So I poured the 1792 Full Proof again tonight. I get so much cinnamon now. It’s along the lines of Noah’s Mill, but more proof and not as good. But I do like it.
Wait, did you guys both just open those bottles? If yes, please lmk what it tastes like in 2 weeks!!
FWIW, i wasn't a fan of the 1792s i picked up (small batch, FP, BiB) when i first opened them and for the first few pours. Maybe it's because i've been pouring mostly higher proofs and ECBPs lately, but when i went back to them they tasted much better. The full proof started to pull away from the BiB after the 1/4 mark for me

1792 small batch is one of my go to's everyday bourbons for manhattans, old fashions and even on the rocks - $52 for a 1.75L bottle around here. I have a bottle of the 1792 full proof, haven't cracked it yet. Haven't been able to find the BiB yet.

This place had it for $40 last time i stopped in if you're near there, along with some other reasonable selections.

They also had the sweet wheat but for $100.

shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

;)

That's one of my regular places, I'm right around the corner, the owner is a really nice guy. I didn't see it the last few times I was there, I'll have to stop by again.

As @JeepologyOffroad wrote, the Laphroaig 10 Cask Strengths are absolutely phenomenal. Way, way, way better than the regular 10 and a great value if found it at msrp, which should be between $75/$85. There's plenty around as well, but not everywhere. The one caveat obviously is that one should love peated islay malts as the 10 Cask Stregth is what one would call an extreme of the genre. It is a classic, man!!

I like Lagavulin 9 and 16. And the Laphroaig 10 is a little peatier to me but manageable. But I hear some people claim some of the heavier peat islays is like drinking iodine. I don't like drinking iodine. So where would the Laphroaig 10 CS fit in?

lol, the scotch - bourbon thing made me think of this while I was at work today:

Jokes aside, when I have some extra $$ I will be buying 3 bottles of Scotch. I need to give it another try. I will be reaching out to you scotch drinkers when the time comes for recommendations. For now, lets all enjoy our whiskey boys!!

I'm not sure I would agree with the above statement as the Octomores have the heaviest peat levels available and do not have a heavy iodine profile. I think it is more about the distillery than the peat content. And yes, Laphroaig to me is the distillery with the most iodine. The 10CS basically amplifies the regular 10 profile, so everything is more in your face, even the iodine, which to me, is just a minor part of the flavor profile. But if you want to avoid iodine, the 10CS is the one to avoid.

But it is the same thing as the Ardbegs being tarry, asphalt and rubbery. Yes, they are all those but in a good way and serve as complement to the tropical fruits, lime, etc. Not that different than adding spicy pepper to a dish or salt to a caramel. :p

That's the funniest thing I've seen a while, thank you sir.

Seriously though, drink what you like, but IMNSHO variety is the spice of life, if you're only partaking in just scotch - or just bourbon - or just whiskey..... you're missing out! I'm more of a bourbon drinker at this point, but of the 40ish bottles in my humble collection, only about half are bourbons. I also have about a dozen scotches, 4 Irish whiskeys, and a smattering of ryes, Tennessee & Canadian whiskeys. Not all scotches are peat bombs that taste like band-aids (I'm soooo using that one with my scotch buddies thanks @Klobberer lol). I wouldn't recommend a bourbon guy starting with an Islay Laphroaig cask strength, but there are lots of Highland/Speyside offerings that I think many bourbon drinkers would thoroughly enjoy right out of the gate. I went to a Glenmorangie tasting event this past Sunday, all 4 selections were excellent (love their Lasanta red label):

What I find very interesting is that each dram has it's own little cult following and each has it's perks and downsides. In my experience, the Bourbons/Ryes have the biggest range of offerings in terms of price/availability. You can get a decent bourbon for $30-$40 a bottle, and supply is typically spot on for most. What I would call the mid-grade to lower premiums (say $50-$85) seems to be what drives many of the "hunters" (including myself) - there are some great bottles in this range, but you often have to work a bit to get them (or have good connections). Then the premium & secondary market is absolutely fucking crazy right now, especially in non-controlled states. Scotches are a little different, while I guess you could say there are some value offerings like Dewars (meh), IMHO the decent bottles start in the $55-$60 range and top out around $100. But I find I can almost always get these bottles at pretty much anytime I want. I may have to go to a certain store to get them, but if I want a nice bottle of Balvenie, Glenmorangie, Glendronach, Glenfiddich, Highland Park, Laphroaig, etc. I very rarely have to hunt. Even the premium scotches seem to be much more available than the premium bourbons/ryes . Except maybe around the holidays, I can always get a bottle of Glendronach 21 for around $240. If I want a bottle of George Stagg, it's either a crazy hunt or I'm paying $600 for it.

Just my 2¢ for a snowy Jersey morning lol

Got off work early, stopped by the store hoping for a midday miracle. There was only an EHT small batch. For the 1st time since I've been hunting, I walked on by... (I have one open with 6 back ups). That said, I am proud of myself!
I stopped by my mega-liquor chain after work, similar story to yours. Wednesday is their delivery day. Nothing new. Still a Prisoner, a Goodwood, and a Kentucky Owl to be had if I feel like splurging. But I didn't.

Edit - also a regular Joseph Magnus too. I'd probably get a Cigar Blend if I saw it. At worst, I could sell it at cost to one of you fine folks here without much difficulty.

I would buy that cigar blend in a heartbeat!

OK! So, as many of you know I have been trying to get through a lot of good bottles in order to get to some great bottles, and then some extraordinary bottles. The Russel's Reserve, Wyoming Whiskey, Larceny etc, are cool; but I want more!!

So, here are my most anticipated sealed bottles:

Angel's Envy 2020 Cask Strength
