I've been thinking about this a lot lately.

If the vast majority of your poker chips just went away, never to be seen again, how would you start to rebuild?

Just a blank slate/fresh start, do you go back to what you were trying to do when it happened or go in an entirely different direction? Is there anybody out there who would just throw in the towel and give up the hobby?

There's varying levels of sets and collections here from people with various budgets and levels of addiction, so I'm just curious to see what the mindset of most people would be given their current situations and collections.

Edit - This is assuming starting today, meaning you can't go back in time and buy things you missed. Only moving forward.

I would of bought the BCC sets I hymned and hummed about and now regret not buying them. I would not give up on the hobby. Half the fun for me is trying to find them. The hunt is the thrill.

This morning I was looking at a sample set of the Capital Room chips, BCC customs on the large greek key mold (MD88). Super bright colors and cool edge spot patterns.. overall just amazing chips. I think the era of BCC custom chips must have been quite special...

Indeed. Special when they got it right. Absolute train wreck when they f*cked up.
Word. I guess you really don't know what you got til it's gone, but BCC really upset alot of people toward the end. I told myself there is no way in hell I'm going to send these guys $1,000 after I saw some of the messes they made. I remember one poor chap on CT who refused to unbox his chips he was so upset.
So this is kind of a derail but I had the chance, I decided not to take it.

Like @ovo said, get what is available at reasonable prices right now. I would buy some Horseshoes, Cleveland or Cincinnati. Probably jump on a group buy for some Sun-fly hybrids and go from there.

From this point forward...

I would replace all my customs. Assuming my chips just "went away" I would have to assume it was something that would be covered by insurance, so CPCs, China clays, RT Plastics relabels (assuming I could find more), plaques, even the ceramics, though this time I would have denoms printed on them.

I would not replace the metal-slugged ABS plastic customs. Just a sample set to show and prevent others from buying "casino weight" chips.

I do have some difficult to replace Paulsons that I would sorely miss, but I would not want to pay today's prices. I also have a box-full of samples and their absence would make me sad, but in time they would be replaced. All my chips in a display box would need to be replaced as well, as they are mementos of the few times I finished a poker game with more money than I started with.

Key Wests . . . or some other custom supplier. My signature initials as a hot stamp on both sides, no denominations. Traditional colours, no edge spots. Deep colours, though . . . like a forest green for the 25s and a crimson red for the 5s.

No denominations so I can alternate between cash and tourney usage with the same set.

WHITE - $1.00 chip T5000
RED - $5.00 chip T1000
GREEN - $20.00 chip T25
BLACK - $100.00 chip T100
YELLOW - $0.25 chip T500

I could not advocate for using the same set for cash and tournaments, but I get the cost savings of just having a single set. However, I would be confused by the breakdown that you would use with a workhorse $1 (thus needing many) and a tournament ending T5000 (thus needing few).

I was lucky enough to avoid an actual wreck on the BCC RR. The train never derailed but did run out of fuel twice then got lost......
It only took about 14 months to get custom hot stamps

Since time travel is not allowed, I would probably start over with custom CPC and maybe consider playable casino sets

Assuming I could take the same cash I've spent over the years I would go full CPC custom. I would design one cash set and one tournament set. I'd probably still collect sample sets to satisfy by collector urge.

For the most part I would just replace what I have. The one set I'd change is my HP tournament set. The 2V12s I currently have are fine but if I was remaking it I would go with something like this instead...

I'm starting a local petition today.

I'd probably go for a similar approach (dual-purpose but dual-denominations), either CPC customs or inlay-replacement Paulson or TRK chips (depending on availability):

green 25 (25c or T25)
blue 100 ($1 or T100)
red 500 ($5 or T500)
yellow 2000 ($20 or T2000)
white or gray NCV (5c, $100, or T10K as needed)

I've actually had this set (and another with similar attributes) already in the planning stages for quite some time. :)

You prefer the new mockup?
I do. Love the original chips too, but that spread of 1/8" spot patterns is FTW to me. (y)

Can never have too many tournament sets. Just ask my chip closet.

If starting from scratch today, I'd probably post a quick WTB for two cheaper sets (one tourney one cash) like nexgens or maybe an older ceramic (crystal oyster, american beauties, hooters, etc), something just to get me ba5cj up and running games. Would then start saving for a custom CPC tourney set and start assembling pieces of a mixed paulson cash set. Would also jump on the GOT or Boardwalk group buy. At the prices a lot of sets in excellent condition are going for today (PNY/PCA/aztar/Terribles/Horseshoes) I dont think I'd be rebuilding one of those.

I like that the replacement set would also use T1000s. Perhaps more than you need (since all denoms were T1000), but at least they're T1000s ;)

The thought of replacing a 3000 chip tournament set...
Replacing? Who said anything about replacing?
Why am I tempted to start offering odds of these being finished in time for S@PV? :D:D:D
....which will then be capable of accommodating a full 12 tournament tables. (y):ROFL: :ROFLMAO:

Empty the pool, room for two tables down there. Four more around the perimeter. Done deal.
