Have we finally reached market saturation?? (6 Viewers)

This came up recently on facebook. Probably the biggest gay ally I know, who also happens to be a crass, obnoxious new yorker, got called out for using cocksucker as an insult. This might be one of those "i'm not gay, so my opinion doesn't matter" things, but I'm inclined to agree that by today's standards, using that word as an insult probably is homphobic. I try not to use it for that reason.
Feel like I am often telling new players at our place, upon their first visit or two, that under no circumstances shall ****suckers be disparaged in my home. They are a gift from God, and shall be treated as such; regardless of gender.

What a strange turn this thread took today

I have sold a couple of chips in the last few months o_O ... was going to post some comments based on my recent experience and the ongoing sales environment... but given the turn of events in this thread, not sure if I should, or perhaps start a new thread :confused

Would like to hear your thoughts - whether in this thread or a new one. You have a pretty unique POV on the topic.

perhaps start a new thread
Godspeed, Ken.

Train Wreck thread 4 ever! Best shitposts ever AINEC.

But yeah, on topic, the really hard to find stuff is still hard to find. Demand still outweighs supply and people have their stuff locked down tight, myself included. Best way to shake some stuff loose is to have some trade bait, but even then, be prepared to take a bath depending on what you're after.

RHC's have been replaced by cards molds as entry level stuff. There's old Chip Room RHC's that are amazing deals for value that have been sitting for weeks because people would rather have tributes/copies/customs than casino chips with bad inlays. Just the nature of the beast now.
From reading the recent new members that have joined over the last year or 2, most (90%) seem to only have a budget of $200-300 per set so Card molds easily become their entry level set.

Only maybe 1 out of 10 continue to progress further into the rabbit holes and move on to Paulson / Premium plastic

CM can be Paulson look alike but they can never replace the real thing in the long run, having said that I can only afford the $2 RHC chip and not the next price level beyond that so I can see the appeal of using CM version of those $10k Clay set

p.s. I not discriminating against CM, i myself started the journey via CM myself

As a related sidebar observation, one might conclude that some (many?) of those 90% might not have stuck around at all had a cheap / accepted / plentiful / customizable ceramic option not been present.

When I first started playing poker, I found chip talk. Then I spent a lot more money on poker chips than I couldn't really afford. Then we started a family and I haven't really played poker for 12 years, except for fun with family. Now that my son likes to play with us, I checked in here because I had some recuperation time from surgery and I enjoy looking at beautiful sets. Everyone is just as friendly as I remember. The chip options are a little shocking compared to where things were when I stopped paying attention. But because I own a few sets, I wouldn't be interested in any of the "starting" sets for myself, and that's where most of the variety and options appears to be. Still, even though now I could afford those chips I wanted 12 years ago, they've escalated in price 3-4-5-6-fold. I still like looking at beautiful chips, but I'm not a collector. It seems like there's no middle tier for chips--there's the starter sets that are not the quality I would want, and there's the Paulsons, TRKs, and Matsui's, that seem to me to be inflated price-wise, but...I've been out of it and clearly I don't know the value of things anymore.

@Heather the Matsuis that go for perhaps seemingly inflated prices are from group buys, which of course is where the vast majority of Matsui chips available here have originated from. Same is true for the Abbiati and Bud Jones sets that were GB and NAGB respectively. Apart from that one BJ set though the prices of these chips seem to be close to the original GB price, so I don't think they are inflated at all. If you look at used high end plastic casino sets, they actually tend to be cheaper than what they would have cost back in the late 2000s (especially after accounting for inflation).

Paulson and TRK chips on the other hand have appreciated in value, leaded ones more than others. They have come down from the peak of last year, but still tend to be expensive compared to 10+ years ago.

My gateway into PCF was when I wanted to build a table and all roads seemed to lead to various threads on here.

"Decent" chips were also on the list but my initial budget was extremely naive. When I realised what the limited options were for UKers I splurged to get the minimal I would be happy with - dice chips and 14g slugs falling well short - and went the custom route with PCFs favourite pantomime villain Tina.

If I hadn't got customs I doubt I'd be that regular here, although the table stuff might have just about kept me visiting, but as I'm not alone in the route I took I don't feel too much of a pleb with the chips I did go for.

I'm not ruling out going with fancier top end chips but it's a ways off if I do. I don't count myself as a "chipper" but just someone who enjoys hosting home games and wants to make an extra effort to make them attractive while not making myself destitute

You're right about the Matsui's. In fact, I'm watching the group buy for the Matsui Sands chips, hoping that gets rekindled as I'd like to buy a set. I also think going custom with CPC is comparatively affordable (for me at this point).

Custom CPC is the way to go if you've already got your share of cohesive higher end sets out there.

Re.: Shining:

I sometimes post positive comments about sales… because I think the chips are nice. Or because I think the price is fair. Or both.

Not to mislead potential buyers or to help a friend out.

In truth I barely know any of you, except virtually. I would recognize only one PCF member on the street. (All of his chips are sweet, and he doesn’t gouge people. If he sold anything, I would probably say something positive… because his chips are nice. And his prices are fair.)

I suppose there must be instances of folks posting fake compliments as “shining” or otherwise as dishonest fluffery.

But 99% of the time it’s just because someone likes someone else’s chips. We are all kind of like dogs seeing bones. We start panting and drooling.

So I just don’t see this as at all akin to sales crapping, even if there are rare cases of friends helping friends.

I don’t think friends helping friends is an issue. If that occurred, it’s likely just a one off and irrelevant.

People touting a set that they own in order to maintain a favorable comp is the more common reason, at least in markets for other collectibles.

There’s a big difference between admiring someone’s listing ITT and targeting a beginner with verbiage like “how has this not sold yet?! Great starter set!” on a product that’s clearly priced way above market.
