What are you listening to? (4 Viewers)

I've not been listening to much psych lately but this one came on shuffle on Keri's (wife's) mp3 player. Bit of a stormer from ultra-famous Orange Machine. Which were an Irish band at the tail end of the '60s.

More info on Orange Machine

The story of Dr Crippen makes for some interesting reading - murdered his wife, Cora, and whose disappearance was reported to the police by her friend, a strong woman called Vulcana...

sounds good, Toby. on first listen, i thought you'd found a track george harrison cribbed another melody from as the verse sounds quite like If I Needed Someone. but it looks like this came out in 67ish whereas IINS was recorded in 65. still sounds good, though!

so many of these cool psych gems that ought to be uncovered. is there a Nuggets-like compilation for psych-rock? there should be...

I thought the Nuggets comps from Rhino were mostly psych rock? There's a few box sets. There's Pebbles and Rubble too.

There are some others. Mindrocker?

Nuggets is a little more garage rock-centric and though it purports to include psych, I always thought it was pretty narrow in its view of sub-genres within underground rock beyond garage. There has to be a good compilation out there, but I'll have to look more deeply when I have time.

One of the casualties of streaming music imo is that we tend to think we don't need anyone else's guidance to find the great single tracks, but as Nuggets demonstrates, they often come from artists whose total catalog is not all that impressive, but who had some fantastic one-offs.

Ever since I had this poker room chat with 12thMan, I can't quit listening to Soundgarden and Audioslave. Those are two great bands and I hear than Chris Cornell is open to working with those RATM guys again. Great songs, Cochise, Show Me How To Live, etc.

Soundgarden in a nightclub on the Louder than Love tour is one of my favorite concert memories. $8 to see them right before they blew up. Was luke warm going in, was blown away going home. Never liked their style enough to be a huge fan, but their live performance was AMAZING.

Hard rock and metal are not my thing, I'm more alt rock/punk in my heart, but there is no denying Sound Garden are kings of their domain.

I'm revisiting some bits and pieces on my wife's music player, Inc Broken Bells' self-titled album.

Although I prefer Christina Hendricks, I like the album version of the track better than that in the above:

had to work a bit late tonight and blared this fucking insane show by medeski martin and wood with nels cline, my favorite living guitarist.

they destroy.

Love MMW, by the sounds of it I need to listen to this all the way through. Nice one jb

Some songs I heard over the weekend from "The Weather" on the Welcome to Night Vale podcast. Some great music I would have never heard if not for starting this most excellent podcast...

I have been pumping this album all day today many times over because its just pure fucking hard rock and having Mike portnoy on drums cant hurt. If you want some just pure rock then give the Winery Dogs a go at. The singer sounds a lot like Chris Cornell but I mostly listen for the soothing Portnoy fills and off time beats.
The drums half way through are awesome and at the very end.

On my way to casino for weekly tourney/ 1/2 NLH and with the library on shuffle we started our day with this gem!
Hopefully the run good continues!

Getting my redneck on again. My favourite poker-related-named band of the week, The Lowest Pair

Saw these guys at the Rock and Roll Hotel in DC about 7 years ago, easily top 5 live performances I've ever witnessed.

Below is cross-posted from Derail/WTF thread, but this thread could certainly use more Residents with all the Ween and TMBG mentions.

prolly posted this already, but hey; it belongs here.

Not to make this some boring discursion into performance art (although that's obviously what I'm doing), but my problem with that particular type stuff from Dan and others is that it pulls over itself this insincere "slacker" facade. He could easily do everything he's doing there without the morass of wires and "vintage" keyboard and effects boxes. But he wants to appear as if he's a broke artist just doing what he can with what little he's been able to gather when in reality the whole thing is curated and orchestrated within an inch of its life in order to appear random.

In the world of the hipster, the worst thing he can do is try too hard or actually put effort into his art. He has to appear that he's merely giving the audience a glimpse into his weird reality.

However, check out the below clips of the Residents to see the progenitors of the type of experimental art-pop Dan tries so hard to capture. They are still playing and are still among the best music performance artists on the planet. And notice that they make no bones about how hard they have worked to present their art. They're not afraid to show that they have practiced for countless hours and spent countless dollars in order to give life to their work.

Does it sounds weird and not to everyone's taste? Absolutely. But it's not a joke because you can see the sincerity with which they're willing to put real work in to get to where they are.

This week I've been listening to the latest Calexico album, which in addition to the usual Mexicana hot cheese throws in dub, ska and Balkan influences.

But seeing how they're light years better, here's some Love instead:

Yes, Edge of the Sun. I've been enjoying it. It's a nice mix of musical styles and influences. I've had it on loop on my mp3 player for several rotations.

Not sure when it was released but I only going out it was out recently!
