Is saying "nice hand", etc, in an all in situation when behind unsportsmanlike? (2 Viewers)

Is it a needle to say "nice hand", et al. before the whole runout is dealt in an all in situation?

Personally this is my first reaction when it's all in and I'm behind. I'll usually say something like "Oh Shit" or "damn, nice hand". Was JJ vs QQ shove with a friend last week.

Never an intentional needle but with strangers I wouldn't think I was insulting the guy unless it was said after the bink.

I know it’s not the same thing at all… but this reminds me of when Tony G says he hasn’t looked at his cards and is all in and Hellmuth believed him and called, and then Hellmuth gets pissed when he finds out that Tony actually did look at his cards and lied about it. I can’t fathom that.

As someone mentioned before, poker is a mental game and gaining an advantage by lying or putting other players on tilt is fair game and some people’s strategy. It’s certainly Tony G’s.

In this situation, and based on how you’ve described him, it sounds like this player may use remarks like this to tilt people over the course of the night (even when the it may not make a difference to the rest of the current hand).

You just have to decide how far you’re willing to let people take it if you’re the host and it’s your game, or how you’re going to react to it if you’re not. Every home game is different in terms of “what goes”. I think the overall advice here which I concur with, is address it if you feel it’s necessary but also learn to let it roll off your back (definitely a skill you have to work on for some of us, myself included).

I think it’s bad etiquette. It’s something you say after the hand is over
