I saw 2024 custom hof voting. Was excited to see Lucky Dog! Then I realized it was a diff one than the one I thought. So I did a quick search to see if the Lucky Dog's I love were already HOF'ed.

Search resulted in seeing them up for selection in 2022 here https://www.pokerchipforum.com/thre...hip-set-hof-voting-thread.97910/#post-2039272. I was definitely in the minority, as the results had those Lucky Dog's as the 2nd least. Okay, not everyone's style, I get it.

But then I see that it was an absolute runaway with The Ranier Room

And while I wouldn't normally break the unwritten rule of writing about others' chips, I feel like it's okay here since there is overwhelming love for The Rainier Room - I expect most people to reply, explaining to me why they're head and shoulders above others.

I like the custom set, sure, but HoF worthy? I don't think remotely close. I'm not even a chipper - I can't tell you wtf A2S14/8 means, I generally can't tell you what older chips look like or where they're from, etc. But 1 look at The Rainier Room, and they felt so familiar. I get that nothing can really be unique anymore these days, but these felt overly familiar.

Maybe you'll say it's a stretch. Maybe you'll say, red quarter is normal with cali colors. The spots on the blue $1 isn't that close. There's only so many colors you can place on a yellow $5.

I say you can't get much closer to a tribute.

With how much onus the HoF committee places on originality or executing pieces of a tribute magically well, I just don't get how these are HoF customs. Cool chips, personal to the owner/region, and popular mix of colors. Check, check, check, but that feels like a pretty sterile/standardized formula.

Imo it's a semi tribute that isn't a real tribute with personal theme. Which is still cool and looks great, but also is a dime a dozen regarding concept and implementation.

I don't think it's strange for people to have differing opinions, but I was a bit shocked to see this one be the far and away #1. So, tell me folks! Was 2022 just a down year? Or am I crazy to not have these in my personal upper echelon of customs?

I appreciate your sentiment and see where you're coming from but I don't see it. The $5 is the only thing that may be close, but there's only so many color combos that look good with a canary or DG yellow base when it comes to CPC.

The Hall of Fame is meant to be fun and I don't take it seriously, but that said, The Athenian Owl Club got robbed.

Ya I'm not taking it serious, but the only threads I regularly engage in and enjoy are this and the BS thread. Mostly because it sparks conversation and I get to see opposing viewpoints, which is the best.

Same thing as my "hot take" on the Detroit Jacks and IGs.

Which by the way, for all the love, I have yet to see objective feedback supporting the DJs  :ROFLMAO: I was looking for some great insights, but my personal conclusion was mfers be crazy and overpaid, and now forum wide we need to keep those prices supported/up. I finally got the privilege to play with a set in person as well, and meh.

Thinking this time around enough people will tell me I'm nuts and that every custom has a chip that looks close enough to something to be considered semi tribute.

Folks here are too obsessed with $5 chips and way over order/value vs $25 or higher denominations.

(I'm just salty because I went down the black hole of denom breakdown threads and upped my $5 quantities on my CPC orders for the 3rd time... damn you all. LOL)

Now they do a little bit sure. But at the time they were pretty “groundbreaking” for CPC. Hence I think hof is more like a timeline and shows the evolution. Can’t really compare the 1st sets in vs the last for the most part imo because they are different things.

I have been quite taken back at times with what sets are popular around here. The voting in the thread you are referring to, though I would have ranked them different (w/Athenian Owl first) is still fairly representative of my personal taste.

Cartoonish looking inlays are an immediate turn off for me. Thats just me being honest. Obviously there are alot of members here that disagree of that preference which is proven by a multitude of popular sets based on video games and cartoons. My vision is for chips to have a certain level of sophistication. Though I truly respect your preferences...I just don't see what you see.

I mean…..

The upper denoms are literally barriesque (imo). For all the complaints around vibrancy and the kids these days with bright colors and so on - there’s no flow, consistency, the chip set doesn’t tell a story, I don’t think there’s progression, etc.

It’s just, let’s throw together some crazy high level spots and colors and have fun.

Which again I personally love that, and I understand the timeline factor - just vehemently surprised that THIS chipset is what the voting PCF population by far and away felt was the best just 2 years ago.

I used to think and prefer 2 racks of $5 is enough, but since then 3 racks of $5 is my preference and 4th rack is nice to have

I still prefer 3racks of $5 + 2racks of $25 over 4racks of $5 + 1racks of $25 overall

No problem. I love cartoonish inlays if they’re done well. Me, I hate all black inlays! I refuse to vote for one. This is subjective stuff - no need to apologize for opinions.
I'm just waiting for someone to post that they hate pet/animal inlays.. now then we'd be in controversial territory here. ha

But there's definitely something to be said about divisive elements on a mass poll. I think rainier room is a perfect example IMO of a set that isn't necessarily the most exciting, but it does everything so well that no one is turned off by any elements.. and the inlay design is classic enough that the vote wasn't all that surprising to me.

There’s a cooling off period as well before a set is eligible. So the set itself was made quite a while before it was actually up for vote as well as the other sets it was against
That makes way more sense. I can see it a bit now, although I don’t follow closely enough to know where they all fall.

I would say that definitely should have impact, a custom leading the way for others.

People fawned over moonlight, and with good reason. I wonder if Colony Club received similar admiration, as that’s another I find to be eons ahead of others around that time, or rather I would describe the set as “timeless”, despite round black inlays which I know gets some people.

I’m realizing I’d prob pay to own a couple more cpc sets than I thought. Where those colony clubs at…

I hate pet inlays.
... but not your pet inlays, of course.
