lol, the scotch - bourbon thing made me think of this while I was at work today:

Jokes aside, when I have some extra $$ I will be buying 3 bottles of Scotch. I need to give it another try. I will be reaching out to you scotch drinkers when the time comes for recommendations. For now, lets all enjoy our whiskey boys!!
That's the funniest thing I've seen a while, thank you sir.
Seriously though, drink what you like, but IMNSHO variety is the spice of life, if you're only partaking in just scotch - or just bourbon - or just whiskey..... you're missing out! I'm more of a bourbon drinker at this point, but of the 40ish bottles in my humble collection, only about half are bourbons. I also have about a dozen scotches, 4 Irish whiskeys, and a smattering of ryes, Tennessee & Canadian whiskeys. Not all scotches are peat bombs that taste like band-aids (I'm soooo using that one with my scotch buddies thanks
@Klobberer lol). I wouldn't recommend a bourbon guy starting with an Islay Laphroaig cask strength, but there are lots of Highland/Speyside offerings that I think many bourbon drinkers would
thoroughly enjoy right out of the gate. I went to a Glenmorangie tasting event this past Sunday, all 4 selections were excellent (love their Lasanta red label):
What I find very interesting is that each dram has it's own little cult following and each has it's perks and downsides. In my experience, the Bourbons/Ryes have the biggest range of offerings in terms of price/availability. You can get a decent bourbon for $30-$40 a bottle, and supply is typically spot on for most. What I would call the mid-grade to lower premiums (say $50-$85) seems to be what drives many of the "hunters" (including myself) - there are some great bottles in this range, but you often have to work a bit to get them (or have good connections). Then the premium & secondary market is absolutely fucking crazy right now, especially in non-controlled states. Scotches are a little different, while I guess you could say there are some value offerings like Dewars (meh), IMHO the decent bottles start in the $55-$60 range and top out around $100. But I find I can almost
always get these bottles at pretty much anytime I want. I may have to go to a certain store to get them, but if I want a nice bottle of Balvenie, Glenmorangie, Glendronach, Glenfiddich, Highland Park, Laphroaig, etc. I very rarely have to hunt. Even the premium scotches seem to be much more available than the premium bourbons/ryes . Except maybe around the holidays, I can always get a bottle of Glendronach 21 for around $240. If I want a bottle of George Stagg, it's either a crazy hunt or I'm paying $600 for it.
Just my 2¢ for a snowy Jersey morning lol
