NOOB Question for everyone…

How do you go about coming up with what a ‘good’ price is for any particular bottle once you’ve decided you’d like to try it? I’m genuinely shocked at how much prices can differ store to store. I’m sure that’s not a unique situation?
Virginia, and other states, have ABC stores and post prices. So will the big search engines. I usually check my military liquor store first. In the end, how much will prices vary- is it worth it to spend your time digging around?

I have a google sheet that I use to track prices on my favorite & WTB bottles, I try to update it every couple of months when I pop into a store. There an app called BoozeApp that I use as well, I find that's usually pretty accurate for initial ballpark numbers.

Not only store to store, but prices can vary based on time of year in the same store. I find that prices are often 15% to 25% higher during the holiday season (November through January) in some stores. Buy your holiday gift bottles now if you can!

Here's an example...one of the bottles I bought to start this journey a few weeks ago was 1792 Full Proof. I checked five stores that are all within 10-15min of my house. Lowest price was $52. Highest was $65. That's a fairly large range for stores in such a small radius (IMHO). So I spent a few days comparing several other bottles and it was the same...bottles in the $40-$70 range varying by as much as $10-$15 between these five shops. But the rub was that the cheapest prices weren't all at the same store. One store seemed to come out as most expensive, but the other four stores each came out at least $10 cheaper on at least one of the bottles I checked.

Is $10-15 life-altering money? Of course not. But when I decide I want to try ___ and find it in a shop I'm in, was just wondering if there's an easy way to know if the price is at least reasonably close to what I should expect to be able to find if I look around, that's all.

Thanks to all above on BoozApp...will check it out!

Step 1: find others that are willing to share.
Step 2: set your price the same way you decide which poker chips you want to buy. If the taste and the price are equal, it's a buy. If the price is more than you would spend, don't buy.
Step 2.5: like chips, you can shop around and get better deals. You can strike up a relationship with a small retailer who might be willing to haggle with a well-known patron. Bourbon really isn't much different from poker chips.
Step 3: Once you bought a bottle, share it with other friends who express an interest. Thus continuing the cycle.

as other's have set, start with states where the price is set by the govt, that will give you a baseline but that doesn't mean that is the lowest price. I have purchased stuff in MD that was cheaper than in VA for example.

Next look at online retailers. Sometimes you can find something online that with shipping is still the best price. Honestly just search on google shopping. You can even see a lot of local stores if their inventory is online.
