Please disregard if the post is too nerdy:

The other difference between Oban and some of the Islay peated malts is that Oban sources their peat from the Highlands and most of the Islay malts source their peat from Islay itself. Typically, Islay peat has more of the medicinal/iodine profile and the Highland peat more of the bonfire smoke, earthier.

Port Charlotte, that @Irish recommended (great call btw, Matt!), sources their peat from the Highlands as well, so one can see the difference in profile between the PCs and some of the other Islays.

Diageo, who owns the Port Ellen malting facilities, announced that only their own distilleries will be allowed to use their peated malt. It will be interesting to see what will happen with some of the distilleries who will have to source their peat elsewhere. My guess is it's just a negotiating tactic and nothing will change, but the price.

I just read an internet article on the different types of peat used in scotch production and while I have an extensive background in physics, the organic chemistry lesson complete with diagrams brought back flashbacks to the horror of the chemistry classes I took

I think I need an emotional support beverage  :ROFLMAO:

This is one of those bottles where the first sip or two are always bleh, but as it sits and builds it gets so much better. Spicy for a wheater, interesting mix of vanilla, oak and baking spices.

The scotch drinker in my cash game recommended this as a good, inexpensive daily sipper. He’s not the only person to recommend this bottle either. For $25 and tax, you could do a helluva lot worse! Pretty damn tasty IMO

I need to work through my samples, this one is courtesy of @juankay20

Kings County Barrel Strength - NYCBD Private Pick

Nose: Rich cherries jubilee and stewed red fruits up front, slight musty oak background notes.

Palate: Dark cherry chocolate cordial, toasted barrel char and leather come through as it sits and dries. Bold and proofy, with a crazy oily and viscous mouthfeel

Finish: Full, lengthy finish, spicy charred oak barrel

Great pour, defintely hits hard!

Edit to add - added a drop of water to my last couple of sips and WOW that opened this up even more, crazy flavorful. Sweet but dark up front followed by tons of oak and spice. Fantastic!

Preface, I know nothing about single malts, any of these worth picking up?

Good prices across the board!

I have all the Arbegs and the Edradour. The Arbegs are kinda one offs special realeases and are okay. Not sure they are even better than the 10yo. The Edradour is a great sherry bomb and I think worth it for the price. But, you gotta like sherried scotch, and Edradour is a funky one at that.
