I know it’s not the same thing at all… but this reminds me of
when Tony G says he hasn’t looked at his cards and is all in and Hellmuth believed him and called, and then Hellmuth gets pissed when he finds out that Tony actually
did look at his cards and lied about it. I can’t fathom that.
As someone mentioned before, poker is a mental game and gaining an advantage by lying or putting other players on tilt is fair game and some people’s strategy. It’s certainly Tony G’s.
In this situation, and based on how you’ve described him, it sounds like this player may use remarks like this to tilt people over the course of the night (even when the it may not make a difference to the rest of the current hand).
You just have to decide how far you’re willing to let people take it if you’re the host and it’s your game, or how you’re going to react to it if you’re not. Every home game is different in terms of “what goes”. I think the overall advice here which I concur with, is address it if you feel it’s necessary but also learn to let it roll off your back (definitely a skill you have to work on for some of us, myself included).
