Board Gamers, show us your loot! (7 Viewers)

God I love this thread, I'm thinking of getting into board games more, and this isnt helping  :ROFLMAO:

I scored some sweet new games at the thrift store this week. Disney Apples to Apples and Hedbanz. Some really intense games, woo!  I also bought a bag with a few card games because it had Fluxx in it. I've never played, but it seems to be a love it or hate it game because it's very luck based. I think my son will like it.

I also got a few cheap games on sale on Amazon, and I picked the delayed shipping and get a digital credit so they wouldn't arrive immediately. My wife was already complaining about my thrift store purchases. But they shipped a week sooner than estimated and got delivered today, dang it!

She suggested we should add a rule that we have to purge a game for each new game I bring home. I replied with:

As others have said, I use poker chips for nearly every game that uses money. I also use them for any game that tracks score on a pad and paper, which is not just an improvement, it's a massive improvement.

Sometimes, it's a game that doesn't even keep score or money.

So I'm thinking of making some "board game" custom chips, on the cards mold (china ceramics).
What should the denominations reasonably go up to? As in, which games are there that might need, say, a 5000 chip? Or a 25,000 chip?

what games do you play? i personally can't think of any game that would need anything beyond a $1k chip - and even that is probably not actually necessary - but there are so many games out there, who knows?

Power Grid justifies every denomination from 1 to 50
Food Chain Magnate every denomination from 1 to 100
18xx you need everything from 1 to 500, maybe 1000
Acquire uses 100-500-1000-5000
I forget what Imperial uses, but you definitely need chips in that game as well as all of the above

My problem is that I'm not "up" on most of the popular games from the last five years. Lots of Kickstarters, hell, it's the age of the Kickstarter board game, and I've been burned by too many pretty Kickstarter games that were mediocre, so I am strictly try before you buy there.

Outside of Acquire, the only other use for 5000s I can think of is some of the very large 18xx.

I know, it's Monopoly... but I had to pick these up after my trip to Scotland in 2019 and because both these cities are referenced in Gloryhammer songs. It took months of searching to find these and get them out of Scotland, and I finally ended up getting both of them just weeks apart. I'm still looking for Inverness Monopoly, but it's been out of print for over 20 years, so that one might take a while.

Barnes and Noble has some good clearance sales on games right now, so I went to the one near me the other day, but I struck out. They did have the Game of Thrones game which is supposed to be good at 50% off, but I've never watched that show. Some people are finding LOTR Journeys in Middle Earth at 50% off or even cheaper, but not at my store.

All my new pickups since late October. A lot given that I bought nothing since November of 2019. I really want to buy some cube rails games like Ride The Rails, Iberian Gauge, etc. But I don't feel like I'll have 3 or more players often enough to justify it.

I've recently started playing Terraforming Mars through Steam. An excellent board game, for a much lower cost, no set-up time, and an ability to play in a COVID world or with friends that simply can't make game nights because of distance.

I play it in my iPad a lot. I just Kickstarted the card game version because I don't own TM. I like it, but it's too long IRL for what it is. And I always felt the board stuff was fine, but not really necessary.

anyone here play/enjoy castles of tuscany? i love castles of burgundy more, but tuscany is so much more accessible and it's right up my wife's alley so it actually gets played. and it's nice to not have to look up what every building does every time.

I’ve been debating picking it up. Only played castles of burgundy once but liked it.

I need to look closer at the colours for Tuscany though

We were recently stuck in a Hertz line for 3 f**k**g hours. Mrs Zombie would have killed someone, if I didn't have a 3 hour game at my fingertips. No game is too long, just the time available to play can be too short.

I'm so out of the loop I don't even know what that is. Castles of Burgundy is a fantastic game though.

I didn't say it was too long in general. It's too long IMO for what it is. One of my favorite games is Trickerion, which is 3-4 hours. My games of TM on the iPad have never come even close to approaching 3 hours.

I picked up Qwixx recently and my son and I tried it out the other night at the cabin we stayed at. He kicked my butt and liked the game a lot. It's a great alternative to Yahtzee which my parents love to play over and over... We will have to teach it to them when they come visit in about a month.

We also got in a fun family game of Hedbanz (one of the few things my daughter will play), and 3 of us played Adorable Pandaring again, which is a fun little card game. Quick, easy to teach, good art and theme, and a bit of strategy. We play it a lot while camping because it travels well and doesn't need a big table. I only bought it because it was on sale and my wife loves pandas, but I was pleasantly surprised by the game.

Qwixx has long been one of my favorite roll n write games. While there are others I like more now, like Clever or Welcome To, I'll still play Qwixx anytime someone wants to.

So this arrived on Monday. Shipped from Indiana, arrived in Atlanta, then took a random trip to a distribution center in Puerto Rico, emailed USPS to complain, then finally came back.

Lot of game in a small box. Nothing revolutionary, but a solid game with a small footprint, and only $30.

Have now played 4 games of Ginkgopolis. Quickly has become a favorite for me and my wife. Given her reaction, it might become her favorite game. And it's likely to make my top 10. A really fascinating game. Theme is basically irrelevant.

Preordered Jack Company (and Pax Pamir) on kickstarter today. Couldn't say no. I kickstart maybe 1 or 2 games a year.

The one I'm really looking forward to is my Beyond Humanity: Colonies kickstarter, which should deliver soon.
