Controversial Chip & Poker Opinions (10 Viewers)

The Roman mold is only desirable because it was used on the original Rounders chips and is no longer available to have new chips made on it.

[expecting lots of neg. reactions to this one.]

Back in the day when it was available, my opinion was that it both felt and sounded bad compared to other molds. Still, I liked the look of it, and would be happy to adjust to the feel and sound.

I mean that’s like saying bourbon is only desirable because it tastes great and gets you drunk. Of course those things play a part. I haven’t shuffled or played enough with that mold to know if the feel is good/bad compared to other molds.

You're not wrong. It is not my least favorite ASM/CPC mold, but it's close.

I just realized that out of all of the many poker chip regrets I have, not getting something made on the Roman Mold is not one of them. So thanks for that.

Flame away!

I know I am guilty of wanting what I can’t have. I think it’s human nature.
When I was a kid growing up in Michigan Coors beer was not available East of the Mississippi (unless you knew the Bandit but I digress). People who went out west would often bring back a case of Coors and it was coveted. Now it’s on every store shelf here and nobody drinks it !
Easy now!! "You talking bout my baby... and you know that she is... she's some kind of wonderful!"

How about BOTH of my babies in one pic! Lol

It's more akin to saying Pappy van Winkle is so desirable because it's so expensive you can't get it.
I remember routinely turning down bottles of the stuff when it was sub $100. Hey, it's great Bourbon. Really great. It ain't that great though. [This can be added to "Controversial Whisky and Whiskey Opinions"]

I should say in regards Roman Mold, while it is one of my least favorite, it still is an ASM mold and any proper compression molded clay chip is superior to anything else.

Ben... I'm so disappointed in you... I know I saw you drinking good beer in KC.

Much better analogy. Never bought Pappy either, but I sure won't turn it down if someone offers me a pour...

OMG is it amazing!! Thank you @Windwalker for bringing it to the "Meet in the suite" in Vegas last year. Mostly wasted on someone with my Whiskey pallette.... but amazingly smooth.... enough that I could tell the difference between Pappy a $100ish bottle... well it was by FAR the best I have ever tasted, but blind folded could I tell today? Probably not, so for someone like me on a limited Budget, a nice Kentucky Owl Confescated bottle @ $115 (locally) which I have had would be very similar.

Either way it was an experience that most of us "regular Joes" never get to experience... also not many whiskey drinkers there so um... it also does the trick to get ridiculously wasted. My face post "the Pappy experience"

Or you could simply ask poor @RivieraDanny who volunteered to drive my drunk ass back to the Trop! Lol

For the record I was given these two absolutely beautiful bottles for my Bday this weekend (thank you @Cliff And @Klobberer )
20220914_174558.jpg

I would much rather have those as they are both resonable priced "drinkers" if I owned a bottle of Pappy it would be for looks and EVERYONE that comes over would bug you to Crack it for a pour!

Just like chips... why own it if you aren't going to consume it?

Damn we are off course, OK

Dice chips aren't that bad... IF...
You just left a 14 hour Bender at a 350 plus pound strip club on "1/2 priced top shelf night" THEN and only then are they "not that bad"... ehh I lied, eben then they still suck! Lol

I stumbled onto a bottle of Eagle Rare quite a few years ago. Didn't even know what it was. Just that my wife had complained that the under $15-20 bottles I had been buying gave her a headache, but when she had the better stuff, it didn't. So I'm guessing I probably didn't pay more than $25 for it. About the same as the Knob Creek that I had also been buying. I thought the bottle was cool, so I put in on my bookshelf next to the bottles of some of my favorite beers.

Fast forward several years, and my son's are all into good bourbon. One of them was in my study looking at some poker chips with me, when he looked up and happened to notice the empty bottle. "When did you buy that? That's one of the best bourbons you can get for the price!!!" LOL, as I had no clue.

I can get the Eagle Rare for $32.99 all year long...Enjoy! Curious what you thought about the samples. Two were super funky and if the Calumet 16 doesn't turn you on to sweet oak, there's no hope for you!

"regular Joes"
You’re not a regular Joe. You’re fellow chipper Ben. You’re one of the most optimistic and glass half full personalities on a sometimes heated forum. You’re the proud owner of a massive chip collection. And from what I can tell, you’re welcome at home poker tables across America and probably globally.

Ben book ** Ye Be warned! Absolutely ZERO content that has anything to do with this thread. Feel free to scroll on past!

Having that one now Brian... Oh My Fantastic, warm and smooth... but I kind of expected that when it said 16 YO

I can definitely see what you mean by "sweet oak" are you sure that's not Maple? Lol fantastic pour!

@TX_Golf_N_Poker Eagle Rare is absolutely fantastic, but I am completely content with Buffalo Trace (it's younger brother)

I typed this out, then decided NOT to thread crap anymore... then this

That has to be one of the best, if not best compliments I have ever recieved! Thank You so much!!

People make fun of my "Ben Books" say I wear too much of "my heart on my sleeve" for a public internet forum. But some people trully enjoy reading my long winded post, reach out and say thank you privately whilst others are publically busting my balls. Doesn't matter everyone has a right to scroll on past.

But THANk YOU @khp , truth is we really are just regular "blue collar middle class, regular Joe" folks.

I remember Joe Rogan did a bit one time where he said "you know it's hard getting up on a stage and hoping a bunch if total strangers are going to enjoy and laugh at material you put together for them!" Not sure why that stuck but I apply it when I catch heat from my opinions on a forum. It's ok that we don't all see eye to eye all the time, but these are REAL people in here! Some if the kindest people I have ever met at these meet ups. We play poker with Millionares, doctors, lawyers you name it. People that are much higher up the social ladder than I ever will be... but it doesn't matter when it comes to our amazing hobby. They invite you with open arms into their homes.

Believe it or not, someone you might absolutely dispise on the forum in person could easily become your favorite chipping buddies! It is a magical experience honestly. We don't talk politics, religion, race... I mean we literally play poker with folks of every nationality @krafticus game and it is absolutely beautiful with all that is going on in the world. Call me a glass half full kind of guy... I am, extremely optimistic on the future and what we all can trully achieve... man if the world was just one big ole poker table!

I met a total stranger last year @BootySnatcher aka Rufus. This man drove down from Chicago for a poker meet up with complete strangers. I didn't know the guy from Adam... but had one of the best damn nights ever! We played until 5:30 in the morning that night.

Does any part if that look like two people becoming best friends? Rufus is a well established, soft spoken and extremely intelligent man... I am a giant goof ball from the woods that @ 40 still thinks fart jokes are halarious! Doesn't matter, I wish he was in our monthly game in MD, we literally laugh and cut up for hours everytime we are together.

I can't remember life before PCF, again we gave up all social media long before joining here and don't miss it one bit! You guys have become our friends and family. If you haven't made it to a meet up yet, that is a damn shame... chips are awesome but I would give them.all up for the friends we have made here!

Thank You All for being awesome people! 2023 I can't wait, so many more amazing people to meet and new adventures already planned!

If you are just here for poker chips... Sadly you are missing out on something much larger than silly clay chips!

I think you don't hate oak...pretty sure you don't dig wheat funk. My Makers doesn't have a ton of oak, but does have some wheat funk.

The cost isn't the problem. It's always reasonable when it can be found. My understanding, at least in Texas, is that it's an allocated bottle, so you pretty much have to know somebody to even have the opportunity to buy it. That's why my son was surprised to see it. But back when I bought it, it was on the shelf and the guy in the liquor store recommended it when I asked about good, but reasonably priced bourbon.

Even in my area, which seems to be a desert when it comes to allocated bottles, I can often get a bottle of ER at the local ABC or Total Wine just by asking. Definitely not always, but often.

It's kept in the back, but it seems like it's available enough if you know that you have to ask for it.

I'll give it a try. I literally asked my son a couple of weeks ago, who does have some relationships, to try and find me one. He was unable to.

Just in case some folks weren't aware of this thread since this one has veered way off it's already off topic topic (I know I helped)

PCF Whisk(e)y thang:

https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/official-pcf-whisk-e-y-thread.3763/
Then my "controversial" opinion is that no PCF thread ever stays on topic - we always meander away from the OP sooner or later if the thread doesn't die first.

(Also yes, the whisk(e)y thread is a great one. And tomorrow is a great day for new readers to learn about Fryeday!)

Yeah, I was just getting used to calling him mrfrrfrmfrrfmmr. And just MFer when he took a pot from me.
To be honest I re read my post this morning and said "omg I tagged the totally wrong person!" Tried to edit and tag his old user name and was unable... went to the meet up in PA post and looked at the attendees and no @mrrhjr but @BootySnatcher was on there... hmm wait a minute. I guess some people can pull the right string round here... I would still change my name to @benfolds5s if it was possible! Lol

Let’s get this thread back on track - lol. Here’s some controversy:

I absolutely HATE cigar smoke at the table. (gives me a raging headache)

The worst is the occasional, or non-smoker sitting next to you that picks the biggest cigar and nurses the fckn thing for an hour and half.

Aaannnd GO…. :ROFLMAO:

Oh hell yeah.
When it comes to smoke, I’m kind of a weirdo. I’m a part time cigarette smoker - I’ll have a few cigarettes if I’m drinking with friends who smoke. Or I’ll rip through a whole pack if we’re out by the fire. But then I’ll go a week without smoking any at all. So I’m a social smoker. But when I’m not actually smoking myself, I can’t stand second hand smoke. And the very worst second hand smoke is cigar smoke. Good god cigar smoke is nasty. But on the bright side, it’s always outdoors and it floats away. I mean, nobody’s actually smoking cigars or cigarettes indoors these days, right?
