WWYD? Guy messes w/ your card protector during all in moment... (4 Viewers)

Fold pre, obv. As played, shoot the guy that touched your card protector, taze the dealer, and hit the villain in the hand with a baton.

Honestly, this is probably why I usually use my penis as my card protector. People rarely touch it, and given its considerable size, it works at most tables. Also, it's a helluva conversation piece, so to speak.

I'd use mine as well but I would have to lay face down on the table to get anywhere close to my cards...

Yours isn't detachable?

In re-reading this, I think hero's leak is that his poker intelligence levels are tied to the card protector. I'd probably leave the card protector in my pants, secure in the knowledge that the power I'm drawing off it to perform complex mental deductions will be safe from interruption by stupid bar poker players.

Also, just an idea, if you used a semi-automatic machine gun as your card protector, you'd likely not get anyone touching in. It would provide physically awkward and kind of exhausting to repeatedly check your hole cards, but let's face it, you prolly should be folding more anyway.

In all real seriousness, it's a bar league. If you're gonna keep playing there, get a thicker skin in regards to distractions. Same goes for the casino. People say and do random stuff all the time.

Here ya go: http://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/how-rude-was-this.6599/

I guess it's not *completely* the same scenario but...

OMG! nice find, lol. Damn, I need to retire the damn blaze orange card protector... It's WI, and we're all programed to see the damn color (ie. deer hunting is big here after all).

Obviously, I post threads to vent, share, and to see what others think. However, just like with most bad beats or cooler hands, I move on pretty quickly and forget. Totally forgot this story. So funny the parallels. I can't believe you remembered this.

What if you had won the all-in? How would you feel about the drunk fondling your card protector?

OMG, I would have been pissed!!! Well, not because he lost the hand, because he was immediately cashing out. He had so much more to donate. OK, so I don't think anyone was happy to see him and his $900 leave the table.

I doubt you would have gotten mad had you won either hand. It sucks that the guy ruined your train of thought on hand number two, but I'm sure it was innocent and he probably saw the cool looking thing and didn't even realize you had a tough decision to make (which in reality wasn't even that tough of a decision, I mean the guy bluffed you, and credit to him, but all you could beat was a bluff).

I wasn't happy about the distraction, and not happy about people touching my stuff w/o asking (just common courtesy). In both losses, I recovered quickly (as in, by the time I saw my next cards). I genuinely appreciated the guy's bluff, and I gave him a very sincere "nice play sir" after the hand. Inside I was smiling, because my gut read that he was weak was correct. Information to exploit later on.

Sure, I can be sensitive in certain areas (such as wanting to be a good host, putting on a good game environment, etc..), but I'm pretty hard to put on tilt. Dealing with the crap I've had to do in my career, I have a tough skin, and if people want to waste their poker energy trying to needle me, that's' fine. I'm sure I'll figure out a way to exploit it, lol... :)

I'm sure its frustrating, but playing in a bar with drunk people will lead to suck outs and people picking up your card protector at times. It will also be +ev in the long term if you play solid poker, which it seems like you do, so just keep telling yourself that when something happens that may frustrate or tilt you, and maybe you can relax and have more fun at the table.

I've been asked about the card protector lots, and as stated, I'm a self professed chip geek, and have no problem talking about the card protector, chips, whatever, or even handing it over to someone to check out. However, for them to grab it without permission, during an all-in scenario (from on top of my protected cards?), I don't care if it was a freaking blinky light and drawing lots of attention, it's just bad etiquette.

Just cuz it's shiny, bright and attractive, doesn't give someone a right to snag it. And just cuz they're drunk, doesn't excuse the behavior... It's the same logic as those who blame a woman for dressing sexy, as a reason she was groped, or make excuses for the groper, saying "oh, he was just drunk". So, if I don't want people touching my card protector during all-on hands, I should use a less sexy/attractive card protector? and not play with anyone who's drinking? OK, I'll work on that. :)

Wow, ok I wasn't trying to blame you at all, and was giving you a legit non-trolling response. I don't think what the guy did was right, I was just trying to say that I didn't think there was any malice behind it. And I'm not saying you shouldn't bring your cool card protector with you, but if you bring it into that environment I wouldn't be too surprised if some drunk guy picked it up, that's all. Not excusing the guy's behavior because he was drunk ,because it was inappropriate, but drunk people sometimes do stupid things, and it would be naïve of you to think otherwise.

I actually wasn't responding to you in particular sir. And I agree 100%, that the guy had no malice behind it. Just poor timing, and in general people shouldn't touch other people's stuff. There are environments where it's more likely to happen, sure, a bar game, alcohol involved, yes. But it still doesn't make it right. But honestly, I didn't get bent out of shape about it last night, and was just mulling it all over this morning, which is why I posted, wanting people's honest opinions. I appreciate you sharing yours. Sorry if I came across preachy. :( still haven't slept.... My eyes look like a close up of ren and stimpy's...

You didn't get bent out of shape about it but you threatened to punch the guy and then created a thread about in on PCF?

It's bar poker. I'm amazed you haven't gotten into more altercations.

Anywhere you go you're gonna run into jerks, you need to let this shit roll off your back.

I had a guy needle me for 20 minutes at the Venetian this weekend. He wasn't kidding around either, but I kept laughing at him, which really pissed him off (and didn't affect me in the slightest). You ever consider laughing this stuff off as lolbarpoker?

Didn't bother to fully read all of the posts (except berg's, 'cuz he's usually hilarious and so over-the-top that it's almost pertinent in a round-about way).

But I will say three things that immediately come to mind.....

1. Eric, you sure seem to be a drama magnet* when it comes to this kind of stuff. I love ya man, but geez.... * somebody needs to photoshop you a new avatar
2. A lot of poker players in Madison WI must be assholes. Or at least the assholes in Madison WI always seem to find the games you're in.
3. At least you didn't go over the table after the guy(s). That seems to be more of an east coast problem.

It's true. And it's also the reason I stopped going to all but one other home game in the area. I need to enjoy myself more than I need to make money by taking advantage of drunktards.

Dave, if you need a list of non asshole poker players from the Madison area I can forward you my email invite distribution list ;)

LOL at #3

At #1, I don't care for drama in my life, I try to live pretty simple, but not gonna lie, I seen some crazy sh!t :)

At #2, most poker players in Madison are super nice. And I suppose this leads back to #1, but when I do run into a weird situation, I probably open myself up for ridicule by posting about it here. I play a lot, and see a lot, and 99% of the time, there's no drama. I'm sure lots of people see crazy drama at the poker table, and just share it with their local friends. I'll try to find more friends in RL, lol :)

Agreed with those who have said you need a thicker skin... with all the shit you've seen throughout your career you should easily be able to let the small stuff slide.

The things you've posted that bother you? They happen in poker. It's the nature of the game and/or the nature of those drawn to the game. The game isn't going to change so its on you to stop sweating the small stuff.

Let that that does not matter truly slide.

Seriously, you've had more "situations" pop up in the last couple years than I have... maybe ever. And I've been playing the game since elementary school. A thing is not a thing unless you make it a thing ;)

Trihonda, I wonder if there are other things in life, outside of poker, that are creating significant stress for you. That can definitely lead to exacerbating the emotion felt when playing poker, I know I've certainly been guilty of allowing myself to tilt because I had other stresses and frustrations bothering me while I was playing.

This may be true... one of the only two issues ive ever had that were bad enough to stick with me concerning poker happened in Wisconsin :D

Since its psychoanalyze trihonda time, let me go with this :-) Maybe because you see so much crap in your job and deal with so much stress and let it slide off of you, that subconsciously you get super annoyed when having to deal with crap when you're supposed to be having fun. So it comes down to are you there to have fun or make money? If you're there to have fun, remember it and and don't let that stuff get to you. If it's getting to you too much maybe you should take a break. If you're there to make money, remember that you're gonna have to deal with some inane bs every once in awhile, but its probably worth it for your bankroll in the long term.

I'd have said "Mr. Hellmuth, if you like my card protector so much, I'll trade it for three of your WSOP bracelets."

You're making a big deal over it.

get a thicker skin in regards to distractions.

you sure seem to be a drama magnet* when it comes to this kind of stuff. ]

Agreed with those who have said you need a thicker skin...

Since its psychoanalyze trihonda time.

OK, OK, message received, lol... I need a thicker skin. I need less stress (maybe mental health help according to some). But what we can all agree on is I need more chips... yes, more chips. :)

Honda out. Nappy nap time.. Oh damn, kids just got home from school. :(

After he picked up your card protector, in true Terminator fashion, you should have consulted the following list of possible responses.

  • (ignore him)
  • "It's my card protector, dumb f*ck. You just picked it up like a godd*mn a**hole. Did you want to muck my f*cking cards too?"
  • "All-in" (it's always the appropriate statement at a poker table)
  • "You look with your eyes, not your hands. Your mom taught me that as I was banging her last night"
  • "If you want a closer look, I'll jam it into your eye-socket - otherwise, put it back"

I make an announcement to the table (friendly banter) that if anyone else touches my card protector, I'm going to "punch them squarely in the jaw", and joke that he touched my card protector, and then sucked out runner runner against me... The table laughs, but there's a serious note in my message, that it wasn't cool to grab my sh!t...

But nobody is going to take that seriously tho.

When I am faced with hard poker decisions

Not hard. Easy fold, "nice hand, show the bluff" and whatever additional affable phrases you want to throw out as you move on.

I had announced not to touch my card protector (should I need to announce it?).

I think everyone views this as the Stripes scene:

You are this guy

The players are this dude:

And the bar manager is this guy:

My quick advice, if you are tired and or overworked don't play poker. Spend more time with those kids, that's the most important thing in life and someday they won't be kids. So much better than hanging out with d-bags in a bar. Wait for a good home game.

FYP. :)

Solid advice, but kids were heading to bed... We all just got done with a karate class, I was too pumped after sparring to sleep. Headed to the bar, which is literally 3 minutes from my house. Felt like playing.

The chip protector thing wasn't something that poker tilted (or life tilted me) for more than a few seconds. As I stated, I moved on pretty quickly. Was thinking more on the possible ways to extract value from the read on dude's bluff, which he did show (bonus).

The first guy didn't tilt me one bit, because I got my money in good. I flopped aces up, and he turned a "flush draw". Then rivered the flush. NH GG, Rebuy. If I'd donked my chips by making a bad decisions, then I'd be more concerned. The reason I joked around with the table about punching the next guy, was a friendly way to let people know that it was bad etiquette. I didn't cause a big uproar and scowl and say "I'll effing punch the next guy who....". Besides, there was another person who was also felted in that first hand, and he was probably more tilted than I.

I thought it was poor form the second guy to grab my card protector off my cards while involved in a serious hand, but I didn't over react at the table. The dealer (and table) seemed more upset that I was. But yes, at the time, it was distracting, and I certainly don't like people taking my card protector off my cards, just so they can look at it. However, it was an overall friendly table, and others chided dude for interrupting the hand/grabbing my card protector, etc... I just sighed, mucked, and said "very nice play sir" to the guy who bluffed me. Then I proceeded to focus on the next hand. Didn't seem like a ton of drama at the time. Just an interesting topic, should someone touch your card protector or chips, or whatever?

This was meant as a discussion on whether people thought this was an example of poor etiquette and what they'd do in this circumstance. I'm sure my level of fatigue tarded up the whole thread from the get go. It wasn't intended as a life-coaching session... However, I'm flexible and open to the thread derail on ways to improve my life. Fire away! :)

ps. insert taking little blue pill jokes here ^
