Controversial Chip & Poker Opinions (17 Viewers)

Oh hell yeah.
When it comes to smoke, I’m kind of a weirdo. I’m a part time cigarette smoker - I’ll have a few cigarettes if I’m drinking with friends who smoke. Or I’ll rip through a whole pack if we’re out by the fire. But then I’ll go a week without smoking any at all. So I’m a social smoker. But when I’m not actually smoking myself, I can’t stand second hand smoke. And the very worst second hand smoke is cigar smoke. Good god cigar smoke is nasty. But on the bright side, it’s always outdoors and it floats away. I mean, nobody’s actually smoking cigars or cigarettes indoors these days, right?
I had a crew that all smoked cigars and we had a place that allowed it indoors - it was aweful. Even outdoors, if you have 9 of 10 guys smoking em, it can be unbearable when your crammed around a table.

And I was also a smoker (cigarettes) - lol.

I can enjoy an occasional cigar, they just never really did anything for me. So now, I generally don’t bother.

These guys were very serious about thier cigars (they looked down on Cuban cigars as inferior). They literally had thousands of them, not exaggerating. They would bring Uber nice cigars to try and get me “in” and I just felt they were wasted on me - lol.

Literally burning money. I don’t get it. Just like those $100+ bottles they were talking about above. I’m never gonna tell anybody how to spend their money, but since we’re here to give opinions: people who overspend on luxury consumables are freaking nuts.

Let’s get this thread back on track - lol. Here’s some controversy:

I absolutely HATE cigar smoke at the table. (gives me a raging headache)

The worst is the occasional, or non-smoker sitting next to you that picks the biggest cigar and nurses the fckn thing for an hour and half.

Aaannnd GO…. :ROFLMAO:
In 2022 is this even still a thing? Are there still people who smoke indoors? In a social setting that includes non-smokers? Cigars don't bother me as much as cigs do, but I would definitely not be part of any poker group where smoking indoors is going on. Outdoors - no biggie as long as there is also an indoor option if I get tired of it.

They are few and far between to be sure, normally private - members only type facilities.

There was one venue were we would sometimes host that allowed it indoors. This is what made me hate cigars - lol.

But even outdoors crammed around a table with no breeze can be brutal.

Agreed!

I only overspend on durables.

That includes pretty much every single member of this forum - last I checked, poker chips were definitely not a necessity.

I pay my mortgage, feed my kids, and donate a good bit of money and time to my service organization. I don't mind dropping some of my extra cash on chips, whiskey, traveling to a meetup, etc. I'm not taking it with me, and I'm sure not leaving it to my kids! :bigbucks:

Umm does that mean poker chips are consumables then??? Sorry brother Chris, you know I absolutely LOVE our chips... but I ain't eating them bro!

Also for the record Chris and @Machine BOTH pay ridiculous amounts of money on Ginat Fancy heavy Beers... and I absolutely love when they decode to share them woth me. Not sure I can stomach paying $30 - $100 for one Giant beer, but I definitely enjoy helping consume them! Yummy!!!

It's always a good idea to tell other people what they should do with their excess money. In the same vein, it's also a great idea to tell them how to best enjoy their poker chips.
Nobody’s done that yet. Just sharing opinions on the opinion thread.

Ceramic chips suck. They look gross, feel gross, and are overpriced for what they are. Tiki kings and Dia de Los Muertos are the worst examples, and I can’t stand them. They are glorified dice chips with pictures printed on them. I heard so many people on here rave about them that I got samples to see what it was all about. Glad that I did, as I was horrified at how terrible they were.

@MegaTon44

Dan, care to weigh in?

Humans are consumable too. By far and by definition. Mortals.
"Death suits have no pockets" (Greek proverb)
"No currency accepted in the other world" (Greek song)
So, spend the money as you wish.

Haha. @coolguy101's opinion about ceramics is not too controversial. I'd venture to say that a majority of the most seasoned chippers on this site generally don't love ceramics. Aside from a few custom sets that were very well done, and maybe a chipco set or two that are special to them, they could take them or leave them.

I would pose the challenge to @coolguy101 to play with 43mm hybrids for an extended session and see if his opinion softens. They won't have the pinage of decent clays, but as a budget-friendlier option, they are pretty solid.

Have you played with the range of Matsui options? They feel very premium

The thing is that good ceramics aren’t bad. If you compare them to clays, sure, they’re gonna lose. I like ceramics and even though I’ve bashed RHCs until I’m blue in the face, I’d still choose decent condition RHCs over ceramics every time. But that doesn’t make ceramics bad.
Good ceramics are infinitely better than dice chips. That’s just a fact. Nobody has to like ceramics. And I’m all for ranting about something you don’t like. But let’s temper it with a measure of honesty.

The thing about chips is that their value is stored in them… Unless you use them multiple times per week for years, they’re not going to wear appreciably. And if the past decade is any yardstick, the value of quality chips will either keep pace with inflation or increase. So you can look at them more like an interest-free loan. #MOAR #amirite

I'm sorry sir, that sounds more like a popular opinion. You need to post this in a different thread.
