breakdowns with this kind of shape.
My question is: why do we want so many $5 chips?
I understand the desire to have plenty of workhorse chips. But the desire to have racks and racks of them seems to be uniquely common with the $5 chip--way more than, say, the $1, which is arguably the workhorse at .25/.25 and .25/.50. I have looked through the forum and found no clear answer to why this is. 200 of them seems to be enough for a well-functioning game, no?
And yet, clearly I myself have succumbed to "more 5s". In my case I attribute it to wanting to bring the positive aspects of the "casino experience" to my game, and this apparently includes having generous stacks of red chips. But then why do casinos do it that way? Is it just that the $5 is the most versatile denomination? (It seems so to me.)
Is it just that red chips look good?
This.Because……….we are kids
Shoot iim 52….
This. Which is why I have 2000 x $5 chips. lolAnyone who wants to play poker with like 15 chips in front of them isn’t a chip collector. You just can’t be.
My game used to have 20/20/20 starting stacks at .25/1/5 for $125. We regularly got 6-8 racks of $5s in play (I have 13 racks for multitable) and it was awesome seeing big stacks get moved around.
Fun mix for sure. Was trying to use a color from each chip as the denoms progressed without playing messyGoddamnit, that is a nice combination.
Taking notes. Working on what the 5 will be.Fun mix for sure. Was trying to use a color from each chip as the denoms progressed without playing messy

has this thread degenerated into just a thread of $5's pr0n yet?
i advocate that everyone should have only 2 racks of $5's and dump the rest on the classifieds for me and a certain booyah to buy.
I think those that are advocating for fewer 5s just never have had a chance to play with the Bay Area chippers. One night and I’m hooked. This was a small stack too, compared to the rest of your games.View attachment 1247510

Did you not read the previous 93 posts? Why so many 5's????
Wrong to have fun while playing?Too many denominations gets dysfunctional.
Too many chips of any denomination gets dysfunctional too, but this is not understood around here; it's considered fun. Wrong, IMHO
I don’t know about anyone else but I enjoy having so many chips it’s dysfunctional.Too many denominations gets dysfunctional.

Players' stacks AND bets should be readily countable. Not the case with tons of chips.Wrong to have fun while playing?

Ma Man!!!Wrong to have fun while playing?
An equally dysfunctional fun would be to have six denominations in play, just to enjoy the colors and edge spots.Ma Man!!!

I switched from $.25/$.50 to $1/$1 and I'll never look back.Now fracs. They’re useless.
Now I really want to see someone fill a bathtub with chips. Anyone?Edit: Chip fetishism is another issue. You could use thousands of chips in your bath tub, just like Scroodge McDuck
How many chips is too many chips for you? I guess if the stacks are dirty or in stacks of something weird like 14, it’d be a pain but stacks of 20 shouldn’t be an issue.Players' stacks AND bets should be readily countable. Not the case with tons of chips.

As long as they are not dirty I never have an issue eyeballing stacks of any size. How many chips is too many chips for you? I guess if the stacks are dirty or in stacks of something weird like 14, it’d be a pain but stacks of 20 shouldn’t be an issue.
Agreed. Not difficult to assess any sized stack, as long as the highest value chips are out front and stacks are clean. As long as they are not dirty I never have an issue eyeballing stacks of any size.
Is this a raked game or a game with a dealer working for tips? Very strange to see $30 in $1’s in every starting stack unless they are being pulled off the table regularly.I played in a new game last week where the host is not in the MOAR $5s category.
For a $1/2 game a starting stack of $300 was:
$1 x 30
$5 x 24
$25 x 6
All rebuys and add-ons were $25s and $100s. So on a table of 8 players, we had about 2 racks of $5s in play. I was actually surprised that it worked just fine. And this was by choice, not necessity, as I saw that he had several more racks of $5s available.
