Tipping in a Dedicated Dealt Game (1 Viewer)

I host a $1/$2 PLO, Hold ‘em, Pineapple game
I also deal and play
No rake
I just ask the players to tip what they deem appropriate.
I provide drinks, incl beer and whiskey, pizza, chips, candy. It costs me about $200 to host the game.
I’d say on average I get about $250-$300 in tips for the night. Those tips aren’t put into play, I keep them off the table. We’re all good friends and have been playing together for over 15 years.

I too have invested thousands of dollars in chips, tables, shuffletech, cards etc…I do it because no one in our crew really would put that kind of game together other than me. But they all love playing at my house.
I guess what I’m saying is, your players should be contributing something for you hosting if you’re friends. If you’re inviting strangers, rake the game.

No tipping.

I’m closing the thread.

I make 6 figures and this is my hobby.

You’ve won.
Hey man, don’t blame us. Blame the consortium of your regulars who told you to hang a tip jar over the table - they’re the ones who started this.
Yes. Edit thread.
Pretty sure vendors can close threads on their forums but nobody else can close threads anywhere else.

Blast it! Lol

I do think I knew that.

That’s alright.

I’ll make the instigators at my game read the thread lol

Geez I can honestly say that I've never even considered asking for tips in my games so I certainly have been missing out I guess LOL.
For the record I haven’t asked.

I had regulars insist on it because apparently they love my game.

Well, it’s a labor of love so I’ll just have to endure lol

Aw sorry, I meant to not post that. I’d typed it out and decided not to post it. I forgot it was there when I submitted that last post.
Sorry, I’ve probably been too much of a jerk here.

No worries. I never felt accosted.

We’ve interacted. You’re good.

And then, if they stop showing up for games, you might have a claim for loss of consortium.

Hey don’t listen to me man, I’m in the minority here. I’m in the camp that just feels lucky to have an active game with good friends so I don’t even think about it.

Also, you might not have come out and asked for tips, but aren’t you essentially doing that by having a tip jar out?

If I placed it then yes.

I’m not going to and have NEVER asked for anything.

I have a great setup, water, soda, a fridge and facilities. I don’t provide anything else so I wouldn’t feel right about asking for anything up front or even down back.

It’s my hobby.

I do though, not pay change. You cash out for 29.10 and the .10 goes into the bucket. Nobody has ever had a problem and after players shift chips around at cash out to round up it’s usually about $3 lol

Reviving this not too stale thread ...

I play sometimes in a .05/.10 cash game where one of the players (not the host) always deals (the group seems to like it and won't let anyone else deal). I've seen tips as large as $5/hand go into his "Tip Pool". By the end of the night he usually has >$50 in tips in a game where the standard buy-in is $20. Any winning hand, even a buck or so, everyone tells me to make sure that I tip the dealer (they seem to think that because players are expected to tip in a casino, that they should tip in a home game for a "real" experience).

This bugs the sh!t out of me. I usually respond that I will tip at the end of the night, and to be honest I don't mind rounding down to the nearest $5 when cashing out and leaving the change, although I would feel much better about it if it was going to the host, rather than just one of the players who won't let anyone else deal. But padding the pockets of an otherwise winning player in a micro-stakes game feels dirty and wrong somehow to me.

If there is a dedicated dealer (not playing), they are working and should be compensated. Dealing is an incredibly difficult job, especially for hours on end into the early morning. A good dealer is critical for a good game tempo. Knowing the different games, calculating the pot, shuffling and dealing with player crap is incredibly tough. Dealers deserve every penny they get. Tip them all and tip them well - win or lose.

To reiterate, since the thread is still breathing somehow, there is a bucket that players drop a few chips or bills in at the end of the night (usually totals somewhere between $3-5) but NO TIPPING MECHANISM DURING PLAY.

I just want to clarify; NO TIPPING MECHANISM DURING PLAY.

I’m the dedicated dealer since it’s my game and we have several new players who, let’s say, wouldn’t do a superb job. It makes everyone’s game more enjoyable. I do an excellent job and and am quite social and wildly entertaining.

But in case I wasn’t clear; there is NO TIPPING MECHANISM DURING PLAY.

Thank you (lol)

I can understand tipping is odd in a .05 / .10 what are you going to do? tip 10%, and the pot is what $1? So you're tossing someone 10 cents, 'HEY, don't spend it all in one place!'

I would expect to pass the deal, and I would expect for there to be shitty dealers. There just isnt enough room to tip in that game, I think Ken's game is a little different, and easier to tip the host as you point out.

Through out the thread its hard to tip someone dealing and playing. I think your options are tip, feel like a jerk, or don't play there, sucks to be in that spot.

If you’re the host AND dealer it puts you in a tough spot. I’d honestly just ask for a small time fee from everyone. $5 a person for the day/night if I were to host and play.

Some people hate tipping dealers that are also playing fyi.
This is how I feel. Dealing is exhausting especially to a room full of noobs, but in a 5c/10c game that I also play in and host I dont see a way around it. Just hope they appreciate it and learn how to play over time.
