Board Gamers, show us your loot! (4 Viewers)

Given it was so long ago....I don't have many photos of Live-Sized Kill Dr. Lucky in digital format. As the moderator, if you won, I'd take your photo killing Dr. Lucky, played by Toivo.

I debated on the G.A.H. kickstarter. I decided eventually that it was too much $$. Glad you are enjoying it though.

What are your favourite “house rules” for board games? (Similar to 72 game or SB game in poker).

I don't house rule many games. Some, however, need them. I have some slight modifications to Union Pacific to keep the public shares from locking up. I think the player who does worst should roll the die in Quacks of Quedlinburg. And I remove the Exposed Lord card from Lords of Waterdeep, especially for the 3p game. That's about all I can think of off the top of my head.

Good day at the thrift store today. Brand new copy of Carcassonne with River and Abbot expansions for $4. And Disney Codenames for $2.50 (used but looks to be complete). I already had Carcassonne, but not with the Abbot, so now I've got an extra for my game collection at work.

There are quite a few, but these are the ones that have gone over well in conventions...
  • Combat Monopoly. It makes the game quite enjoyable when all the smaller players can jump the big player, but war is expensive so you must pick your battle carefully.
  • Axis and Allies Expanded Tech. Six tech tables instead of one, each with a separate focus (because Soviets never need "Super Subs", or anything Naval).
  • Axis and Allies US Reluctant Involvement. The US does not get to join the battle until attacked or they achieve a certain die roll. It places Japan in a tough spot. First strike vs US and incur their wrath, or focus on war in Asia while the US slowly builds up (US player only collects 1/2 income when not at war).
  • Axis and Allies Double Blind. 2 boards with a wall dividing the two. You may only see enemy forces on the front lines, or with a spy (paying IPC's top get a few seconds of peeking at the opponent's board). Haven't done this one since the invention of the cellphone camera, but you would have to ban them.
  • Robo Rally Football. The robots team up for a game on the factory floor. Needs an even number of players (never an issue at conventions). Hint: the bot with the ball is about to get f*****-up.
  • Robo Rally Unlimited Lives. It's no fun to be done after 3 lives.

I couldn't think of any big "in game" rules that I house rule.
During setup, I may house rule something that will provide more choices - specifically starting powers.
ie: Terraforming Mars, instead of two starting companies to choose from, deal out 3 or 4.

Played my German copy of Palaces of Carrara. There is a Game Found campaign up for the 2nd edition. It changes a lot of agree of scoring, and I'm not sure it's better. More like a lateral move.

Just watched a review of this. Looks pretty nice! At first glance I thought it was a point salad type of game, which I'm okay with but not really excited about. But then I saw that the mechanisms are actually much simpler than I was expecting, but still with a lot of interaction between the moving parts. That's the kind of stuff I like - "simple elegance".

That's why I'm a big fan of the game. A couple easy mechanisms exploited to their fullest.

Just came across this thread.

Long time lover of games, and have worked professionally in the game industry since 2014 for a few different publishing and distribution companies. There’s a non-zero percent chance I’ve encountered some of you at major cons over the last several years. :)

Personal favorites include a lot of that upper shelf stuff; namely heavier things like most of Lacerda’s work, Food Chain Magnate, Scythe, Rising Sun, etc. Though most recently my regular group played through the full legacy campaign for My City, so we’re all over the place. I’ve been meaning to get Coffee Traders from Capstone learned & played for several weeks now but hasn’t happened yet. Maybe this week?!

Anyway. Cool to see a thread for this particular brand of degeneracy.

Trickerion collectors edition and Anachrony as well. I see you too have fine taste.

If I like a thing, I don't do it half-way. And Mindclash makes some great stuff. :)
I haven't had a chance to try Cerebria from them yet; anything that skews towards fully or even partially co-op is usually a tougher sell for my tastes, but it sure is gorgeous.

Anybody get some good games for Xmas?

I got Splendor. Haven't played it yet, but love it already b/c it comes with chips

Congrats! Splendor is nearly a modern staple.
If you end up enjoying this flavor of stripped down engine building I can definitely recommend Century: Spice Road (or if fantasy is more your taste Century: Golem Edition is the same game with different art/theme), and then subsequently its sequels (Eastern Wonders and A New World) which add some additional mechanisms to the mix. Each can be played alone or combined together in any combination (1+2, 1+3, 2+3, or 1+2+3). It's a cool system that handles popular mechanisms in straight forward ways, like the engine building in Spice Road, then pick up & deliver in EW, and worker placement in ANW.

I adore Splendor because it does one thing and does it well, and delivers the gameplay in a simply beautiful presentation, here meaning not just the artwork (which is in fact beautiful) but also the inclusion of the gem chips for a wonderfully tactile experience.

Thanks for the recommendations! I'll check them out.

Just played Splendor for the first time this Christmas! Not one of my top 10 games, but it has a pretty easy learning curve that non-gamers should be able to quickly learn.

I got this gem, Ride the Rails. Economic game about stocks in train companies. Super simple ruleset, but very challenging gameplay. You need to work with others that share your stocks to make certain rail companies expand efficiently, but also try to out compete everyone. I've played a couple cube rails type games, and I like this one the best of the ones I've played.

Finally got Coffee Traders to the table tonight after having bought it several months ago. Dang, this was great. If you’re into heavier stuff with lots of interlocking/interdependent system, this is worth a look.

Wondering if I have a big enough table.....
It's definitely a beast space-wise! I think the only singular main board in a game that I own that's larger might be Feudum, but it's close. This one definitely has the largest player boards, though! ...except maybe Alchemists, but that one is a three-piece 3D construct, so it doesn't count the same  :ROFLMAO:

Star Wars Rebellion...

At least it's just the 2 big boards for the most part.

Trickerion is a hog too.

Yeah, those are both in my library and are pretty large actually. And so is War of the Ring (yet unplayed, rip )

Splendor has been a family favorite here.

My new holiday game was Great Western Trails 2nd edition. I own the original and find it to be an almost perfect game for me. Hits on all cylinders. I wasn't planning on buying the 2nd edition, but a new FLGS opened nearby and I wanted to buy something to show some support. Got it to the table for a four player game and I enjoyed the improvements/tweaks.

Coffee traders looks amazing. I've been trying to resist buying it with so many other games on the shelf begging to get played. It looks like the crunchy kind of game I'm going to love. It will make it into the collection eventually.
