If You Had to Start Over... (3 Viewers)

1. I would have ordered custom labeled TH&C chips when DrBalanced and I first looked st Paulsons in the 90s. I thought they were too expensive at the time. Lol.
2. I would have done a custom BCC set and risked it. I thought it was too expensive to risk it at the time. Lol.
At least I learned and broke the pattern when ASM/CPC became the only choice and was threatened several times.

Truly envious of all of you who had a chance to buy many large sets of Paulson chips. Despite being new to the game (just a few months of serious chipping) I am determined to finish my Casino de Isthmus set (75% done), PNY (50% done), Le Paulson Noir (0% done), an PCA secondary set (also 0% done)

I admire the determination to finish sets that haven;t even been started.

I'm also very new to the hobby, so starting over wouldn't be very different from where I am right now. The luxury of starting over would be that I'd already know that I don't like certain things, so I wouldn't have to waste time and money learning those lessons again.
But I like unavailable things, so I've been stuck buying Paulsons one at a time. It's expensive and it takes a lot of patience. If I had to start over, I might switch it up and start buying TRK's one at a time.

If I had a do-over vs a start over (which you ruled out) then I would have:
- Sarted sooner and got in on the ground floor with some of the chips that are so difficult to acquire now and cost so much more when I do find them.
- Bought those BCC home chips in addition to the Paulsons. The Pausons weren't a terrible call, but I should have bought my second choice, as well, which was a particular set of BCCs.

As for starting over without being able to turn back time, I might try to figure out what the most difficult denoms to obtain are for a target set and then wait until I find those chips before grabbing the low hanging fruit. Or, maybe even wait until a collection comes available before jumping in. But this thinking is likely just due to my current frustration with having so many partial sets in the works and so few completed. Cant' get the $1s for these... or the $25s for those...or the fracs for these other ones...etc. That could just be me not being patient enough. Or, maybe I'm doomed. Time will tell.

  • Work on poker game
  • Win chipping money
  • Buy way more chips than you need
  • Figure out optimal breakdowns with sets
  • Buy tables from Chanman
  • Keep the following 10 sets
    • 2 TRK cash sets
    • 1 CPC tourney set
    • 2 CPC cash sets
    • 1 BCC tourney set
    • 1 Paulson THC mixed cash set
    • 1 Paulson no mold tourney set
    • 1 Paulson RHC pink chip limit set
    • 1 Bud Jones CIC cash set
  • Sell off everything else
  • (y)

I would go with customs from CPC only. Unless i could go back and keep all the Paulsons i bought back in 2000 from Spinnettis. Probably had 10,000 at one time. I think i paid $.30 a piece for them. If i had known then what kind of tourney set i would be using now all would be right in the world...

Did you just go ahead and describe your 10 favorite sets?

I would tweek the denominations on my Monopoly set. When I bought it we played .10/.25 blinds with a $10 buy in.

Now it's $1/2 with $100-200 buy in. So I have no use for the .10 or even the .25 really.

So I would add a $25 and $100 in place. Only 4 trains so only 4 denominations.

Probably would have bought a much larger Empress set... Or like a lot of people seem to think, save the money, don't buy a few thousand Paulson, and just get custome sets... They are so attractive...

Replacing? Who said anything about replacing?

....which will then be capable of accommodating a full 12 tournament tables. (y):ROFL: :ROFLMAO:

Empty the pool, room for two tables down there. Four more around the perimeter. Done deal.
Definitely agree on making sure you have enough for a large buy-in, right now my goal is too make sure I have enough for 70+ buy-in...

You could use the trains from the $0.10 and $0.25 again for the $25 and $100 since they won't be on the table at the same time.

It would be like having 2 sets that the $1's & 5's overlap in.

I would wait for new mint Paulsons from Jim and up my chip amount back to 10K plus get back bright GCR Paulsons.

Yep, thought about that. Just no $$ for it right now...

If are sure you won't be using the dimes pop the inlays out then and have @Gear make you some new $25 labels made up. For $0.30 a chip you have a much more usable chip without spending several hundred dollars.

I would probably wait doing it to the $0.25 though unless you are sure you won't use them again.

Now that's a good idea... I'll consider it...

@AfterTheFact, Gear's textured labels are incredible! If you would like to test some, PM me your address and I'll send you some spares I have so you can check them out.

If I had to start over, I'd first drop a few hundred on:

(1) a half barrel of inlaid samples on each of CPC's active molds

and

(2) a plane ticket to visit Spinetti's.

Agreed and thank you! I forgot about the oversize inlays on these which probably would not be good for a relabel.

Check with Gear. Since you would be taking the old inlay out he can size the new label to fit the size of the recess.

Yeah, except the oversize label is larger than the 'recess' diameter (some chips don't have a recess, only the pressed space caused by pressing the inlay into the chip).

I've never tried to remove an oversize inlay on an ASM/CPC chip, but I can't imagine that it would be as easy,as removing a standard size, nor look as good once removed.
.

I would get rid of the time I spent on eBay trying to get 100's for my WTHC set. I bought about $1000 in paulsons that no one wanted. I was like. PAULSON's YES!!. well. Some have turned out OK. lots, nobody wants.

Love minty TRKs, and they are usually major heavyweight contenders. The Pick Hobson Riverside $5s have great colors..... that's a great start for an epic set.

So what are your plans for those three Paulson Presidents barrels? I have a bunch of 'em that need a new loving home. :)

So, after a few months of buying, selling (obviously a lot of the former  ), and let's not forget trading, I now have several incomplete sets. But as you all say, it's about the journey, right?

You are very right. The $5s are truly epic. The colors are surreal. I will need three racks of $100s to make this a playable set for me, but even when I complete the set, I doubt I will ever put them in play. There is something unique about these chips wherein you almost don't ever want to take them out of that state of super crisp chalkiness. Time will tell.

I don't know what my plans for them are, but I bought them from Apache a few months ago and asked if he has any more and he said they were his last. So, yes, I'd like to complete the set ;)... how many different Presidents did Paulson make?

I also need to complete the PNY, the PCA and Le Noir set ... (I need to have two racks of $5s, two racks of $25s and 3 racks of $100s in my sets)...in due time :D
