Have we finally reached market saturation?? (7 Viewers)

Great thread!

Best thread ever!!!

Everyone should read this thread, it’s the best out there!!!

I can’t believe this thread is unread by some!!
Please excuse my amusement since I find it more interesting than posts that have nothing to do with the state of the market.

I collect baseball cards .... Everything is down.

I have a bunch of baseball cards: a smattering from the 1980's but most from the early 1990s'. I recently did some analysis on them to see if they had any value, and for the most part determined they're not worth the paper their printed on. A LOT of cards were printed during that time so scarcity will likely be less of a thing.

In addition, it seems to me their worth (or lack thereof) relates to the fact that society has moved on somewhat from valuing such things. Why look to a baseball card when instead, all the information/photos it might contain (and more) are just a few clicks away on one's phone?

I'm not discounting the nostalgia that baseball/sports cards might provide and know there are some (in shrinking numbers?) who still value them. it's just that nostalgia alone is no longer enough to add value to something in a society that demands instant gratification and instant information.

Sorry for the lament/derail...

I agree with this.

The ridiculous print runs of the early 90s crushed the hobby for many years, and we are seeing that happen again now.

I find quality chips are quite liquid… if you list them at fair prices. Often sell and “settle” in hours, sometimes minutes.

Not liquid if you shoot for the moon. Same as if you offer a stock at a fixed price above market, instead of taking what the market will pay.

I missed this originally in the firestorm. That's a fair point.

Part of it must be that the chips that go quickly are out of sight immediately, while the ones that are lingering are on the classifieds page getting bumped to the top. Recency bias etc.

Try turning notifications on for new threads in classifieds. Most classified threads are worth checking at most once.

Train Wreck thread 4 ever! Best shitposts ever AINEC.

But yeah, on topic, the really hard to find stuff is still hard to find. Demand still outweighs supply and people have their stuff locked down tight, myself included. Best way to shake some stuff loose is to have some trade bait, but even then, be prepared to take a bath depending on what you're after.

RHC's have been replaced by cards molds as entry level stuff. There's old Chip Room RHC's that are amazing deals for value that have been sitting for weeks because people would rather have tributes/copies/customs than casino chips with bad inlays. Just the nature of the beast now.

How soon before we see cards mold mixed sets?

Maybe we should have separate classifieds sections for cards molds/customs/tributes, Paulsons RHC/THC, and TRKs. It’s disorienting seeing $10-50/chip listings next to 35 cents/chip sets and I’m sure Tina’s production range will only continue to expand.

Keep the reproduction Rolexes away from the real ones or newer members will assume there is no difference except in price.

This is interesting because I couldn’t care less about card molds but just to make an academic counterpoint here, even though chipping (and all collectible markets) are somewhat irrational and have certain Veblen goods etc., presumably there’s some amount of logic to prices and caveat emptor - users should conclude that maybe there’s something materially (pun intended) different about 30¢ Tina crap and $30/chip TRKs.

Not a bad idea. More practical solution would be to add a filtering option by product.

Learn your manners. I am a respected member here. Check my classified history. I started this thread as a question and not to restructure the classified structure or current norms.

I honestly do not care how long you've been here, that doesn't give you a right to spout nonsense about me.

You made a comment that I was trying to tear down the system when I did no such thing. Commenting that the market is down for all collectibles has nothing to do with the system. You made assumptions about what I was saying without reading.

Perhaps you would like to clarify what you were trying to say? How has anything I said been an attempt to tear down a system? What am I trying to restructure in classifieds?

The ENTIRE premise of my post was the opinion that there wasn't necessarily anything saturated with the chip market specifically, but ALL markets as a whole. I did not come here to change any structure or norm. You either read someone else's comments and attributed it to me or something else.

Hmm. I don't visit PCF as frequently as in the past. But if this thread is any indication, things remain the same.

1. A thread topic that's been beaten to death many times over somehow needs to be posted again.
2. A noob gets really enthusiastic about the topic and posts endlessly. Because, you know, with a month of experience in the hobby, they've got some really unique insight to share.
3. Old cranky PCFers pile on and shit all over noob.

Moral of the story. The market is really only active if you're selling mustard chips. Specifically, mustard roulettes.

You're right, you haven't visited frequently. Mustards were SO June 2023.

So if I make a meme that quotes someone's homophobic comment. And it gets a bunch of likes and lols.

But then that homophobic comment and all following responses are removed from the site (the original comment definitely should have been removed, I'm not arguing), do I get to keep those likes and lols for my reaction score? :ROFLMAO:

This came up recently on facebook. Probably the biggest gay ally I know, who also happens to be a crass, obnoxious new yorker, got called out for using cocksucker as an insult. This might be one of those "i'm not gay, so my opinion doesn't matter" things, but I'm inclined to agree that by today's standards, using that word as an insult probably is homphobic. I try not to use it for that reason.

What's your definition of noob? If it's having an account on PCF for less than x time, then yeah I'm a noob.

Otherwise, I've been playing poker professionally and running poker games for the better part of 15 years. I've lived on the east coast, the west coast, and Europe post Black Friday, all for the game. I'm confident I have had more hours at a poker table handling various different chips than a good majority of people here. I've been active on many other poker related forums for decades, but I recently came here to buy some chips I was interested in. My knowledge of the hobby and origins of various chips is limited, but I am learning. I am 38 and 'retired' from poker and don't need to work thanks to the game.

One thing is certain -- I am not phased by an overweight old dude with a saxophone around his neck telling me to 'respect my elders' because his post count is higher than mine.

I liked this to try to restore your score, not because i like it.

Yup, now that Card Molds and soon TinaHC are seen all over the place and for really good prices, the RHCs are being left behind. TCR RHCs are out there in high quantities, with there historically being a huge emphasis on Mint(TM) chips, typically appealing to those who are new to the hobby, those who jump from set to set, and/or those who believe they can resell or have no intention to play with the chips, etc., although there are obviously a high number of people who just love the chips of course.

Mentioning that because when the more used stuff comes about, it can be relatively quite cheap if you're not a stickler on condition since they'll see felt. There are deals to be had, they just have evolved from the lock-down era when most of the Mint/NM shaped/leaded shit got gobbled up and locked away. Example is the Lake Elsinore sale. TCR RHCs and their associated IHCs (compared to the high denoms), both with boring inlays, typically went for relatively way more than these leaded/shaped THC Cali chips, where I suspect condition was the main factor by a large margin.

Yeah that was an interesting sale, wasn't it? I was probably never in because Cali colors aren't my thing. But the THC $1s were total bike tires, so I was out. I'm not a conditon whore, but when they're THAT worn, they don't handle or shuffle well, in my experince.

Sorting was definitely necessary but worth it. Combined with <insert banned guy's name>'s edging they came out great, although that is admittedly a post-sale/hindsight realization.

The last few real points
3. Prejudice and bigotry arose by a privileged class - because you know, insults have to be thrown out over such an important topic like this
4. People that care about those things call them out and request they stop, and are instead insulted further by increased amounts of prejudice and bigotry.

It’s not lost on a lot of us that the complaining threads - about chip prices, flippers, Thechiproom, old men, poker rooms, anything that’s “not like it used to be” are started by younger newer members that don’t know much about chipping. So it’s hilarious when you post yet another thread complaining about some stupid shit and then later on in it post a meme of an older guy yelling at clouds.
Complaining about people complaining in a complaint thread. Just classic.
