That’s just it, straight whiskey seems intimidating
I can’t speak for anyone else and everyone comes to it in a different way. When my younger brother wanted to introduce his roommates I got them a bottle of green spot (Irish whisky) and that eased them into it properly. That was 10 years ago and those fools are aficionados now.

The picture last night of @detroitdad is how I think of whisky. Coming down from a day or a relaxing drink with the guys. It burns initially but that smooth come down I really love.

Is there some other type of alcohol you drink and like or is it wine or beer?

I’m a vodka and club soda person myself. If you drink any of that straight or close to straight I don’t see whisky being a bad experience. If you want to start jack or crown and coke that gives you part of the taste. I still think a green spot or Jameson's and a little ice will do you right.

+1

I agree with Irish to start, put it on the rocks and step up and get a bottle of redbreast to start as well, blows Jameson out of the water, pricier but still good value around 65 a fifth.
If you start with swill you will never ditch the coke. Not that Jameson is swill but better can be had for just a few more bucks.

One other option is see if the store has a whisky tasting. Then you get to try a few.

This is definitely the way to go if you can...everyone's tastes are so different. What it really boils down to is drink what you like...but the only way to do that is try lots of different bottles.
