I may be wrong, but I thought there was a chip design app that used the hat & cane. I assumed he put his edge spot design on that app for something he wanted done on cards mold blanks. Just like when I designed my custom chips I used the CPC tool. I didn't take his post as saying the the new mold was hat & cane.

Honestly, I have no interest in a hat and cane mold on ceramic chips from Tina. I do have interest in new original molds from Tina.

Same..Tina told me it’ll be another month for the new mold and I agree, I like the card molds better anway. Pulling the trigger! Here is my final… I think. This is my first full custom set.

So are you confirming that the hat & cane are just part of the design app you're using? That's not the new Tina mold? And did she give you any indication what the new mold might look like?

That’s just the Paulson design tool on PCF. Not the new Tina mold. No idea what it will look like but I’m assuming it’s something related to top hat and cane. Her English is bad so not really sure.
 
Anyone have any experience with getting early production from a "new mold"...?

I 'just" placed an order last week with Tina, and would consider delaying her production to use this new mold - but would would want to be reasonably certain the output was going to be OK...

Seems to me that with new molds, chip edges SHOULD be pretty squared / not rolled over - and mold image itself crisper, but maybe not?

As others have said related to Tina's company coming out with a THC "copy", I think I would NOT purchase that out of respect to Paulson, et al. On the other hand if this is "just" a top hat, then I see it as more of a tribute, like what so many do with their chip inlays, etc. and might be inclined to go with it... Again, assuming quality control, etc with a new mold can be proven..?

@SmockKnives - As to colors, etc. If color gets into the corners of the cards mold, why might it not get into the top hat..? Or do you mean if it DID have a cane, the small area being filled in a cane would be problematic, whereas the "hat portion" would not?

The hat is more open like the card molds. The cane itself is very narrow and I'm not sure if the color could get down in there. I don't know the exact process they use but I've done a lot of color development in other industries and it just looks a little concerning. Maybe not, I'd like to see some test prints to see how it turns out.

Although I'm looking at some card molds I have here and the circle groove on her chips have color in them so maybe it's not an issue.

I would agree. I would rather see a tribute top hat and no cane instead of a direct copy. But that's just me.

I'm in this camp, at least until I see what it looks like. Not all that interested. I'll get Paulson chips if I want THC or RHC.

As far as the color getting into a cane goes, would the cane be narrower than the debossed ring on the cards mold chips? I've never seen any problem with color getting in there.

Not sure I agree with this. I think the target market for custom clay chips at $2-5 each and the target market for 40 cent Chinese ceramics don't really intersect. Not saying there aren't a lot of people here with both, but just that more clay chip availability isn't going to cut into the cheap chip market very much.

Maybe @justincarothers should do a survey post asking if people would prefer a top hat tribute mold or a top hat and cane copy mold? If Tina is going to make a new mold, I'd rather see it be something people want. Justin, you do a lot of the group buys, maybe she would take your input into consideration? I personally would rather see a tribute mold than a direct copy. Just my 2 cents trying to be helpful.

I suspect if it's only a few weeks out that it's already been decided what it's going to look like.
 
Bah. If they are going to do it, just go the full monty and do it. It's just a ceramic chip.

From what I understand, Paulson (or whatever the actual company name is) doesn't even produce their clay chips in the USA.
